RPG developers could stand to listen to these people.

Tangentially related to number one: the characters are almost always in their teens or early twenties, with everyone older than thirty being called "old." I get that developers want to market these games to Japanese teenagers, since that's where the money is, but are you telling me that the youth of Japan would like a game less if its main cast were over the age of twenty-seven?

2006 killed it for me. As bad as Summer 2004 and the villains contest were, I still enjoyed Summer 2005. 2006 marked the beginning of contest gimmicks, which not only caused its own bracket to be crammed full of complete fodder (thanks to the asinine male/female idea) but served as an admission that these contests had run their course. Four-ways were an interesting idea, but I just plain wasn't interested by then, since the so-called "magic" was gone. Plus, Summer 2005 would have served perfectly well as a sendoff to the idea.

How to bring the magic back: Game contest. 1v1 polls. Bracket seeded normally and not organized by year, generation, system, or anything like that. Throw FF7 and the N64 Zelda games into a Tournament of Champions. If this doesn't get decent vote totals, we can all admit that contests are truly dead.

I remember laughing when Latios came out. Tobias just doesn't play fair.

And yeah, the episode was seriously flawed. Even if you want to make the excuse that Charizard couldn't make it to the tournament in time, there really was no reason not to use Snorlax. I appreciated that the writers tried something different with the obligatory "Ash loses so that the show can continue" episode: rather than have Ash get screwed by outside circumstances (like against Ritchie) or lose due to making some stupid mistakes (like against Harrison and Tyson), Ash is set up from the beginning to face an impossible-to-win scenario, and the episode is a test of how he reacts to it. Or something.

Maaaaaybe the writers can make up for this by having Tobias show up again in the future. And maybe all of us will be abducted by aliens.

The biggest problem is the writers establish Ash here as being competent enough that it takes physical gods to defeat him. This makes his treatment in BW a little, uh, yeah.

Torterra's only real loss is to Electivire (which knew Ice Punch). You can't seriously consider the loss to Bertha.

But that's part of the problem when I say Torterra was badly handled in general. It evolved so late that there wasn't much of a chance for it to do anything impressive. Its only battles were against an Elite Four member (whom Ash obviously isn't allowed to beat) and a gym battle where the main focus was Infernape controlling Blaze. It just got stuck playing the fall guy, which was really disappointing. If Ash had just used it in one of the other league battles or something, it would have been nice.

Too bad Ash never bothered to teach Torterra any ground-type moves. That probably would have helped a bit.

Really, Torterra getting one-shotted by Drapion could have been a big moment in the battle: everyone is shocked that Torterra's defense is overcome so easily, and everyone starts to think that Ash is screwed, but Ash still says, "Screw you, I'm the main character, so I'm gonna fight on and win!" The problem being that Torterra always got punked before this battle as well, so it losing without accomplishing anything again is just business as usual.

Agreed. Best battle in the series. Only thing I didn't like was how they handled Torterra. Really, the way Torterra was handled in general was just awful.

And I'm surprised Anagram didn't point out Ash's idiocy in the Pikachu/Electivire battle. "I need to draw in Electivire into a close-quarters battle, even though it's already been using close-range attacks the whole time! I know! I'll activate Motor Drive and make it faster! Now, I could use Thunderbolt to do this, but it'll be much better if I use Volt Tackle and cause my already-on-its-last-legs Pikachu to get even more hurt! Brilliant!"

I wonder who would win in a battle between the two if Paul used his Lake Acuity team with Weavile switched out for Drapion, and Ash used his six strongest Pokemon (whoever they might be; it's debatable).

Final Fantasy wins for longevity of quality. Save for FF2j, every main series entry up through and including FF10 ranges from "really damn good" to "freakin' great." It's been crap ever since, but nothing will ever take away from this decade-plus run. 90s Square just plain rocked.

Chrono wins for quality of its single best game. Can't touch Chrono Trigger.

I tried to think of a winner in terms of good-to-bad game ratio, but there was no clear-cut standout.

