FFA is pretty much an RPG with no separate battle screen and a real-time battle system that lets you directly control your character. I mean, just look at the game. Experience points, levels, towns, and RPGish equipment system. It's clearly a lot further along the RPG spectrum than Zelda.

I suppose animals being my only real life friends does affect my opinion on this, but I'd consider dog fighting just about the worst thing someone could do aside from killing, raping, or torturing a human being.

So no, I'm not satisfied that Vick was adequately punished. If a serial rapist or murderer is released from prison, I'm not going to be okay with him just because he "did his time" and says he's sorry.

I don't get why the N64 is totally lacking in the RPG department.

Pretty much all the third parties largely jumped to the Playstation because of cost issues. It also came out sooner, by over a year in Japan.

N64 ownership in Japan was abysmal (it lost to the Saturn there!), and the western market for JRPGs wasn't really important until FFVII AFAIK, so it didn't make much sense to create RPGs for the N64. FFVII created a mass western market for them, but it did so on the PS1, so where do you think the other companies following the trend put their games? I think Square in particular only developed games for PS1/PS2 for several years, which is a big chunk of a potential RPG library right there. Paper Mario came out too late and Nintendo themselves never really did much else to show there was a point to developing RPGs on their system.

3/10 sounds pretty fair. Game is pretty low on my list of RPGs and I played the GBC version. Which I think was supposed to be better or something.

If you're extremely desperate, Final Fantasy III/VI is available on Virtual Console. It includes a menu option to assign battle control of individual characters to a second controller. If it comes to that though you should probably just go with Tales of Symphonia. >_>

Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy was awesome in arcades so I assume the Gamecube version would be good as well.

A couple people mentioned the Fire Emblem fanbase.

I'm wondering what exactly their standards are here. I'm part of that fanbase and it's very fun, but it's definitely not very chill, has lots of elitists and stupid arguments, and a pretty high amount of creepiness. Also, the massive amount of trolling. Granted, the trolling is a good part of why I like it, I've done quite a bit myself, but I don't think that's what most people have in mind when they think of a fanbase as being "good!"

...Hmmm. I tend to eventually go back to games I liked.
A bit doubtful if I will ever feel like playing Metroid Prime 2 again, and that was at least a good game.
Maybe Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 for Gamecube. Don't really have anyone to play with for multiplayer on those anymore and I'm not sure I want to bother with their single player.

Currently playing, still too early for me to fairly rate.

With the loading times being this bad and the start being this slow though, the game would have to be pretty excellent from here on out for me to give it an 8.5.

Ultimaphazon summarized the general issues with Chrono Cross, but I'll go more into detail.

Soundtrack generally didn't do it for me, though; it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't my thing. Did like the graphics on many of the out-of-battle environments, so there was still a saving grace for me.

There are themes and events throughout, but many of them feel disconnected and unimportant on the whole, and it's pretty late in the game that you find out what the hell the actual plot of the game is. You don't even find out some very important information until an extended info-dump by some NPCs immediately before the final boss. In the end a lot of things just don't make much sense. And that ending. Uh. Wow. And not in a good way.

Having so many characters doesn't do much for the gameplay since you only have a three-person party, the main is locked to it forever, they're not especially distinct from each other, and you can only change your party at a save point/the world map. But because there are so many characters, and you're almost always free to choose what non-main character you are using, virtually none of them can be important plotwise and most of the cast has to have a weird accent in order to distinguish their personality.

Battle system is slow and not being able to tell when enemies were going to attack was annoying. It was also pretty annoying when the enemy got a OHKO and my options for reviving characters was so limited. And maybe I was just bad, but Diminish was really the only reason some of those boss battles stayed reasonable.

Non-boss enemies were pretty pointless in most respects; they won't beat you, they don't even really weaken you for the next battle, you can't grind off of them much, and you only need enough money, materials, and elements to outfit three people. Admittedly many RPGs have this problem to some degree, it's just especially noticeable here.

The game has a lot of interesting features to streamline the gameplay (Running away being so easy, auto-allocating elements, the healing after battle, "level-ups" after every boss, etc.), which is nice, but...well, if I'm not doing much actual gameplay other than boss fights, and the plot is pretty questionable, where was the game supposed to be good?

Just finished Chrono Cross earlier this week for the first time. I knew it wasn't going to be Chrono Trigger 2, but that was okay, I didn't really want a hack sequel of Chrono Trigger anyways.

And I still found the game very disappointing.
