Kenri

Not really.

Zero Mission and Dawn of Sorrow are both better in some ways. So is Portrait of Ruin, for that matter. Actually, Metroid Prime (especially the Wii version) is legitimately better if you don't mind the 3D thing. In fact, just in general "other Metroids and Castlevanias" come at least sorta close consistently.

Other Metroidvania games that I really enjoyed:

Aquaria for the PC. Underwater Metroidvania, but somehow still involves platforming, sort of. The story's dumb, but the atmosphere is great.

Monster Tale for the DS. It's a kid's game so expect it to be easy, atmosphere is also kind of lacking, but the combat is really, really fun.

The Divide: Enemies Within for the PS1. This is basically Super Metroid in third-person 3D. The controls are baaaad but you can get used to them. Heavy emphasis on platforming.

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for the GBA. ...It's a Kirby game in Metroid format, that probably sums it up. Instead of collecting power-ups, you can go places if you have the right power, which doesn't work as well as the alternative but is neat, at least.

(Also Fusion has tons of atmosphere so you're just nuts.)

Beautiful Katamari - Katamari Dancing

Man, I don't even know. Except I know this is too long, that much is evident. It's sort of catchy, but only for about two minutes.

Secret of Mana - Kind Memories

Simple, but cute. I sort of like this! Even though I don't have much to say about it...

Final Fantasy Adventure - Let Thoughts Ride on Knowledge

The melody's interesting but I don't really like the samples. YEAH I KNOW IT'S A GAMEBOY GAME but they seem worse than usual.

F-Zero - Mute City

I feel like Mute City in general is better than a lot of other F-Zero songs, and then F-Zero SNES just generally has a more tolerable soundtrack than later games, so... overall this is pretty decent.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - Sloprano

This song always catches me off-guard with its language, in a good way (I think?). I feel like I should hate it, but I actually find it sort of funny... until I have to listen to the whole thing, because it really can't support itself for five minutes.

Rankings:

+5 Mute City
+4 Kind Memories
+3 Sloprano
+2 Let Thoughts Ride on Knowledge
+1 Katamari Dancing

...Side note, was I supposed to rank Sloprano? It looks like it already has 6 rankings down. <_<

LoZ: Link's Awakening - The Frog's Song of Soul

Wow, this is awful, but at least it has the good graces to end really fast, which is something I can really appreciate...

Mass Effect - M4 Part II

...when compared to this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. Why have I been made to listen to this song multiple times. I hate this.

Dynasty Warriors 4 - Eve

This song isn't fantastic, but it's pretty good, and pretty good becomes fantastic after the previous two songs. Eve actually has a lot of neat ideas and I'd gladly listen to it again.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows - Four

Four's pretty decent and, at the very least, pleasant to listen to. It is kind of repetitive, but it's also short, so I don't mind. Yeah, I'd listen to this again.

i maed a gam# w1th z0mb1es 1n it!!!1 - Full song

For what reason was this song created? For what reason does it continue to exist? Answer me that. It went on for 13 minutes. It never had a single minute that was above mediocre. Why does it still exist?

Rankings:

+5 Eve
+4 Four
---Everything after this deserves +1, or preferably negatives+3 Full Song
+2 The Frog's Song of Soul
+1 M4 Part II

Braid - Downstream

This is loooong and I question if it needs to be, but it's also really peaceful and just... nice. Makes me perfect sitting in a garden on a warm spring day or something.

MegaMari - Prologue, Title & Final Battle

It's... okay. The beginning is kind of like obnoxious circus music but it gets past that pretty quick. The rest is decent but just unexceptional.

Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge - Track 3

A bit too... I dunno, bouncy, for my tastes? Might just be the sample quality. In fact I'm pretty sure it is, but the rest of the song isn't fantastic either.

Treasure Quest - He and Beauty

...This isn't Prophecy. Occasionally it has glimpses of... not really brilliance, but of something I'd at least listen to. The rest of it... not so much.

Star Fox - Corneria

Pretty catchy. Really don't like that one effect that sounds like a gear getting caught on something (I think it's supposed to be like... a fake, distorted electric guitar or something?) but I like the rest of the song.

Rankings:

+5 Downstream
+4 Corneria
+3 Prologue, Title, & Final Battle
+2 Track 3
+1 He and Beauty

Legend of Heroes VI - Silver Will

I remember listening to this once a while ago and just thinking it was "okay"... But it's actually pretty good. Maybe I'm thinking of a different song. Anyway, this does have some weird sections that I'm not a big fan of, and it's kind of long, but when it's good, it's really good.

Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness - Erana's Garden

...Is this a remix of Erana's Peace? I honestly can't even tell. Whatever. It's pleasant enough to listen to and not much beyond that. Doesn't stick with me like Erana's Peace does, either.

Illusion of Gaia - Larai Cliff ~ Where the Wind Doesn't Reach

...Wow, I don't like this at all, or even understand what it's trying to accomplish. I guess it's supposed to sound imposing or something, but mostly I'm just caught up in not wanting to listen to it.

Perfect Dark - Chicago (Stealth)

I was on board with this when it was being ambient, less so when it suddenly became a song from Goldeneye near the end. Still pretty cool, though.

Final Fantasy Legend II - The Legend Begins

Not a huge fan of this, but it's a reasonably good chiptune that I don't mind listening to, at least. Just doesn't really stand out to me.

+5 Silver Will
+4 Chicago (Stealth)
+3 The Legend Begins

Sword of Vermillion - Statts

This is actually really cool and not at all what I expected out of Sword of Vermillion. Or really any RPG. Has a really nice beat while also sounding kind of mysterious, which is a combination I don't know if I've heard before. But I like it.

Donkey Kong '94 - The Final Showdown...?

A fairly interesting chiptune with only a couple things working against it. Some of the samples are way too high pitched and actively bother me because of that, and the section that wanted to grow up to be a guitar solo but couldn't quite get there is pretty clearly not as good as the rest of the song.

Double Dragon - Theme

Uhhh it's pretty decent. Nothing exceptional here, but it's competent at least, and doesn't do anything to turn me against it.

Wild aRMs - To a New Journey

As usual, not a huge fan of Wild ARMs' music, though this is decent enough. ...Yeah I've got nothing to say here. It's pleasant enough to listen to, but I just wish it was better.

Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes - Unification of the Land

Unification of the Land does a lot that I associate with traditional Japanese music, which I like, but is much more fast-paced than, for example, most Okami music. It also mixes in a lot of modern touches that work pretty well. I wasn't a big fan of this back in... VGMC5 I think? But I've come around to it. It's pretty good.

Rankings:

+5 Statts
+4 Unification of the Land
+3 Double Dragon Theme
+2 The Final Showdown...?
+1 To a New Journey

EverQuest - Felwithe

*listens to song* *cannot remember a single thing about it even seconds after it ends* *listens again* Oh, it's just unexceptional in basically every way. That explains that.

Contra - Energy Zone

This is okay. It seems kinda slow at times, in a bad way, but the faster sections are pretty decent.

Trine - Crystal Caverns

Crystal Caverns doesn't really do anything to set it apart from any other piano piece I've heard, but it's pleasant enough to listen to. I like it, in fact -- it's just not very unique or memorable.

Digital Devil Saga 2 - Brahman

Pretty good. As usual I'm not a big fan of battle themes, but I've got no big complaints about this one. I really like how it periodically breaks up the song with little piano interludes.

Zone of the Enders 2 - Beyond the Bounds

Aside from that crazy noise at like 40 seconds in (and I've even started to tolerate that after listening to this so many times), I'm a fan of every part of Beyond the Bounds. It even has one of my all-time favorite lines from all the VG songs with lyrics I've heard: Fear to see "The World to Be"

This group was much better.

Unreal Tournament - Run

This is actually really cool and probably the second best track I've heard from Unreal Tournament after Foregone Destruction. Appropriately enough, Run has a great sense of movement which is something I really like. I was initially thinking it wouldn't be able to hold up over 4 and a half minutes, but it manages to change things up frequently enough to stay fresh the whole time.

Sol Survivor - Running Out of Time

This is exactly the kind of music I would love to just put on in the background and only half listen to, which tends to suffer when I have to just sit down and pay attention to it all the way through. But I'll try to ignore that because I like a lot of what this song does.

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel - Sacred

Haha, what is this. I feel like if I stumbled on this on the radio, I would listen to it and then later feel deep shame for having listened to it. I don't know. It's catchy but I can't shake the feeling that I don't like it despite that.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Scrap Brain Zone

I would like this song so much more if not for that knocking sound. I don't even know what that's supposed to be, but it doesn't work on any level. Other than that, Scrap Brain Zone is one of the better songs from Sonic 1, probably only behind Marble Zone.