EDIT: Or is there? I almost hate to say it, since I don't consider any of its games to be spectacular or anything, but I'd give the nod to Pokemon. Every main series game is at least "pretty good," and I wouldn't call any of them "bad."

Honestly, if I were in charge, I'd have changed the ending once I found out the show was getting a second season.

Keep everything the same up to the point where Korra enters the Avatar State. Add a line or two from Aang about how her role as the avatar is "just beginning" (set to the already-done shot of Korra with the "avatar eyes" on loop, maybe zooming in or out so it doesn't become obvious). Cut the few seconds of her showing she can bend again. Keep the shot of Mako looking on from afar in shock just to fill up time. If this makes the episode too short, tell Nickelodeon to make a couple of the commercial breaks longer. You know they'd love that.

And whammo. An ending that sets up a second season better, and it wouldn't require any new animation. All it would take is a couple extra recorded lines from Aang's voice actor. The only real downside I could see to this is having to scrap the sweet shot of Korra bending all four elements. Stuff like Korra returning Mako’s love and Tenzin saying he’s proud of Korra could wait for (and possibly have a greater impact in) a later season.

Obviously I have no right to tell other people how to spend their money, but when people complain about barely scraping by month after month while making odd financial decisions, I just have to wonder.

There's a guy in his fifties with five kids, all between the ages of six and fifteen, who lives in the same building I do. Nice guy, nice family. He, his wife, and every single one of his children all own iPhones. So, he constantly complains about barely being able to cover his living expenses, and his three sons all share a room that was designed for one person (and forcing a high schooler to room with a kindergartener is just asking for trouble), but damn it, every member of the family right down to the six-year-old needs a smart phone, even if it means paying for seven data plans!

A friend of mine goes out drinking every night and frequently spends upwards of $100. He complains about being poor while spending between $2500 and $3000 a month on alcohol. I've pointed out to him, as a friend, that he could save a lot of money if he only went out once or twice a week and/or cut back a bit when he did, but he always insists that it helps him "escape from the agony of being poor." Obviously this guy's problems go beyond financial sense and the ability to recognize irony; a bunch of my friends and I have been encouraging him to go to rehab for a while now.

Then there's the friend of mine who blew over $1500 on an HDTV despite "drowning in debt" (his words). He's one of those "anyone who doesn't own an HDTV is living in the stone age" types, but having no furniture whatsoever at your place and sleeping in a sleeping bag because you can't afford a mattress strikes me as far more "stone age-esque" than settling for an SDTV. The guy can't even get a decent job because he doesn't have any nice clothes to wear to a job interview because he can't afford them. I'd offer to let him borrow mine, but he's several sizes larger than I am.

May God have mercy on our souls.

I don't get the idea of "don't buy this one, wait for the improved version!". There's always gonna be another improved version a couple years later; if you won't buy it until they stop putting out new and improved versions, you'll just be waiting forever.

It's an issue of whether the device is even worth owning before the remodel. Every system I've bought within the last ten years has been a redesign, not because the "improved versions" were necessarily that much better, but because those systems didn't have enough games to warrant a purchase before the redesign. Why buy something you're not going to use all that often when a better version could come out later? And then there are those who buy every iteration of a product at launch. That's an idea I don't get.

Granted, this doesn't look all that much better than the standard 3DS. But that's the other big advantage of waiting for an updated version: the earlier iteration should drop in price. Woohoo! Now if only the 3DS had a few more games...

I was going to make a list of snubs, but it wound up being longer than his actual list. So many great episodes. You Only Move Twice is great, but I don't know about "top ten" great. Hank Scorpio's probably the best one-shot character ever though. That man needs his own show.

And yeah, his rant at the beginning is pretty predictable, but it seems to be required by law that every discussion of The Simpsons involve some mention of how the show should have ended years ago (i think it should have ended after season eight oh darn there i go).

Not a great video or a great list, but looking at past NC videos, it could have been a lot worse.
