During the opening the player is required to take a photograph of themselves. Fat Byakuya takes on the appearance of the player, and is the first execution. A looped voice clip of Kodaka pleading the player to never purchase a Danganronpa game again replaces any music and continues throughout the entire second chapter, and the game plays out as normal from there except Nagito disappears in chapter three with no explanation.
Perhaps the golden rock was inside us all along.

Considering that (huuuuuuuuge ending spoilers for the original game) this setting takes place in a virtual simulation and the students really didn't die...it probably will be easy to link the other route as a post-game story, like the students went back into the virtual world and got trapped all over again.

Kinda wish they were doing this with 3 instead, but 2's cast is weirdly popular. (No idea why. It's the most boring line-up.)

2 was a PSP game while V3 was a Vita game. 2's graphics (and especially gameplay) are more in need of a touch-up.

Also 2's cast is generally great except that somehow almost all the survivors are the most boring characters

DR2's character are decent in a vacuum, but the game's attempts at humor are so frequent and unfunny that it makes it hard to like anyone when they're used as props for terrible jokes.

even if i kinda feel like if you wanted to tell a new scenario he probably gets got early. that feels like it'd cause the greatest divergence.

I would be surprised if Nagito lives past Chapter 1

Like, from a writer's perspective, anything you could do with him would either be a retread or just keeping him around simply because he's popular. Neither options make for a better story

It'd be interesting if they killed off Hajime early. Most of the others are more interesting. Would be fun to have someone like Ibuki or Sonia as the replacement MC.

Normally I'd say not to get my hopes up, but given the obvious titling pun and the series' history, won't be surprised at all if it ends up being "one case that feels like a DR2 AU is starting, and then the ending of the case tailspins into something completely fucking ridiculous."

Imagine just dumping right out of the simulation at the end of Chapter 1 and moving straight to Remnants of Despair.....though I don't know if I actually want to see them start getting killed off IRL in any way, so not to sure how it would go.

Although I want Nagito to die in case 1, I think we're in for six cases of him, he's way too popular, and without him, there's no chaos character. I'm curious if Hajime will survive this time, killing him seems the most audacious move possible. Also Chiaki. Also I'm curious what'll be done with the Ultimate Imposter, he is by far the character with the least clear motives.

I really hope there's lots of Imposter. After hating Byakuya in DR1, I absolutely loved him in this, so I was sad he was first to die.

I could see some characters having their personalities completely changed. We could have one of the others take Nagito's place, they'd just have to become their evil versions.

On the topic of Hiyoko:

Considering she got along really well with Mahiru and a protagonist switch wouldn't be out of the question I wouldn't be surprised if Hiyoko isn't nearly as much of an unlikable shit - especially if Mikan eats it early so she loses her main target.

I keep looking at that very brief bit of trial gameplay focusing on Mahiru they showed and going "well obviously that's just there because that's the same moment that was in the original trailer"....and then getting this nagging feeling in the back of my head that that's just throwing off the scent.

And to be clear I'm not pulling this ENTIRELY out of my ass! I've always felt this way about Mahiru. In a sea of weirdos across 4 games she's the most normal by FAR outside of the actual normie (at least up front) protagonists. There is no quirk there. Even Sayaka was less normal.

I also would love Mahiru as a protagonist or at least making it far into the game. She's my second favorite after Sonia.

As for Hiyoko, she does express fondness for Mahiru, so she's not totally unredeemable IMHO.

If Hajime gets ganked first I'm pretty sure at that point they'll just kill the rest of the original survivors early too. Could easily see Akane, Fuyuhiko, and Sonia dead in the first two chapters, and if so I doubt Kazuichi makes it very far.

Big DR2 spoilers - I decided to rank each character by how interesting I think they would be living a long time in a total plot redo:

1. Twogami/Imposter - Obviously. I can't imagine ranking anyone else #1. The idea behind this guy is fascinating but we don't learn shit about him. If 2x2 doesn't feature this guy heavily I'm going to question why the hell they're even doing this.

2. Mahiru - Out of the people who die early in DR2, she's the most likeable and would be the nicest to have around, imo. If we're going to do a protagonist swap, she's the only one who really fits. I feel like sentiment towards her has warmed over time.

