Unlikely, as it would have been impossible to get measles under control in the 1960s if that had been the case.

Remainder:

Texas, the hardest-hit state with the first US reported death in a decade, reported 198 cases on Friday, 39 more than its last update on March 4.

The CDCs data lags behind each individual states count and only includes confirmed cases reported the Thursday before data is released, so does not include the most recent Texas cases. Only three months into 2025, the total US case number is approaching last years total of 285.

On Thursday, an unvaccinated, deceased adult tested positive for measles in Lea County, New Mexico. If that death was caused by measles, it would be the first such fatality in the state in 40 years and the second US death this year. New Mexico has reported 10 cases in a county neighboring the Texass epicenter, including one linked to the deceased person.

Measles is a highly contagious disease up to 90% of the people around a positive case who are not immune will become infected, according to the CDC. Texas has been the epicenter of the outbreak, and health officials there have said it is probably larger than whats already reported.

I dont think its over. Its a huge population out there, said Philip Huang, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services. Theres some question about how many people are actually getting tested, too, and are we always getting the full picture of whats going on?

Tracking an Outbreak

A team of CDC experts is now in Texas after the Department of State Health Services requested federal help for tracking the outbreak on Feb. 28. Three CDC physicians with experience in infectious disease and four epidemiologists are split across the West Texas region where the outbreak is located, a spokesperson for the states health department said in an email.

The whole team is from the CDCs viral vaccine preventable disease branch in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. So far, the CDC has provided 2,000 vaccines to the state, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The state has also brought on an extra 36 contractors to help with vaccination efforts and specimen collection.

Nearly one in five children are unvaccinated in the epicenter of Gaines County, Texas. The MMR vaccine is 93% effective in preventing infection after one dose and the best way to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease, public health officials say.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently touted unconventional remedies, like vitamin A, in a Fox News interview, which concerned local health officials.

We really cannot distract from or dilute the primary message that vaccination is the key to addressing this, Dallas Countys Huang said.

US measles cases jumped by a third over the past week, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, a worrying sign in the outbreak thats already linked to two deaths.

New Mexicos health department listed Friday that an adult who had died and then tested positive for measles had succumbed to the disease, though the states medical examiner has yet to confirm the cause of death. If it was caused by measles, it would be New Mexicos first such fatality in at least 40 years, according to the CDC.

Hamas brushes off Trumps threat and says it will only free hostages in return for a lasting truce

https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-ceasefire-hostages-03-06-2025-afaffda54c9a64c40f9ae45244f90e38

CAIRO (AP) Hamas on Thursday brushed off President Donald Trumps latest threat and reiterated that it will only free the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The militant group accused Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of trying to back out of the ceasefire agreement they reached in January. The agreement calls for negotiations over a second phase in which the hostages would be released in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners, a permanent ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua said the best path to free the remaining Israeli hostages is through negotiations on that phase, which were supposed to begin in early February. Only limited preparatory talks have been held so far.

On Wednesday, Trump issued what he said was a last warning to Hamas after meeting with eight former hostages. The White House meanwhile confirmed it had held unprecedented direct talks with the militant group, which Israel and Western countries view as a terrorist organization.

Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!

Both Israel and Hamas have a longstanding practice of holding onto the remains of their adversaries in order to trade them in hostage-prisoner deals.

U.S. plan for the second phase

Hamas is believed to still have 24 living hostages taken in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war, including Israeli-American Edan Alexander. It is also holding the bodies of 34 others who were either killed in the initial attack or in captivity, as well as the remains of a soldier killed in the 2014 war.

Hamas released 25 Israeli hostages and the bodies of eight more in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in the first 42-day phase of the ceasefire, which ended on Saturday.

Israel supports what it says is a new U.S. plan for the second phase in which Hamas would release half the remaining hostages immediately and the rest when a permanent ceasefire is negotiated. Hamas has rejected the proposal and says it is sticking with the agreement signed in January.

Israel has cut off the delivery of food, fuel, medicine and other supplies to Gazas roughly 2 million Palestinians in an attempt to pressure Hamas into accepting the new arrangement. It has threatened additional consequences if Hamas does not resume the release of hostages.

It is unclear if the U.S.-Hamas talks made any progress. The Trump administration has pledged full support for Israels main war goals of returning all the hostages and eradicating Hamas, which may be incompatible.

Direct talks between the U.S. and Hamas could make it difficult for Israel to resume the war, according to Mkhaimar Abusada, a political science professor at Gazas Al-Azhar University who is currently in Egypt. The current U.S. administration is trying to avoid a return to war in Gaza in all possible ways, he said.

