Everything was wrong with this contest. The idea sucked. And it didn't help that the bracket was very poorly set up. Give me (or anyone who really knows the stats) the opportunity to make the bracket, and... I may not be able to stop Link from winning... but I could create a bracket where 3/4 of the matches would be in debate, and it would at least still be fun.

It's about popularity. Pokémon's gotten more popular over the years, FF7 hasn't.

Additionally, if we were to be speaking in terms of the quality of the actual rivalry, Cloud and Sephiroth are merely protagonist-antagonist in their relationship. Red/Blue are literally introduced to you as rivals and their rivalry is constantly present throughout the game as one of the driving points of the player's motivation to keep training.

You could make a mild argument that Cloud has some sort of rivalry of ambition with Sephiroth during the backstory, but not really. Cloud/Zack would be more of a rivalry, and even then, meh.

What's an actual rivalry in FFVII? I can really think of a good one.Tifa and Aeris... (for Cloud's affection), maybe.

Keeping in mind that Link trounced Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

Batman, Superman, Darth Vader, Aragorn, Harry Potter, Albert Einstein, Gandhi, Julius Caesar, The Lord Almighty God (written that way), Putin, Chuck Norris.

Took the Bosses over Samus as a last ditch effort to win the Battle Bracket. Didn't happen, naturally. And I can't catch him now.

No Noble Niner has lost to a non-joke character, 1 v. 1,, but that absolutely does not mean that the Noble Nine holds any more. The matches that would take them down just haven't been set up yet.

It definitely holds for:
Link
Cloud
Sephiroth
Mario
and Solid Snake

Mega Man seems to be holding on, but Samus and Sonic have gotten much, much weaker, and Chrono would lose to many characters now, if those matches were to take place.

I would no longer trust Chrono against:
Squall, Vincent, Auron, Ganon, Bowser, Yoshi, Tifa, Aeris, Luigi, PTR, Charizard, Pikachu, Mewtwo, Ryu, Leon, or Dante.

In a close match, the b8 favorite will win.

No exceptions.

Thank you.
Finally, someone who understands.

The main reason that this contest has been awful (with absolutely no upsets of any kind) is because the vote totals are so low, that in close matches the bracket voters (through the B8 consensus) have skewed every match in favour of the favourite.
It's the same reason that matches that were though to have a very small chance of being an upset (like matches predicted to be in the 55-45 to 60-40 range, ended up as 75-25 blowouts throughout the entire first round -- bracket voting against the upsets.

The contest does not work with vote totals this low.

Part of the problem was the poor idea for a contest, poor alignment of the battles, not allowing more interesting entries, etc. But if the traffic on the site doesn't go back up then the contest is definitely dead.

Okay, srly...Trainers beating Fighters was not unexpected at all. Almost 40% of Gurus had that in their bracket, and after Rounds 1 and 2 it was VERY OBVIOUS that it would happen. Charizard was enough indication before the contest even started.
Many people have them beating Samus in their bracket, including myself.

100 votes cut in 1 hour. Vote swing probably won't last, but it's making it somewhat interesting.

The Bosses have gained back 60 votes in half and hour. It's partially to do with the North American night vote, but it's also because the first few hours were filled with people bracket voting, who were scared of an upset.
The comeback is very unlikely, but they could still make it fun.
