Ugh Brawl and TP in the finals, that would signal that it's about time to leave this board. I think we need another round of OOT vs. FFVII, and Link vs. Cloud, for the site contests. In fact, why not have an all Nintendo/Square contest? That way we can throw out all the boring (read: non-Nintendo/Square) characters.

Words can acquire new meanings.
Communism = Everything that is wrong in the world. Communist = Someone who supports Communism. As George Bush said in 2000: "When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world, and you knew exactly who they were. It was us versus them, and it was clear who them was. Today we are not so sure who the they are, but we know they're there." With the collapse of the Soviet Union and China's conversion to capitalism in everything but name, communism had to take on a new meaning or else become irrelevant. And we can't just retire a word that had represented the national enemy for 50 years that easily! -- 90s games > 00s games |

But you're far less likely to die from lynch mob in early 20th century America than from disease/lack of medical care/lion/etc in a Stone Age community in Africa (I'm assuming that by "jungle" he meant a Stone Age community and not a more advanced civilization). It's not just about the way you die, you also have perhaps double the life expectancy. How much would you give to live twice as long?
I'll admit I don't have much first hand knowledge of what most black people would actually choose. I mean, it was a bad comparison because it didn't have any bearing on the question. Of course 20th century America has a higher standard of living than Stone Age Africa. We don't need capitalism to explain that. -- 90s games > 00s games |

Um, of all the things he said, that was one of the least controversial. The test for which is better is pretty simple: ask people which they would choose. Very few people are going to choose the African "jungle."

If you were to make a graph showing the average human standard of living and also plot the overall value and respect for property rights, I'm guessing they'd be practically the same line, a steady trend uphill until around the 1920s when the progressives came in and absolutely wrecked everything. Perhaps you believe those two things are totally unrelated and its all a massive coincidence. I do not.
For standard of living, it would be a line trending very very slowly uphill until around 1800, with major setbacks (standard of living in the Roman Empire was better than it was for hundreds of years afterwards), and then rapidly and steadily uphill after 1800. No, it did not stop its ferocious uphill climb after the 1930s. -- 90s games > 00s games |

Let's assume that it would all be borrowed money. If you were just starting college, how much more money would you pay to go to Harvard, or a peer school like Yale and Stanford, over:
1. Elite schools like Columbia, Dartmouth, and Chicago 2. Very good public schools like Berkeley, UCLA, and Virginia 3. Good private schools like NYU and Boston College 4. Less prestigious local state schools, or less prestigious private schools. 5. Schools with bad reputations for academics. 6. Community college. 7. No college. -- 90s games > 00s games |

Only when someone won't share with them.
But ask them to share with someone else, and you'll get a different story! Actually, my experience has been that most children do not complain that others won't share with them. They complain that their parents won't buy them the things the other child's parents bought. Children are generally aware of the property rights of the other child; but they feel they deserve the same, so they demand it from their parents. Children also protest that it's not fair when they are forced to share with others. And they are quite right in that scenario. -- 90s games > 00s games |

We really need to stop forcing children to "share" things in kindergarten/elementary school. I'm not sure that it's natural though.....it could also be learned very very early on from our culture, which is very much about ownership.

For Snake/Batman, I'm not saying that you can use "he'll think of something" as a blanket argument, just that you need to believe that he could find something (and a route to victory exists) that you're not seeing.
Actually, MPFC is badly named. "Most Powerful Fictional Character" on its face implies who could win in a fight, not who will win in a fight. -- 90s games > 00s games |

I would prefer a contest more focused on power, actually (since it's true that so many of the powerful characters are terribly written). For someone like Snake, though, it's totally legitimate to argue: he would think of something. Snake is supposed to be smarter than most of us are, he's supposed to be able to think of things that most of us can't.

49. solarshadow's Contest Stats and Discussion: I've been a part of a few subgroups on B8, and the stats topic has been one of the most unfriendly of the lot. I've never been the best with stats, and I remember people (especially the 'legendary' creativename) flat-out insulting me when I asked noobish questions. That obviously doesn't reflect on everyone: a lot of the regulars are quite welcoming, but I got severely turned off by that experience. Apart from that, it seems like the stats topic is prone to overexaggeration (see people calling a match within the first 15 minutes) and heavy reliance on numbers (see the entire 'lol xstats' meme). It deserves a fair bit of credit for being probably the longest-running, most successful thing in B8 history.
I'm sorry to hear that we were unfriendly. I think the topic is usually quite nice outside of debates like Mario/Samus and Melee/Brawl, where the debates were centered on "common sense" instead of stats and past contest results. The nice thing about numbers is that no one is going to proclaim a match obvious based on the numbers unless it truly is obvious, whereas with "common sense," people will disagree and mock the other side as stupid for missing something they claim was patently obvious. I think the overexaggeration/calling matches early thing is a bit of a joke now, or at least I hope it is. Then again, now that I think about it.....probably it's not for half the people posting in the topic. -- 90s games > 00s games |