3. Peko - Quietly had loads of potential. She died so Fuyuhiko could get a character arc - but it could have easily been the other way around, and I EXPECT it to be the other way around. Besides the Imposter, this feels like one of the more obvious character arcs to turn on its head by having a different character live.

4. Hiyoko - I'll die on this hill! She got done dirty. She was on the verge of having a character arc and got ganked before it could happen. You only like Fuyuhiko because he got redeemed and had a character arc! Give her a chance!

5. Chiaki - Just the simple fact of her being alive at all is going to imbue this game with a lot of tension, because you already know what her story is, and the game knows that you know, so you know they're going to have to switch it up with her but you won't know how. Besides, she's the most popular character in the game and arguably the most popular in the series, so it makes sense to have her stick around.

6. Nagito - Probably going to figure into the new plot quite a bit, if I had to guess, since he's sort of like Chiaki where the game's dynamics just wouldn't be the same without him. But I also expect him to be a wildcard. Maybe he won't be openly crazy this time. I don't know! Obviously they're going to do SOMETHING with Nagito, that's just a given, but it's also really hard for him to top what he already did in DR2.

7. Hajime/Izuru - Complete and total wildcard. This ranking only applies if they do a protagonist swap, which I realize is the "predictable" thing to do but it would just be boring to do Hajime again and have the same plot beats. But if Hajime became Izuru early or something, or slipped into more of a Nagito role somehow? I mean, they kinda have to shake it up here SOMEHOW.

8. Teruteru - I'll stand up and defend Teruteru a little bit. Is he a weird, horny pervert who kinda sucks? Yeah! Is he kind of unexpectedly funny in the first trial? I think so! Could that give him further potential? Maybe! I don't know, I'm probably alone on this, but I think the idea of Teruteru surviving for a long time is really funny and kind of surreal. If you want to sell that we're really going down the rabbit hole, having Teruteru live past chapter 1 would be great.

9. Mikan - She could have an actual character arc that doesn't involve her randomly getting made an insane murderer! I think that would be kind of nice. I don't think she'd be as interesting as Hiyoko but at least she does have a useful talent so that could come in handy.

10. Ibuki - Just looking at it objectively, having Ibuki live to the end makes a lot of sense. She's a popular character and her death was meaningless, she could easily be swapped as an expendable character into the surviving cast. I think she's really one note though, so I don't know what they'd do with her.

11. Gundham - This is basically the line for me where I think characters do or don't have much future potential. Gundham is undeniably funny and I don't think anyone wants him to go out too early, but we also did get plenty of Gundham in the original DR2 so it's not like there was anything left on the table.

12. Sonia - I like Sonia, but what do you do with her? If you're going to have one of the original survivors survive, again, she would be a decent option just because she's funny without being annoying and serves decently well as a bystander to emotional plot beats, but I don't feel like there's a ton of missed potential for her, either.

13. Nekomaru - Uhhh... I don't know what they could do with this guy. I guess have him be an actual team manager? Have him step into a team-glue kind of role? I don't know, I struggle to think of a way to make Nekomaru that interesting, and clearly so did they because they had to make a bizarre subplot about him being a robot just for the sake of a weird murder. Boy, they did some really weird shit in DR2.

14. Kazuichi - I'm only ranking him this high because despite emotionally being the most useless character, he DOES have the most useful talent, so there's value in him sticking around just for the sake of that. He also feels like a guy who could easily just get merked in chapter 1 or 2 and we don't think about him again.

15. Akane - I don't know what the point of her subplot was in DR2, and I don't see the point in trying to repeat it. Fully expendable. I'd really need an Akane stan to try to sell me on this, but I don't think I've ever met an Akane stan.

16. Fuyuhiko - Bye Fuyuhiko! You were great in DR2, and that's exactly why this guy's perfect case 1 victim or killer fodder in the new game. I don't think there's any chance that we just get a repeat of this guy's character arc since it was already the most thoroughly investigated subplot and character arc of the original game. He's gonna die and Peko's gonna get the character arc this time, mark my words.
