"overblown severity" eh, if it helps get people out of harm's way, I don't mind one bit. Up here, most of the concern is for damage, flooding, loss of power. NYC coverage has been a bit over the top but again, if it helps people stay safe, that's fine.

x-c in Texas is like football in Texas. Well, not in regards to cultural importance, but in terms of competitiveness and skill level compared to other states, it definitely was. Making varsity on my team required around a 4:30 mile time, the fastest runners were around 4:15 to 4:20, and in my four years we placed 7th, 4th, 7th and 7th at State. I was one of the slowest kids on the team with my 5:30 =P

the two guys I mentioned were sub-4s though that's not really x-c

I disagree, Konerko is more of a catalyst to his team and more important to their success than Bautista is to his team. Many of each team's offensive stats are similar except slugging and run production. Konerko and Bautista each have similar individual stats as well, so that's shows you whose club not only has players that hit for more XBH but also have better situational hitting in run-producing opportunities. When Konerko is in a bit of a slump, the White Sox definitely feel it a lot more than the Blue Jays if the same happens to Bautista

I wouldn't really say they have similar stats though, Bautista is so far ahead of everyone. 50 points higher OBP, 100 points higher slugging... it's really no comparison. And that's with Konerko having an amazing year.

Why Java, because it's not difficult and it's useful. It's easy to create enjoyable little applets to learn the premise of object oriented programming while still learning some basic programming things like operators and statements and loops and data structures. I haven't compiled Java in a while but I remember it being a little more strict about what it lets you compile, compared to C++ and especially C.

And if you becom a competent Java programmer, it really is NOT hard to learn other languages. hey in C, you have to handle memory allocation and deallocation. you can write to low level graphics memory. if you're talking from one platform to another, you'll have to handle stuff the Java Virtual Machine did for you. it's not hard, it's just more stuff to learn and be good at.
