Your moral perspective would be fine if we knew everyone's intentions all the time, and knew who was good and who was evil 100% of the time, but that's not how reality is.
There is no way to know which benders are good and which are bad, so to be safe, get rid of them all You don't have to have 100% clarity on who is or is not a bad person to realize that what essentially amounts to racism is probably not what we should base our actions on. That's insane. It's pretty much the exact same principle on which the justice system is founded. You don't punish everyone because it's the exact opposite of just, and you especially don't target whole groups because it's a combination or injustice and prejudice. Some may slip through the cracks. Tough. Being a non totalitarian ass runs that risk. Hell, you even said it: Some people who are good can do things that are evil, either on purpose or accidentally, and those good people can turn evil at any time. I would say ALL people can go evil, in both bender world and real life, but we don't preemptively punish them all because that's ****ing crazy. And yes, it's Amon's perspective. I get that. So ****ing what? That entire perspective is wrong and he's wrong for holding and especially acting on it. I never said the equalists never had an argument ever on any point of their apparent platform, which really seems to be what we're arguing about. I've never come remotely close to saying that. Things probably should be more equal (though we honestly can only take the state of things on Amon's word, and it legitimately might not be nearly the power imbalance he is claiming). Some benders certainly don't deserve their power, and not only am I okay with taking bending away from those, I'd be fully on Amon's side if he was just a vigilante. Batman is awesome. This is not cause to (literally) attack them all, and there is no circumstance under which it would be okay. -- I ****ing love to cuddle. I'm being oppressed! |

You keep saying "oh well because SOME benders are bad that means ALL benders are bad?" That's the gray area.
They clearly do have the point. Are they extreme? Yeah, probably. That's pretty much exactly what moral tension is. If you can't see that you have no idea what you are doing. That's not a ****ing gray area. A reasonable and non-disgusting person knows that the answer is easy. Moral tension is when Aang was deciding whether or not to kill Ozai. Moral tension was Aang attempting to simply imprison Yakone instead of removing his bending immediately after realizing he was a blood bender who regularly abused his power, and he couldn't really be blamed too harshly for either. It would be moral tension if Amon was hunting down criminals and started going after silly bending criminals like jaywalkers and using it in a fight that someone else started. It is not moral tension to victimize an entire group of people based on the actions of very few. It's not even ****ing close. I am honestly amazed you can't see this. -- I ****ing love to cuddle. The point of the Avatar is to keep such people in check. But Korra failed against Tarrlok and Aang let the Firelords have free reign for a hundred years.
She lost one fight. Since when does losing one fight and surviving it equal "You fail forever and are a failure as an Avatar and a person"? Seems perfectly legitimate to desire this cycle of power mongering benders be stopped. Whether you think he's doing it the right way is one thing, but there's no doubt about the legitimacy of the idea that bending is too powerful. By being a power mongering non-bender? Oh. Okay. Further, Amon and the equalists existing (and continuing to exist) are themselves proof that relatively common people can and will be able to stop such powerful people. He planned to remove EVERYONE'S bending, and Tahno was a great publicity stunt to get his message across because he embodies what is wrong with bending. So he's after every bender ever, including but not limited to the overpowered tyrants, and you're reaction is "well he has a point they all have potential to be bad"? If you can't understand the obviously despotic concept behind that thought, I honestly don't know what to say. You say he attacked a stadium full of innocent people like he blew it up or something, the only people that got hurt were the police officers that got knocked out, and Tahno's team that got their bending removed..... I mean, seriously. When Amon was capturing known gangsters and removing their bending powers, I was like "okay it's kind of an intense reaction but it works."

Tarrlok was getting out of hand with his policies, but how did Korra intend to stop him?
By going to his place and beating him up with her bending because she disagreed with his policies. It just ended up turning out that Tarrlok was stronger. Oh yeah that's real different. You are literally making this up in your ass. While Korra is certainly less spiritually aware than Aang was and it did take him a while to see the trick for Ozai, she's clearly capable of getting in touch with her prior avatars and would obviously be exposed to the idea eventually. Maybe she'd kill him. Either way, the bad benders get taken care of and it's asinine of you to assume that it wouldn't be. Maybe Korra is a good guy and will treat them well, maybe not. Either way, Amon sees this as bad and it's very legitimate. Only if he sees everything with a very infantile black and white mind which is exactly what you're arguing against me for supposedly doing. Should normal people perhaps get more representation in leadership? Sure. Should a man form a terrorist organization that, if accomplishing its goals, would clearly change the entire way of life and probably reduce the entire society back to the ****ing stone age and literally entails forcibly removing (largely benign) abilities from (largely benign) people because "oh noes we can't do that"? Philosophy is probably the most important field of study for learning how to think critically and independently (every university should have at least three philosophy prerequisites imo), but it's also one of THE best majors for going on into law. Law being very lucrative. So it's not useless at all!

I think it's more likely that Amon is someone who has yet to be introduced and has gained the ability to absorb others' bending abilities instead if taking them away. I think he wants to be the only bender and bring his own twisted definition of "balance" to the world.
