Try an anti-rootkit scan like tdsskiller. I took a class on this sort of stuff, but after I decided to not pursue this sort of thing for a career, I emptied my brain of most of the knowledge I gained in the class. Anyway, maybe that will help.

Suikoden, absolutely.

The first 3 and the 5th are good enough to outweigh the mediocrity that is IV and the sin that is Tierkreis. I can't comment on the latest PSP game, but I don't hear good things about it.

Final Fantasy could be a contender, but it's really too hit or miss to be a top contender. For better or worse, Final Fantasy tends to hit the extreme ends of the scale for me.

I love me some Lunar, too, but with only 2 real games in the series and with the latest remake of Silver Star leaving me feeling like I just ate a thing of cotton candy sprinkled with sand, I can't rank it higher.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/06/21/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-nickelodeon-trailer/

I was skeptical when I heard about it, especially when I saw the first teaser trailer that replaced Donatello's and Michaelangelo's weapons with retractable bladed versions -- no reason for that. I don't know if they struck the idea completely, but they aren't in this new trailer. If they do stick with the weapons, I'll give them a chance.

The show looks like it's going to be pretty cool, though. I was actually really surprised to see the video on youtube had more dislikes than likes, but I can't help but think that's because of nostalgia. The Turtles are pretty much sacred to me, too, but there's more to them than just the '80s cartoon.

I've got to say, though, I'm not really a fan of Fedor. I think most of that stems from his personality, which is an odd thing to say because he is certainly very respectful of all of his opponents. The only problem with that was that he was pretty much just emotionless, which made for a boring guy. Thankfully, he wasn't a boring fighter.

I can appreciate what he was able to do and he certainly was beating the top competition in the world for the time, but the sport has evolved since then and he didn't evolve with it. I think that if you look at all those other Pride guys he fought who transitioned to UFC or had still been around for a while after Pride went under, they didn't seem to have evolved with the sport either, especially Crop Cop and Big Nog. To compare guys that haven't gotten much better with the rest of the division is fair, but it's hard to argue he's the best of all time if he hasn't improved while the new competition has.

I don't think Fedor really got any worse, but his competition got better, though his loss to Antonio Silva, the slowest man on the planet boggles my mind. Honestly, I think Fedor would be able to hold his own in UFC even now, but I don't think it would be very likely that he'd wrest the belt from JDS. It's too bad he never shed all those extra lbs and moved to LHW. He'd certainly be a pretty dominant force there. I guess when you're considered the best HW in the world until a sudden 3-fight losing streak, dropping to 205 and making a run for the title only seems second best.

This is only true for bad F2P though. Also, saying 'I'd prefer to pay ten bucks once for a CCG' is...like, let's put it this way. You're aware that they're money pits. You're aware that they subsist based on making you buy packs. Why on earth would you even begin to consider a flat, buy-once-free-forever fee to be good enough to keep the company making the CCG in business? It'd be like putting a gun to your mouth and pulling the trigger.

Fantasy Flight Games came out with an LCG model that has been revamped over the past few years in which the gameplay is identical to that of a CCG, but the packs for each set all have identical cards so you don't have to waste so much money on it. It's not exactly the same as my idea since mine is even better for the consumer, but it makes sense because it is a Living Card Game. The game grows with time as new expansions are released.

Shadow Era could give you access to the first set for a flat rate and then you can purchase additional expansions as they're released for additional fees. This isn't a microtransaction. It's just an expansion, like DLC. It will still make them good money, just from more people, rather than them getting them a ton of money from the small percent they suckered into getting hooked on the game.

Besides, it's not really any different than buying any other game that you only buy once. The company still stays in business even though you only bought them game once. Well, who knows if Capcom would?

Games that let you directly buy power are bad, but when it just accelerates the ability to get something you could otherwise get with time playing? Or is purely cosmetic? People pay for that kind of stuff, and it is no surprise that companies are slowly realizing this and adapting their pricing.

Of course companies will capitalize on whomever they can. That's how they work. No surprise there. It's unfortunate that people are allowing them to be preyed on like that.

I don't play any MMOs and most of the free-to-play games I can point to, or at least those games that make the largest use of microtransactions, are apps for phones or tablets. To me, the most user friendly free games are those not with microtransactions, but with ads. If I want to support the game and get rid of the ads, I can buy the game. To me, that works, but I cannot play games with microtransactions.

