med and law schools would probably care more about your GPA percentile at a school with more grade deflation. Brown doesn't officially calculate GPA though.

While we would like to believe this, it's basically not true. There's an organization (LSAC and AMCAS) that you send your transcripts to, and they calculate your GPA based on the grades on there. So everyone across the country has a standardized GPA. They don't adjust for grade inflation or the difficulty of the program.

Med and law schools care about making their admissions stats as high as possible, so they treat grades from all colleges more or less the same, since what they have to report is their median GPA according to LSAC/AMCAS. These stats influence their rankings heavily and they take them very seriously. Some law schools at least have gotten pretty ridiculous with gaming the system to maximize their medians.

For example, here's a graph for Washington University in St. Louis's law school from last year (the data is self-reported by applicants).

http://washu.lawschoolnumbers.com/stats/1011/

Based on that graph, if you have a 168+ LSAT you are admitted no matter how low your GPA is. But if you have a 167, you need a 3.7-3.8 to avoid a waitlist. Why? Because the school was trying to raise its LSAT median to 168 last year, and since people with 168+ and high GPAs usually choose other schools over them, they had to admit a lot of people with low GPAs in order to get the 168 median.

If a person is going to be below the GPA median, it doesn't impact the median how far below it they are. So, if you want 168/3.7 medians, it makes sense to reject the 167/3.6 person and take the 168/2.5 person.

-Brown is a fruity place for hippies with no academic standards where you can pass/fail your way to a degree.

a) our acceptance rate was lower than yours this year (8.7% vs somewhere above 10%). "no standards" my ass.

Don't go to either school, but I want to point out that that may be precisely why Brown's acceptance rate is lower!

b) most Brown people don't pass/fail their way to a degree - that's a false stereotype. most of us who want to go to grad school are taking all the courses we can to a degree (there are some that are mandatory satisfactory/no credit, but those are mostly intro courses).

Brown does give very high grades compared to other schools, and this is an advantage to students who apply to grad school. Medical and law schools at least care a lot about your undergrad GPA, and very little about the context (it matters very little how hard your school or your major is, or how impressive your GPA is relative to your classmates).

From a student's point of view, these are good things about Brown.

It's not a strange result. Galaxy 1 > Galaxy 2, as some of us have been insisting the whole season.

Edit: That was meant to sound more like a subtle jab than a definitive opinion, but it didn't come out the right way.

didn't you just say before you guys would beat the Yankees in a 7 game set by outscoring us?

I had no confidence in them beating any team except the Yankees.

Also, in the scenario that they did somehow win the ALDS, that would mean that something must have turned around simply by virtue of them winning that series.

Well, I'm going to take consolation knowing that we probably would have lost in the ALDS anyway. I don't think we've won a series since August, so no reason we could have started now when we can't even win against the Orioles.

Thanks Yankees. Not laying down for the Rays. Now we just have to hold this lead on the Orioles! Seems like the best way to do that is to score more though, as I have no confidence in our ability to stop them from scoring.

Also, repeating this prediction: if we meet the Yankees in the ALCS, we're winning 4-1.

Not fair.

Polls opening at midnight is a big reason. I think another one is that people tend to be home and on Gamefaqs late at night.....and 10 PM - 4 AM is only 7 PM - 1 AM on the West Coast. 4 AM is also late enough that we get some European posters posting in the morning over there.

I'd give Nader and Colbert's numbers to Obama/liberals.

A few months ago I did a series of head to head polls between Obama and others, and he beat Ron Paul by one vote. He won against all the major current Republican candidates though, and several past Republican presidents. Then he ran into Eisenhower and got stomped 90-10.

With regards to Mario/Sonic, I have a much easier time seeing them lose to Link/Ganon than Cloud/Sephiroth. Mario/Sonic should be the strongest rivalry, but Link would wreck both Mario and Sonic 1 on 1. He'd be well north of 50% in a 3-way poll, probably north of 55%.

Cloud/Sephiroth
Link/Ganondorf
Mario/Bowser
Solid Snake/Liquid Snake (or Ocelot)
X/Zero

Crono/Magus
Sonic/Knuckles (or Shadow)
Charizard/Blastoise
Mega Man/Proto Man (or Dr. Wily)
Ryu/Ken

Samus/Ridley does feel off, as does Mega Man to a lesser extent. X/Zero should be golden.

What kind of regulations? Rules to stop banks from taking too many risks? If it were up to me, I'd institute a weekly work limit for Wall Street- say, you cannot work more than 60 hours a week. People working 100 hours a week are probably getting so little sleep/non-work time that they're functionally drunk. We should not be entrusting the economic health of the nation to people working 100 hours a week.

The too big to fail doctrine is a very dangerous idea. It encourages banks to put as many people in danger through their decisions as possible, because that will give them leverage to force the people to bail them out if their risks go badly.

I think a Tea Party president would probably result in banks taking less risks, actually- because they'll realize that Mr. Crazy Tea Party President may not care that we'll get 25% unemployment and all the other nasty stuff economists said would happen if we didn't bail out the banks that were too big to fail. He might just take a stand on principle and refuse.

Though excessive risk-taking doesn't seem to be a problem right now- just the opposite, actually, according to the Obama administration and the Fed, which have been trying to get credit flowing again, but haven't been too successful.

Sorry this post has been so rambling, I wanted to say a little on a bunch of different things.

I'm not totally against regulations, but as a general guideline, I'd say that regulations should only exist to protect freedom, not to reduce it. So, we can have a law banning people from selling themselves as slaves or buying others as slaves. This takes away some freedom (the freedom to sell yourself into slavery), but it protects other freedom (the freedom to make all your other decisions for the rest of your life), so I'd argue it's a net positive for freedom.

Are there situations where it's genuinely a good idea for someone to want to sell themselves into slavery? Sure, perhaps 2 people are on the verge of death by starvation, and there's only enough food for one of them. There's a 50/50 chance the one who doesn't get the food will die before they get more food. In this case the two people might agree to a deal: one person gets the food and becomes the other person's slave if they both end up surviving. The parties might not be willing to give up their shot at the food for anything less.

But such situations are exceedingly rare, and in any case, we could argue that freedom is more important than life, so even this case would not justify slavery.

And Charizard beat Bowser and came close to beating Mario. Throw Blastoise in there and they could beat Mario/Bowser, who would come close to, if not beat Cloud/Sephiroth.

No, Charizard/Blastoise would not come near Mario/Bowser. Though I would like to see the look on Leon's face if it happens. But it won't happen. Mario/Bowser is far more iconic, Mario > Charizard, and Bowser > Blastoise.

As for 55%, it's hard to put up 55% on Cloud. Really hard. Link's never gotten 54% before, even on the day TP came out. In 5 years he's moved up 1% on Cloud. If you want to be more generous to Link we can extend that timeframe back to 2003, in which case he's gained 5% in 7 years.
