The site was scarcely established in 1995. I think it would be more interesting to guess on what the strongest characters would have been when the PotDs first started in, what, 1999?

For interests' sake, here was a poll in December of '99:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3

How would you tier the top characters at that time?

In '99 Cloud and Sephiroth would destroy anything in the contest. The guides for FFVII was the reason this site became popular in the first place, and it was the top game on the site for like five years straight.

Iceland has a law that in order to be a citizen you have to change your given name to one of the 5000 approved first names, and your surname into (father's first name + son) if you're a man or (mother's first name + dottir) if you're a woman.

It's a part of their policy of preserving the language.

Well if you're going to put all the Moxen and Sol Ring as one entry, sure! Still, I'd put Vampiric Tutor/Imperial Seal, Time Vault and Tinker all over it as well.

If you'd want to split the moxen then only the Sapphire and maybe the Jet places above the academy. Both white and red are quite bad in vintage.

Tolarian Academy is no doubt the most powerful land ever printed. Especially when you consider all the moxen and ways to untap it using spells like Time Spiral, it's restricted in Vintage, and if it wasn't you see a swarm of super high.tide-style decks with turn 1 kills being the norm.

It's a tough competition to be on the top 10 list, but I'd say it can do it

(0. Contract from Below)
1. Ancestral Recal
2. Black Lotus
3. Yawgmoth's Will
4. Necropotence
5. Sol Ring/Moxen
6. Tolarian Academy
7. Mana Drain/Force of Will
8. Bazaar of Baghdad
9. Mishra's Workshop
10. Tinker
11. Time Vault
12. Time Walk
13. Demonic Tutor/Vampiric Tutor
14. Strip Mine
15. Oath of Druids

Morphling is widely considered the most powerful creature ever created, partly because it's incredibly reslient, nigh impossible to kill, and can provide a killing blow for control decks.

This might've been true back in the day, but no-one uses the guy anymore. He's way to expensive. If you play a spell with CMC 5 in an eternal format it better win you the game on the spot eg. Ad Nauseum, just being a useful creature don't cut it. Especially when it requires you to always keep mana open. If control decks nowadays want a killing blow they go for Tarmogoyf, Stoneforge Mystic + Batterskull or just a Jace.

Kratos/Zeus is probably going to win this entire thing. It's not like Kratos don't get around, but even he is dwarfed by Zeus, that guy probably beats the entire bracket on his own.

Canonicaly, Dracula is only confirmed having sex with his first wife (from Lament of innocense) and with Lisa (mother of Alucard, died sometime in the 1500s.) The only canon-relationship Alucard has (since Legends were removed from canon) is with Maria, and that is the origin of Eric Lecarde in Bloodlines

The major thing is that Advent Children is a movie, a non-interactive medium. So it's ok and in fact necessary for them to decide what they want and then go with it.

FF8 on the other hand, is a game. And the chief characteristic of games that differentiate them from other mediums is that you have (or should have) an impact on what happens. I'm not saying FF7 did it perfectly (Persona 4 on the other hand did that part very well) but the choices you make does have an influence on the outcome. To not have that but still give options that seem like they ought to bring different outcomes is to missuse the possibilities offered by the medium.

Well, I was sort of counting Advent Children into the equation.

why in the world would you do that? In the game, the difference is huge, if you were nice it's heavily implied that they sleep together, and if you were mean, then those implications are gone. That's the sort of thing you'd look for in a game that gives you choices concerning romance.

I guess one of the most interesting things to find out about this contest is how seriously people take the "rivalry" thing.

I imagine there might exist a sort of hierarchy between the different types of rivalries, that might influence their performances.

Legendary gaming rivalry (Mario/Sonic)
Personal nemeses (e.g. Cloud/Sephiroth Frog/Magus)
Good-guy rivals (e.g. X/Zero, Cecil/Kain)
Hero-Bad guy (e.g. Link/Ganon, Crono/Lavos)
Bad-guy rivals (e.g. Xemnas/Marluxia)
Romantic rivals (e.g. Tifa/Aeris)