There's a CCG for android called Shadow Era that is free-to-play. You don't have to buy new packs, but it greatly accelerates your ability to earn new cards. The problem with it is that it takes so long to earn packs without buying them that it's not feasible. It feels like you're just playing a demo unless you spend real money. I understand it is a CCG and like all other CCGs, it's a money pit. But the only thing steering me to this CCG as opposed to another is that it's free. If I'm going to spend money on one, it's going to be a better one (though Shadow Era is actually pretty decent). I wouldn't mind paying a flat fee just to play it, though, even 10 bucks, which is a lot for an app, if you ask me.

I guess the whole point of this point is that the free-to-play model that allows you to get the full experience just at an extremely slower rate is still pretty bad to the point that it's more of a demo and not all that free-to-play anymore.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/microtransactions-will-be-in-every-game-says-ea-6383445

"I think, ultimately, those microtransactions will be in every game, but the game itself or the access to the game will be free," he said. "I think there's an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let's call it the client, to use the term, [is free]. It is no different than…it's free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall. They don't charge me to walk in there. I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it."

This is coming from EA, apparently one of the most disliked companies out there, so I don't know how much stock can be put into this as far as non-EA games are concerned, but the comparison to shopping at a store boggles my mind. It's clearly just an awful justification for something they know is a horrible trend. The reason The Gap allows you to shop for free is so you buy their stuff. I don't buy a pair of pants from The Gap and then decide later that it would be nice to have pockets in them and a zipper. Why should I do it with my video games?

If the comparison to The Gap is what EA is going for, then they probably won't be giving much to play in their "free" games as far as actual gameplay. You can technically play the game (browse the menu), but if you want to participate in the fun part, you have to buy the pockets and the zipper too. If they do that, then they have to give their games away for free. Too bad the problem with free games that rely on microtransactions is that everything you pay for is limited so you have to keep forking out the cash to get the full experience. One and done, that's the way it should be!

Dreaded microtransactions...

I completely don't understand it, which is really weird because I sunk a good 120+ hours into it.

Another strange thing is that I borrowed Oblivion from a friend sometime before Skyrim was even announced and I played it for about 50 hours without even doing any of the main quest.

Perhaps the strangest thing of all is that I handed Oblivion back to my friend because I got bored of it, so what possessed me to not only buy Skyrim on release day, but to play it for so long? Surely, I'm not the only one who is bewildered by its popularity.

After playing it for so long, I'd have say the game's really just not that good. So much is lacking and so much is repetitive, yet I kept at it and in the end, it wasn't a very satisfying experience.

Is it the sense of growth, becoming more powerful that is appealing about this game? How did I let it consume so much of my life for 2ish months? I just wish I could figure it out.

What gives, man?

I haven't really been following E3 this year. How would new systems make things better?

I think what he's saying is that there is no way the game will run on current gen consoles. They demoed it using a "high-end PC"

I don't want the current gen to end, but eventually the market will be saturated and MS/Sony will need to move on. I can't realistically see 2014 end without both of the new consoles being released

I appreciate high-end PC quality as much as the next guy and certainly look forward to seeing amazing real-time graphics like in that FF tech demo, but current gen games are still high enough quality for me. I'm not blown away by any graphics of this gen and, honestly, I never was -- I was always a little disappointed, expecting more with the emergence of HD.

Ultimately, graphics don't make a game (or at least most games) so if the gameplay isn't there, a new system won't really help anything except to make a cruddy game look less cruddy.

Fortunately, the new consoles probably won't be worth having for a couple years after launch anyway. At least we can be sure Sony's won't since that's just how they roll.

But for now, it just seems too soon, especially if backwards-compatibility is being shirked, which sucks because I don't think I can even plug another thing into my TV without it setting on fire.

I sure don't. What we've got now is still in its prime. There's no reason to jump the gun and release a new system now. Wait a few more years and the technology will be even better for the next-gen. I think even 5 years would be perfectly reasonable.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

I really don't like that game. Every other Mario game I've played, I've enjoyed, though SMG also to a lesser extent than the others. There are just too few things about it that don't bug me. Everything from the music, sound effects, power-ups, bad Yoshi controls, to the aggravating gimmick levels and overall level design. It just puts me in a bad mood.

Also... I feel obligated to say Suikoden IV since it's my favorite series, but I still find the game enjoyable enough in its own right.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

I don't know if this one is fair to call out since I have a difficult time really believing it's a Castlevania game for all the reasons everybody already knows. I should have known I wasn't going to like this game since I don't care for the style of gameplay, but I gave it a chance anyway. What madness drove me to play it through to completion, I may never know.