Gaza reconstruction plan

Egypt said Thursday it will host an international conference to raise money for a Gaza reconstruction plan proposed this week at the Arab Summit in Cairo. A date was not announced.

The conference, in cooperation with the United Nations, would secure financial pledges for the $53 billion five-year plan, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf said.

Egyptian and Arab officials also will tour key capitals, including Washington, to promote further details, Khallaf said, adding that Egypt believes its a workable and realistic plan in the interest of all partners.

Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and took a total of 251 people hostage. Most have been released in ceasefire agreements or other arrangements. Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages and recovered the bodies of dozens more.

Israels military offensive has killed over 48,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gazas Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were militants. Israel says it has killed over 17,000 fighters, without providing evidence.

The offensive destroyed vast areas in Gaza and displaced most of its population. Hundreds of thousands of people are living in tents, schools-turned-shelters or war-damaged buildings, and the population relies on international aid.

UN chief says aid cuts are a perfect storm

The United Nations humanitarian chief issued a dire warning Thursday about how U.S. funding cuts to foreign aid have issued a body blow to our work to save lives.

Tom Fletcher briefed the U.N. Security Council on the various challenges humanitarian workers face on the ground in Yemen and other areas around the world.

It is of course for individual countries to decide how to spend their money. But it is the pace at which so much vital work has been shut down that adds to the perfect storm that we face, Fletcher said, adding that he has asked partners to provide lists of areas where they have to cut back.

Hell, a "Scooby-Doo meets the Marvels" movie would have been more enjoyable... as, at least, the hijinks would have been expected.

They're Made out of Meat

"They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"Meat. They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"There's no doubt about it. We picked several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, probed them all the way through. They're completely meat."

"That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars."

"They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from them. The signals come from machines."

"So who made the machines? That's who we want to contact."

"They made the machines. That's what I'm trying to tell you. Meat made the machines."

"That's ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You're asking me to believe in sentient meat."

"I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. These creatures are the only sentient race in the sector and they're made out of meat."

"Maybe they're like the Orfolei. You know, a carbon-based intelligence that goes through a meat stage."

"Nope. They're born meat and they die meat. We studied them for several of their life spans, which didn't take too long. Do you have any idea the life span of meat?"

"Spare me. Okay, maybe they're only part meat. You know, like the Weddilei. A meat head with an electron plasma brain inside."

"Nope. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads like the Weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They're meat all the way through."

"No brain?"

"Oh, there is a brain all right. It's just that the brain is made out of meat!"

"So... what does the thinking?"

"You're not understanding, are you? The brain does the thinking. The meat."

"Thinking meat! You're asking me to believe in thinking meat!"

"Yes, thinking meat! Conscious meat! Loving meat. Dreaming meat. The meat is the whole deal! Are you getting the picture?"

"Omigod. You're serious then. They're made out of meat."

"Finally, Yes. They are indeed made out meat. And they've been trying to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years."

"So what does the meat have in mind."

"First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the universe, contact other sentients, swap ideas and information. The usual."

"We're supposed to talk to meat?"

"That's the idea. That's the message they're sending out by radio. 'Hello. Anyone out there? Anyone home?' That sort of thing."

"They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?"

"Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat."

"I thought you just told me they used radio."

"They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You know how when you slap or flap meat it makes a noise? They talk by flapping their meat at each other. They can even sing by squirting air through their meat."

"Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much. So what do you advise?"

"Officially or unofficially?"

"Both."

"Officially, we are required to contact, welcome, and log in any and all sentient races or multibeings in the quadrant, without prejudice, fear, or favor. Unofficially, I advise that we erase the records and forget the whole thing."

"I was hoping you would say that."

"It seems harsh, but there is a limit. Do we really want to make contact with meat?"

"I agree one hundred percent. What's there to say?" `Hello, meat. How's it going?' But will this work? How many planets are we dealing with here?"

"Just one. They can travel to other planets in special meat containers, but they can't live on them. And being meat, they only travel through C space. Which limits them to the speed of light and makes the possibility of their ever making contact pretty slim. Infinitesimal, in fact."

"So we just pretend there's no one home in the universe."

"That's it."

"Cruel. But you said it yourself, who wants to meet meat? And the ones who have been aboard our vessels, the ones you have probed? You're sure they won't remember?"

"They'll be considered crackpots if they do. We went into their heads and smoothed out their meat so that we're just a dream to them."

"A dream to meat! How strangely appropriate, that we should be meat's dream."

"And we can marked this sector unoccupied."

