A handful of games when I built my first gaming PC in 2012, some of them being Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, and some other ones I forgot.

Most recently I bought Outriders on PC first and then again on Playstation when it was on sale but I did that so I could carry myself and also farm high end gear since it's a crossplay title

Yeah from Gamestop. I went for a release version in case you're eventually able to homebrew it. Didn't get the MK bundle, but if I get picked by Nintendo before my GS order processes I'll probably cancel it and get the bundle

Probably the last big fun purchase for a little while though

I think I'm still living them even though there's been a lot of ups and downs

As far back as I can remember - end of elementary: Had a lot of friends, was really close with family and family friends, involved in a lot of sports and was pretty popular academically among kids my age in my town

Middle school: Moved so this was probably the worst time. Nothing special really happened

High school: Great typical high school times. Was still doing sports (V basketball, JV/V football, V baseball, cross country), met some great people, great memories

Undergrad (Alabama): Fun times and great people, got adopted by some students from Japan my first year there who showed me the ropes, frat parties, Bama won the natty my senior year. Got on a plane for the first time to travel to Penn State for a conference. I was terrified when I left home but that changed within the first week I was at Bama so it broke me out of my shell

Grad school (Notre Dame): Felt like the first time I actually used my brain, met some people that I'm still good friends with today, learned a lot about myself since I was so far away from other family members in the south. Traveled outside the U.S. for the first time and then like 5 times more after that for conferences

Post grad school (the last 10 years): Moved to the DMV, exploring the area led to a ton of fun times pre-covid, things have been a lot slower now but it's nice experiencing the adult freedom most of the time. Met a ton of people including some people from CE, tried out a bunch of new stuff. Also took a personal vacation to India for a grad school friend's wedding. I think it's still all good as long as I have a job and my body doesn't start to ache because for now I just feel like an out of shape version of my grad school self

I only met him one time, but it was during one of the worst times of my life during the holidays and my family was going through a lot of things. He and his wife opened their home to us and we stayed in their basement for a few days while things blew over (I also caught the flu around the same time and was out of commission on a bed the entire time). My sister had known them for years though and still kept in touch.

I just wanted anybody to know that if that is him (they haven't officially identified the body yet but said they are ending the search) that he and his family are saints.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared Tuesday that he had begun to shutter a Pentagon program meant to advance womens participation in peace-building and conflict prevention, which was created by a law written by GOP lawmakers and signed by President Trump during his first term.

This morning, I proudly ENDED the Women, Peace & Security (WPS) program inside the [Defense Department], Hegseth wrote in a post on the social platform X.

He said the program was yet another woke divisive/social justice/Biden initiative that overburdens our commanders and troops distracting from our core task: WAR-FIGHTING.

Got a new car because I don't plan on selling it unless there is something that forces me to and I plan to have it easily over a decade, so depreciation wasn't a major factor. So right now I know everything about this car and there aren't any gotchas or vehicle damage that was covered up

If you change cars often or within common financing terms like 4-6 years then there's no point in new

TopicPC players, if you replace your GPU every 3-5 years do you buy the newest card?
MacadamianNut3
04/10/25 8:52:46 AM
#13
I've only done that the last 2 generations because I lucked out. I've had 5 cards in the last 13 years
2012: GTX 560 Ti for my first gaming PC
2013: GTX 680 as a Christmas present. Gave 560 Ti to a friend who killed it by having his PC plugged directly into a wall outlet during a thunderstorm
2020: RTX 2070 Super as part of a completely new build
2022: RTX 4090 from the military exchange for exactly MSRP (no tax or other fees). Put the 2070 Super in a new ITX build in my living room
2025: RTX 5090 from Nvidia's VPA program. Put the 4090 in the living room PC so now the 2070 is in a closet

If it weren't for the military exchange store and Nvidia's VPA program I'd probably still be on the 2070 Super, or optimistically a 4090 from a Best Buy drop since I wasn't gonna pay extra for the AIB models. 32 GB of VRAM vs 24 GB of VRAM is mostly useful for work and ML stuff, I didn't get the 5090 for gaming purposes.

I would suggest the 5070 Ti over the 4060 because game devs are getting lazy and 8->16 GB of VRAM can make a ton of difference and should keep you good for like 5 years. But that is like $800 for a GPU

I'm also an AMD fanboy now for CPUs so if I were building a mid-range ($1500-$2000 range) I'd go for the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. And 32 GB of RAM is like $120 at least for now

MacadamianNut3

My job will still definitely exist since it's research for the DoD to develop autonomous military robots that can communicate with people via natural language and America absolutely loves war. AI is still far too infantile to automate that away since people forget that all of this GPT stuff generates one word at a time based on previous words and doesn't understand the overall context of things (or context at all after a certain number of words). And that's just for text, it hasn't even gotten started on processing the real world other than using VLMs to understand snapshots.

The only question is if I personally will still have that job with doge fuckery