Amplitude - Shades of Blue

I forget where I heard this first... OST contest maybe? But anyway, I think I have you to thank for it because I think it's a fantastic song and I like pretty much every part of it.

Rankings:

+5 Shades of Blue
+4 Run
+3 Running Out of Time
+2 Marble Zone
+1 Sacred

mini-writeups followed by rankings:

Xenosaga III - Hepatica

Not the best XS3 choice. Give me Godsibb any day. I will say that Hepatica is really cool as a boss theme, but outside the game it suffers from long stretches of time where basically nothing happens. ...Not that those aren't there in-game too, but they're much less noticeable. All that being said, when Hepatica is actually doing something, it's really good! I just wish it was about half as long so it could always be doing something.

Wizball - High Score

So this starts off with weird sound effects that sort of sound like the noise of rubbing two balloons together, it's kind of annoying and didn't put me in a good mood. Thankfully at 1:00 in the song suddenly becomes reasonably competent and I'm left wondering wtf the first minute was about.

Final Fantasy VII - Hurry!

Like most of FFVII's OST, Hurry! is... at least competent. I don't think of it as being much more than that, though, especially in comparison to a lot of FFVII's music which is far beyond competent. I also feel like it's way too ambient for a song called "Hurry!" but it does work pretty well in-game so eh.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Intro Music

Sakimoto's music usually just comes off as bland to me, and this is no expection. The first few seconds are a pretty big nostalgia bomb though, so at least there's that? ...Not that I can really even factor that into a ranking.

Guitar Hero 2 - Jordan

HEY GUITARS. GUITARS YOU GUYS. At least this doesn't annoy me as much as like... Guilty Gear music generally does? Maybe because it's at least somewhat interesting most of the time even if I'm not personally a fan of it.

Rankings:

+5 Hepatica
+4 High Score
+3 Hurry!
+2 Jordan
+1 Intro Music

I will take 5 more if I have not horribly offended you already. <_<

Nintendo used to limit the amount of games that third party developers could release (Konami created the Ultra label to bypass this). This ensured quality, something Nintendo used to value.

Yeah, and it worked - the NES had basically no shovelware, and it wasn't possible for companies like Konami to just create labels like Ultra to bypass that restriction.

Things start up right away, but... the characters, although awesome, are criminally underdeveloped

I have no idea what you're talking about here. I mean, I haven't played a ton of RPGs, but Vesperia is way better about this than basically every other RPG I've played. And that at least includes ToS and TotA.

On topic: 60ish hours for a first playthrough where you don't try to do every sidequest sounds about right.

Antimatter Gun:
-basic shot: not actually antimatter, but strong and fast. Even destroys some stronger enemies in one hit.
-charge shot: creates a small void which draws in and destroys all enemies in the room.
-explosive variant: causes a room encompassing blast that kills all enemies. Most powerful attack in the game and the only way to harm the final boss.

Other equipment:

Flashlight:
-it is a flashlight.
-doesn't ever run out of juice, defying FPS convention.

Jetpack:
-fairly maneuverable, but only vertically.
-about 10 seconds of flight.
-has an underwater variant which is infinite.

Rocket Booties:
-when activated, instantly provides a massive boost in acceleration.
-used to outrun crumbling structures, run on water, run up walls, etc.
-can be spammed as much as you want, but sort of hard to control. Speedrunners love this item.

The AutoSolve 9000:
-provides hints about the game's puzzles.
-in the spinoff manga, Van combines it with his suit's Combat Analyzer to run simulated battles and determine the optimal strategy against his opponents. However these sims are limited to only what Van's suit already knows or can deduce about his opponents.

The AutoRepair 9000:
-constant regen to the suit at about 1 health per second in-game.
-in the manga, much better, instantly repairing even major damage.
-in the manga, it's the first function of Van's suit to malfunction in nearly all his fights.

The Aimbot 9000:
-the in-game justification for the ability to lock onto enemies.
-in the manga, Van turns it off because he doesn't need it. Because, you know. Fiction.

Vision Enhancer:
-zoom.
-thermal vision.
-limited x-ray vision (mostly a gimmick).
-camera.

Force Generator:
-when activated, creates a dome of "hard light" around Van, repelling enemies and their projectiles but allowing Van to shoot out of it freely.
-stronger enemies and attacks can shatter it, as can repeated weaker attacks.
-very large foes (i.e. certain bosses) can just smash it outright.
-takes about a minute to recharge after being broken.

