It doesnt have to be but it can become one, and if it wins.. you and him get credited with the win. This happen once with Tom Nook.
Lloyd Irving and Tom Nook lost because... I don't think many Tales fans like Lloyd (alot of them seem to hate him for some reason) though I expected him to come closer. Maybe his portrait wasn't cool enough? Tom Nook just isn't that great; he's the annoying shop keeper that I kept thinking was going to attack me if I didn't start paying off my debts (I had the money, but I spent it on a piano; no, I don't know how to play the piano; no, I don't have room in my house for it). The Pokemon trainers asked Ryu & Ken if they could advance to the next round. Ken started to say "SHOR-YU.." but Ryu stopped him and took him to the side to explain to him to "NEVER use that move in this contest EVER!"
All of a sudden Ryu and Ken are blown away by a very lethal attack... and the person who struck both of them down, appears.
The Pokemon trainers are confused, and ask him "Who are you? and are you gonna let us go the next round or not?
Angry, the unknown person Screams "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'M MEGA MAN B****! SCREW CAPCOM! SO SHOR-YU-KEN!"

Capcom has drawn MAJOR heat because they killed there mascot off the face of the earth. You don't cancel Mega Man games, and you don't reject your mascot from being a Marvel vs Capcom game.
