Space Invaders either introduced or popularized crucial aspects in games' DNA such as lives, game overs by deaths instead of a timer, high scores, progression, increasing difficulty. If you think Super Mario Bros. and DOOM creators are vital in gaming's history (they are), well, they started with Space Invaders.
