I think the theory makes sense when you get later in the contest. Early on, saying "The more popular rivalry wins." Well, thanks Captain Obvious. The problem is figuring how which is more popular.

All we have to go off of is how popular the individual characters are.. and that makes sense, doesn't it?

No way you're going to use subjective arguments to justify a pick.

but like I've mentioned before, this format kinda encourages voters to think about the games, and KH absolutely tools DMC in that regard.

I think most people would take Sora over Ryu without much thought, and Dante lost to Ryu + Riku is stronger than Vergil, so yeah.

I guess it depends on how much you think Ryu would get on Bowser today, but I would definitely have thoughts about it.

And, being fair, I'd take Peach > Wrighto, which makes me feel pretty justified in taking Breen. Even if it were Peach Vs Daisy, I'd take it over Wright/Edgey.

I'm not sure why that would make you feel justified... I don't see any sort of correlation here unless you're just looking at it as Gordon vs Phoenix.

Keep in mind most voters probably won't take in the "oh man this rivalry is better than the other" factor. Still character preference to a large degree.

It's not about thinking which rivalry is better; at least in my case. It's more about being reminded of DKC to make DK stronger.

I guess it's just another way to say "It's a more iconic rivarly."

One thing I've been thinking about in the DK match is if King K. Rool will bring in some of Donkey Kong Country's strength.

I dunno how to explain it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, will DK get votes he wouldn't otherwise get if you remind voters of DKC as opposed to just voting DK?

I don't think Pokemon Red/Blue will be all that strong. Stronger than what we've seen from Red alone, yes, but they're still Pokemon humans.

Ryu/Ken's rivarly is honestly as big as Red/Blue. They just dominate different eras. I'll simply go with the stronger characters when all else is the same.

And why are people bringing up "Common sense?" This is not "Is GameFAQs smart enough to choose the better rivalry?" When I consider Link/Ganondorf the most likely winner, it isn't because I think voters are drones (doesn't it sound a little arrogant to make an argument along the lines of "Because <x> is the actual better option"?). I simply think there are more Zelda fans than Final Fantasy fans and the people who like both aren't likely to favor Cloud/Sephiroth at a majority rate enough to close the increasing gap between the series.

No way I'm putting personal preference in this.

The thing with relationship is that Link/Ganon isn't that bad. In fact it's not even bad.

Agreed. I think as long as people see it as a legitimate rivalry and not necessarily a "better one" than Cloud/Sephiroth, I don't see them standing much of a chance.

I don't see Mario/Bowser having a chance either. That's just putting way too much faith in the relationship.

I think the biggest question this contest will obviously have is how important "relationship" will be to voters and it certainly shouldn't be based on intelligence. I think this contest will likely have a "Series" sort of feeling.

The way I see it, if <x> is your favorite character or preferred character over the other one in a poll, you'll likely like their relationship better as well.

As for the Link/Ganondorf vs Cloud/Sephiroth debate..

...I'm still sticking wtih Link/Ganondorf. If we're talking about finlas when the typical user is sick of FF7, and it comes down to Nintendo vs Square (FF7 has been declining for a long time now), I'm going to trust Link to be that near dominant on this site.

I tried to think like some of you guys when it came to Zelda vs FF in the series contest, and while it was close in 2006, It definitely wouldn't be close today.

While it would be closer than a direct Link/Cloud match-up, I don't think there are enough people that will actually answer the question the way you guys think they will; it doesn't mean they're drones of course.. I just think there are that many Zelda fans on the site.
