I dunno if college is a good investment for the median person though. If you just give an 18-yr-old 200k instead of college, I imagine a lot of people would take the 200k. And if they made decent investments with that and lived frugally, they could conceivably live on that the rest of their lives without working.

It is pretty crazy that US universities are pretty expensive. I go to UBC (ranked between 30-40 in the world) and my undergraduate will probably end up costing 40k. From what I heard a similarily ranked school for a US citizen would cost twice as much.

US universities are the best in the world in research. They have a large majority of all Nobel Prizes in the past few decades. The tuition goes to fund research, which produces prestige for the school, which makes its graduates more employable. People will pay a lot for prestige. If you don't want that, you generally can go to state schools for a lot less.

Also, most people don't actually pay sticker price. A lot of that money collected from rich and upper middle class students goes to financial aid for poorer students. Then there are also merit scholarships.

Since the Supreme Court has kindly informed us that corporations are people*, why shouldn't they be able to run for president?

So, who would you vote for: Michelle Bachmann or Goldman Sachs?

*It's not necessary to discuss how this ruling does not actually make corporations eligible for the presidency; let's just assume they can run for the purposes of this topic.

This was not frivolous. If you applied the same percentage mischarge to all of Wal-Mart's sales, it amounts to 50% of their annual profits. 8 billion dollars a year. 2 cents on an item on which the store's profit margin was 2 cents? That's a lot.

And as she had already sued several times before this for the same thing, Wal-Mart's excuse that it was an accident is flimsy. After losing several lawsuits and paying damages each time, the store should have been well aware this was happening. It probably was an accident nonetheless, but Wal-Mart should try as hard as it can to avoid this kind of accident.

Private quality assurance like that is good as long as it's fully optional and not binding on consumers. For example, if Pepsi decided they didn't want to associate with the American Beverage Association anymore, they could still sell their drinks and people would still buy them.

Actually, even this kind of regulation is potentially bad for consumers, because smaller soda companies (say, Jones Soda) would have a much harder time ignoring the regulatory organization. If Pepsi or Coke does it, people won't think there's anything wrong with the soda, but if Jones Soda did it, people would likely be cautious and not buy it. On the other hand, it helps smaller companies to have consumers trust their products in the first place, so it could also be a good thing.

IMO the top 1% and the Tea Party should retaliate by lobbying Congress to put in fully regressive tax rates:

80% on the first 10k of income
70% from 10k to 20k
60% from 20k to 40k
50% from 40k to 80k
40% from 80k to 160k
30% from 160k to 320k
20% from 320k to 1M
10% from 1M to 10M
5% from 10M to 100M
1% from 100M to 1B
No tax above 1B
No capital gains tax

Then the Republicans in the Senate can threaten to filibuster everything unless this is passed. They can use this tax plan as leverage to force the Democrats to acquiese to more limited goals.

the country is run mostly by former KGB members and the mafia.

Sounds like a lot of regulation to me! And not really surprising given Russia's longstanding history of a central planned economy going back to 1917.

As for accounting regulations, those aren't regulations so much as saying you can't commit fraud. And you shouldn't be able to commit fraud, a free market system must have laws.

And if I'm going shopping, how much do I care that Wal-Mart is "evil."? Probably not as much as the time and money I'll save by shopping there. I mean, there are companies I genuinely think are evil and will avoid, even paying a high premium for a competitor. For example, Goldman Sachs. But most people clearly don't think Wal-Mart is that evil, since they continue to shop there. And for Goldman, most of their clientele either don't think they are evil or don't care, too.

Why would Wal-Mart be struggling? They offer lots of products to consumers at cheap prices in the same place. It saves consumers time and money. Why shouldn't consumers choose to shop there?

Big business will not police itself. The free market will do so to the extent that the people want to. And if the people don't want to, why on earth are we forcing it on them?

To answer the original question: maybe because they don't think the free market is ever a problem? It's perfectly reasonable to believe that the free market is, in fact, always right. Just because it's obvious that the other extreme is wrong doesn't mean all extremes are wrong.

The vast majority of regulations are bad. I'd include private regulations in there, because it has the same effect: to increase the barrier to entry and stifle competition. This helps large corporations and hurts consumers.

Private reviews or ratings agencies are good though (like Metacritic and what S&P/Moody's would be if they did their job properly).
