John Carter - 8.9 to 9.9/10

Point discrepancy lies only for my enjoyment of the movie because I was in a theater all by myself allowing myself to truly have fun with it and not stay quiet or hold back with other people around.

+ Hilarious. I bust out laughing at least five times during the movie. And when I mean bust out, I'm talking full-on five-second-plus guffaws almost to the point of tears. There were snickers and cackles and giggles and chuckles throughout, but this is the first new movie in a long time where the humor hit me hard. Of course, part of that may be due to my own private theater.
+ Surprising guest stars. Is Bryan Cranston in EVERY MOVIE? It seems like he is. And I was not expecting Jimmy McNulty!
+ Tim Riggins.
+ The aliens. So awesome looking.
+ That dog
+ The fight scenes
+ Did I mention the humor? Because I just remembered three more things that were ****ing awesome.
+ Complex plot that you can easily get lost in
+ Hilarious ending! Forgot about that too!

- Though complex in plot, some motivations and line deliveries toward those motivations are dull (lol cave of gold) and the romance plot while great in chemistry between the two leads just follows the obvious rom-com plot points. Not much of a minus though since every romantic plot/subplot does that.
- Over-the-top villains with motivations I didn't understand (bad guys just to be bad guys)
- 3D. It costs too much to go see if you don't know what it's about. And between the title and horrible, horrible marketing, why would you?

John Carter is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies. It may not have power over the animated classics (both Renaissance and Pixar), but live-action it beats out The Muppets and maybe even Remember the Titans. (Okay, it does beat out Remember the Titans, but I don't want to admit it!)

B8 Draws topic gone, huh?

If I didn't write the birthday recipient's name on it, I'dve uplodaded the last three hours of work. Got a friend a gift card and a frisbee for birthday presents. When wrapping the frisbee, I cut way too much paper so I had this wide strip that could encase the card. On it, I wrote a standard birthday message in nice angled block letters (think nineties X-Men) but I had so much room left that I just randomly started pencilling in DBZ stuff (my first idea for a present was Season 2 of DBZ... which I'm glad I didn't find because another partygoer got the same, lol). I made a nice timeline:



*DRAGONBALL Z SPOILERS*



1. Goku charging up a Kamehameha in the foreground with Vegeta up high readying the Galick Gun. Teal Sharpie and Magenta Sharpie pop on a mostly colorless drawing

2. Krillin stands proudly over the defeated Guldo, fingers in a peace sign and a big giant grin on his face... while Recoome's beating down and choking out Gohan and Vegeta, respectively, in the background

3. Frieza hovering proudly as Krillin explodes above... and Goku goes Super Saiyan... and I forgot to add lightning, oh well.

4. SSJ Goku blocking SSJ Trunks' sword with his fingah. Least favorite and developed of the drawings.

5. The three faces of Cell with three fighters' faces above each. Piccolo screaming above Imperfect Cell, Tien with a Tri-Beam screaming above Semi-Perfect Cell, and Hercule shouting above Perfect Cell. I really just wanted those three on the picture somewhere. Sadly, no Android #16 or Gohan rage.

6. Great Saiyaman flying through the air like Superman!

7. Majin Buu pointing at himself cluelessly.

8. SSJ3 Goku and SSJ3 Gotenks trying to get their hair untangled!

9. A tiny tiny silhouette of Goku, a giant giant blue sphere of spirit below, and tiny tiny disintegrating silhouette of Kid Buu against it

10. The gift card with a caption beneath saying, "NO YAMCHAS WERE HARMED IN THE DRAWING OF THIS PICTURE"

BONUS. When the gift card is removed, Ghost Nappa is exclaiming "CAAAAAAAAKE!" from behind!

I have never seen a show that made me care deeply about more characters. David Simon is a very good story teller, but he is the best in the world in developing three-dimensional characters that you may love, hate, or be indifferent to; but no matter what, you care about what happens to them.