"Good. Agreed, officially and unofficially. Case closed. Any others? Anyone interesting on that side of the galaxy?"

"Yes, a rather shy but sweet hydrogen core cluster intelligence in a class nine star in G445 zone. Was in contact two galactic rotation ago, wants to be friendly again."

"They always come around."

"And why not? Imagine how unbearably, how unutterably cold the universe would be if one were all alone."

Whelp, the euro-dollar exchange rate went from 1 = $1.03... to 1 = $1.08.

In just one day, due to the tariffs. That's around a 4% drop in value in the span of a single day.

---

Even if the economy doesn't slow and there were no added costs to anything imported... that loss in value means that items like electronics are now 4% more expensive.

So that $800 cellphone now becomes $832.

Couple in the 25% tariffs... and that $800 cellphone becomes:

800+200 (tariff cost)+32 (loss in the purchasing power of the dollar)=
$1032 for the exact same phone.

Now figure that for a $35,000 car.

35,000+8,750+1,750=
$45,500 for the exact same car.

Are those Chinese EVs any good? I'm thinking I should buy an electric vehicle eventually.

Their SUVs seem pretty luxurious, but I can't say how fun they are to drive (or how safe they are), as I was just a passenger. Their bottom-tier car models, though, are pretty cheap feeling.

Note: This is talking exclusively about BYD.

It'll be interesting to see where (geographically) the jobs cuts come from.

The dirty little secret about VA health care is that it's supposed to be jointly funded by the federal government and the states. But GOP-controlled states don't contribute to VA health care (or do so at levels at insufficient levels).

So in a place like Maryland, the VA is very nice. Easy to enroll, wait times for appointments are minimal, etc.

But in Virginia, you are put on a waiting list to enroll. Wait times for appointments are insanely long, etc (and Virginia isn't exactly die-hard GOP). In places like Florida, people might die waiting for an appointment.

So if the cuts come from VA health care in red states, it's a bit like FAFO. But if the cuts are from blue states, then it's political... as they won't get much savings, due to the fact that not as many veterans live in blue states. Meaning the DOGE cuts are really about fucking with Democrats, not savings.

So I have a feeling that the bulk of these cuts are going to hit red states like Florida and Texas, as they have the highest numbers of veterans living in them. (both in totals and percentages)

The entire world is seeing that America is just inches away from letting Russia turn it into just as fascist a nation as itself, primarily because the majority of the nation has proven that they are just that sexist and racist, that while Mexico, Germany and more can deal with having a woman leader America has screamed at how sexist they are, and would burn everything to the ground before giving up male dominance.

And now they are burning everything to the ground and many are just laughing, saying that the natrual order being restored is all that matters.

On top of that Israel, the UK, and most of the world seems to be also giving up on caring about anything but tribal dominance.

The very idea of society seems to be just a marriage as many are saying all they care about is there privilege, that rules don't matter as we are seeing with the GOP.

How is anyone ever going to have faith in things like the law when we are seeing how so many are willing to throw away everything for just a bit more wealth?

The very idea of humanity being anything but monsters seems to be a joke at this point.

Congrats, you've rediscovered feudalism. And that Americans want it, badly.

What car? Almost everything is made here unless it's a Lexus or a Porsche/Lambo/LR.

The parts won't be though.

Mazda cars are made in Hiroshima.

Mazda SUVs are made in Mexico or Alabama.

I wonder how long it will be until the first American attempts to claim asylum in a different country

I also wonder how it will go, from a legal standpoint

Americans moving to European countries, in private expat get-togethers, already say this. That we're the first refugees before the storm.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree that all the "doomposting" are actually people who can see what's coming.

One may write off the "there won't be free and fair elections anymore" claim as doomposting, but...

There's a reason why I left. I saw that, after the 6 January insurrection, that half the voting electorate wanted to destroy the United States.

And I'm not young enough to fight anymore.

This actually used to be a common practice, back when it was seen as inevitable that every kid would get measles at some point. They figured it was better to just get it over with. But that was before we had a vaccine. Theres no reason to do it now unless youre an anti-vaxxer idiot.

Personal anecdote:
When I was a toddler, the chickenpox vaccine hadnt been approved yet. My babysitter knowingly exposed me to a kid with chickenpox. Without my mothers knowledge or consent. She thought she was doing us a favor by having me get it over with before I started school. Thats how common that mindset was.

My mother was pissed and never went back to that babysitter. And a year or two later, there was a vaccine. So I never even needed to catch it at all.

Make sure to get your shingles vaccine when you are old enough.

Having had the chicken pox, you are now susceptible to a shingles outbreak. (It's the same virus.)