Stationary Camouflage:
-when standing still, Van becomes effectively invisible.
-if he moves or shoots, the effect ends.
-some enemies and most bosses can still find him through other means.

Scout Drone:
-a piece of the suit that breaks off and can be remotely controlled.
-capable of flight.
-Van sees everything it sees.
-can be transformed into a turret that automatically fires on hostiles.
-mostly used to scout and provide covering fire, though its attacks aren't very strong. (They're still bullets, though, so draw your own conclusions.)

Personality:
-Van is a joker who loves to crack wise during battle.
-he doesn't like killing people, but will if he has to.
-because of his line of work, he knows that looks can be deceiving and anyone can be dangerous.
-he's also seen pretty much everything, from dragons to elder gods, necromancers to androids. In other words, it's hard to surprise him.

In the manga:
-all of his parameters are generally improved.
-all of his weapons are stronger and kill things, even bosses, in a few hits at most. (This is technically possible in the games too, though, if speedruns are anything to go by.) This makes the Antimatter Gun seem weaker by comparison.
-he's also a master of hand-to-hand combat, with an emphasis on holds, locks, and throws.

Remember the sci-fi guy I mentioned? Here he is, basically an amalgamation of all my favorite traits from every sci-fi shooterguy out there. >_>; Also, this writeup is very... terse because that was the only way to make it fit in two posts.

Van d'Entente

Main character of the FPS series Funeral Planet. Investigates dying planets using a space-age mechanical armor suit.

The suit protects from:

-extreme hot and cold
-extreme gravity and pressure
-corrosive or poisonous environments
-radiation
-electric shocks
-falls from great heights
-the vacuum of space
-and everything normal armor would protect you from, e.g. blunt force, cutting attacks, etc.

It also dispenses oxygen if necessary and provides some degree of super strength (enough to lift small boulders, etc). Enough punishment can damage or destroy it.

There are a number of weapons built into Van's suit. These fire from his right hand and can be switched between at will. Each weapon has a basic shot, charged shot, and explosive variant (some effect loaded onto a missile, bomb, or grenade):

Welding Gun:
-basic shot: effectively melee range, very powerful. Used in combat and to actually weld things.
-charge shot: flamethrower. Less powerful, more range, big spread.
-explosive variant: lobs a ball of plasma that explodes on impact. Strong enough to destroy heavily armored, state of the art security doors (think futuristic bank vaults).

Chloro Gun:
-basic shot: beam of light that causes plants to grow. Only used for puzzles.
-charge shot: blast of light that causes plants to grow from wherever it hits, entangling foes. Also causes plant-based enemies to mutate wildly until unable to move.
-explosive variant: the opposite, instantly kills all plant-life in the blast radius.
--bosses and stronger enemies take multiple hits for these effects to work.

Carbon Gun:
-basic shot: holds smaller enemies in place with a space-age, fast-hardening substance.
-charge shot: shotgun-like spread that holds even larger enemies and for longer periods of time.
-explosive variant: explodes outwards in an AoE burst.
--getting frozen is actually harmless (and in some ways protective); the explosive variant will still mess you up though (it is a missile).

Spark Gun:
-basic shot: quickest firing but pretty weak. Shots are essential arcs of lightning, aggressively homing and in-game have no travel time at all.
-charge shot: stronger and if it hits an enemy, branches out from them and hits all nearby enemies.
-explosive variant: causes a lasting dome of electricity where it hits. Van can pass through this harmlessly, enemies cannot, so it can be used to trap and repeatedly damage enemies or Van can stand inside it for defense.
--Spark Gun does more damage against mechanical foes, as you might expect.

Sound Gun:
-basic shot: burst of high frequency sound. Seems harmless but wreaks havoc on your internal organs. Moves at speed of sound.
-charge shot: focused beam, travels faster and further, even through walls and enemies.
-explosive variant: causes a lasting screech which blocks out all other sound in the vicinity; mostly a gimmick.
--This is the best gun for most of the game.

Photon Gun:
-basic shot: effectively a sniper rifle. Very long range and powerful, very fast travel time (in-game, it's hitscan).
-charge shot: quickly charging (less than a second), but does nothing by itself. Allows you to fire one basic shot. Think of it more as reloading.
-explosive variant: guided missile. Van can't really multitask while guiding it.
