I was waiting until I'd done almost everything else before I started on that.
Any tips in terms of team composition? Should it literally just be 3 mega Pokemon with good move coverage or do you not often get a chance to do a second mega evolution so other items are useful too?
Sound I bother resetting the EVs on alpha Pokemon so I'm not stuck with the full HP EVs?
Yes to Megas. You should have multiple Megas just so you can adjust to what you're facing. The moves you want to focus on are things that can hit multiple Pokemon at once, quick moves for fast KO sniping, and/or moves that can follow the opponent and thus are not easily dodgeable.
Other things like Flip Turn/U-Turn/Volt Switch are great for making a hit and then protecting your Pokemon from counter attacks. Toxic is also a good one because you'll get credit for it if the status lands the KO. Hazard moves like Spikes/Stealth Rock/Whirlpool/Fire Spin also have good utility if you can throw them up where multiple opponents are congregated.
Try to avoid moves that have slow animations, since you'll either be a sitting duck or they give other players time to steal your KOs. Bigger Alphas are fun to look at, but they have bigger hitboxes and can also miss smaller opponents that are close up because their attacks just fly right over them, so not the best for competitive viability.