I'm surprised by the mention of Paper Mario. I really like that game. Actually, I tend to tout it as the best game on Wii and one of the very few Wii games worth owning.

Then they're probably going to be abysmal failures, too. It's the end of gaming as we know it!

I've become quite bitter toward Nintendo. I don't know if I changed more or if they did, but I just don't like most of what they do nowadays.

Clearly, I'm not indicative of all people interested in video games and I'm certainly no longer Nintendo's primary market. I, at least, wasn't during their Wii era. With a name like Wii U and confirmation that it will use the Wii's controller (and, additionally, a tablet), Nintendo is fully embracing its current branding, which will do little to recapture lost fans, like myself.

Plus, Nintendo just posted a pretty huge loss. Their first one ever, I believe. I'm not pretending to be a marketing genius (though someone at Nintendo at least was for being able to take Wii as far as they have), but that tells me they need to do something drastic to rekindle interest in their products.

Sure, we know very little about Wii U (including whether or not that will be its official name), but I was more interested in it when I only heard Nintendo was working on another system. Speculation (and hope) was more exciting than actual information, despite how little there even was. Everything so far has just been disappointing.

Of course some people are, but not many in respect to the launch of other major consoles.

I've been in the market for a tablet lately and I'm pretty sure I know which one I want, but I'm not sure if I should wait a few months for an even better one. Tough decisions are in my future.

As far as phones go, I only use mine to text if I can help it and I don't have a cool one so I'm not really all that familiar with apps and all that jazz. But that's not what my question is about!

Just for reference, here's what I'm looking at:
http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-TF300-T-B1-BL-10-1-Inch-Tablet/dp/B007P4YAPK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336099247&sr=8-1

Supposedly, there's a higher-end model coming in June or so with a quad-core 1.6ghz Tegra 3 processor and 1920x1200 display with a few other minor selling points for me.

The 1920x1200 display sounds pretty sweet. The best I have right now is 1280x800 on my laptop (same as the other tablet I can get now).

THE QUESTION:
If I am watching a dvd I ripped on a 1920x1200 display, will it look worse full screen than it will on a 1280x800 display?

I'm ripping movies now and I don't want them to look like garbage because the resolution is too high. I don't know if that's how it works.

Higher resolution sounds better and it would surely look better for streaming Netflix. I just saw that the Asus TF300 is 20 bucks off right now on Amazon and that's prompting me to be a bit hasty.

In my expert hipster opinion, FFVII is a fantastic game. I played it when it came out and loved it. I played it last year and loved it.

I'm playing FFVIII (I know that says 8 and not 7, but I decided to go on a tangent just for funsies) now for the first time again (for the 4th time) and am finally beginning to love it (wasn't clicking with me the second and consecutive times until now, but it did the first time. Too bad I only rented it then and then it fell off the map for me somehow. Hooray for digressions, by the way! [Yeah, I was, and am, being way too parenthetical.]).

Anyway... OoT didn't interest me at all when it came out and I can't really say why. I tried it very briefly a year or two after it came out and I did not like it. I just didn't think it was fun and I thought the graphics were not good even back then. Fast forward about 4 years. I finally decided to play it for more than 20 minutes. It was fun! The graphics didn't matter anymore since they were dated so I didn't have to try to enjoy it as cutting edge. I guess that mattered somehow.

I still don't think OoT is an exceptional game, but it is quite good.

^Haha, yeah, I noticed that one too and it's the only one I mentioned when telling my buddy at work about it.

I don't know what the deal is, but that's pretty weird.

If you really want to go crazy, try beating this guy who I played a game against the other day. I couldn't believe it when I checked his trophies.

Of course not. Honey is the exact opposite of a lubricant.

I don't really understand why this got ported to PC. The extra content is cool and I really doubt they'd not release it for the consoles, too. They probably just need to keep it PC exclusive for a while so it can sell.

But figuring it already came out on the two main consoles (for this type of game), do you guys really think this will sell particularly well? I wouldn't have thought a game like this would really do much for a lot of PC gamers that don't also own consoles.

As long as you play Suikoden III, it was worth it. If you spent money on the rest of the collection, I hope you feel good about whatever you spent.

Acme All-Stars was actually really good. You can score over 100 points in soccer in that game if you know the sweet spot!
