It was a cult movie right up until the early 2000s goth fad, then it exploded.

I saw it as a kid only because I had a cool-ass babysitter who lent my family her VHS tape.

One of the reasons I checked out KH was because I saw Nightmare on the back of the box and immediately was confused and had what what hell this game was.

Don't misrepresent my point. I'm not saying it's not a thing. I'm saying I don't look at games with this confinement.

I don't see it as confinement, personally.
Even something open-ended as all fuck, like GURPs ... still has a "loop".

A game without any structure whatsoever, such as children playing pretend, still has a loop of a back and forth conversation between the children.

It's not confinement, but something liberating once you notice it.

I invite you to watch a bit of this. Not the whole thing, but the part starting about 11 minutes in.
https://youtu.be/VwZi58u1FjI?si=IPkxjwwaw4AfdLQZ

Regardless of the game's intention of leisure or edutainment, youre always constantly teaching the player _something_. Whether that be micro-economics or the correct timing to deflect an attack. How does one learn? Repetition.

Just as programming is math, game design is quite literally psychology.

Well, there are artistic merits to it as well (in a more literary storytelling sort of way), but game design is basically the art of manipulating the player to "feel things".

Game designers are taught to read people, and a playtest is almost like a lab experiment where the the player is studied.

None of this is new, it really is an "always has been" situation.

Going as far back as Monopoly. You know how every game ends in an argument? That was intentional. It's anti-capitalist satire. The game designer manipulated your family into fighting, just as planned.

A little surprised by this topics reaction, I'm so used to the gen-z/alpha perspective that virtually all age gaps are bad regardless of context or actual ages.

Honestly, I do lean into the "mind your own business" category, especially after like 25.

I still stand by that tinge of discomfort I initially expressed in my self-deleted post. Mostly because there still is a maturity gap, I just think back to when I was 26 and I felt like I knew how the world worked but I just didn't.

IDK, it's probably fine.

TopicCan you really talk about emulation today on this site?
RasterGraphic
10/26/25 11:19:04 PM

Emulation itself is broadly legal. If it wasn't then GoG would have been shut down eons ago.

The line you don't want to cross is facilitating piracy or potentially facilitating piracy by giving info that can be used for such. You could be dealing with your own legal backups, sure, but that doesn't change the fact that "backup" is often used as a euphemism for a homemade bootleg and the powers that be don't want the site being used as a resource for that kind of thing.

With modding, you probably need to make it clear about exactly what you're doing. If it's like, an RGB mod for your SNES ... I don't think anyone would give a shit, if you're talking about a kitted out Xbox, yeah that's bad, don't do that.

Modding is more of a gray area than you would think. In the US, a lot of it can break the DMCA so typically that means it would fall under "illegal" by the site's standards. Pedantic, sure, but that's how a lot of the mods think.

Legal emulation has never been a problem (Virtual Console, GoG, PlayStation Classics, Arcade compilations, etc).

Legal unofficial emuation that is unsanctioned is a gray area, probably best avoided. (Like running games off the CD without copying them).

Piracy has always been against the rules. I think you're allowed to say things like "I have a retropi box" but you can't really go into further detail.

I'm a little less resentful towards AI upscaling tbh, seems like one of the less harmful usecases for the technology.

That said, always keep your original assets and only use it as a last resort.

In the case of this book, they dun fucked up. They should have just used the pixel art from the games ... literally nobody would have batted an eye. It's an artbook for a 30+ year old arcade game.

that's just, what do you even expect from it?

Whatever the update entails, security, bugfixes, new features, etc.

Rai_Jin posted...
so the security is somewhat the same between the distributions because that's not the distribution's job?

There's not really a simple answer to this. Much of the security is up the specific packages and their maintainers, not all distributions use the same package versions. Some like to the stick to the most stable and battle tested versions, which means an update is less likely to break something, but arn't necessarily the newest version. Some other distros don't do this resulting in potential hiccups.

Both scenarios can lead to different kinds of headaches.

The piece to the puzzle that I'm not sure you're understanding is that Linux is a massive collaborative effort. A security hole isn't necessarily a distro's fault. It usually falls on the packages.

Rai_Jin posted...
it just updates automatically after some time when shutting down and finishing in short time that I usually don't even notice when starting up.

Then I guess updating Linux really is that much significantly faster because I definitely notice Windows auto updates and it makes me rage every time. The speed difference would probably blow your mind :/

Cartoon Network reran the original 60's series pretty heavily in the mid-late 90's. I think my little 5 year old sister was a big fan before the movies even came out. It was a hot minute after Pup, but I don't recall it being that dormant. Movie didn't feel like it came out of nowhere, CN would often do weird shit with old stuff they had the license for.

I think the most surprising thing was the actual tone, it could have easily been a bad John K spoof.

Oh shit, I forgot it had a sequel. I'm going to continue to forget, willingly.

Honestly, the yearly Scooby Doo movie trend should have ended after Alien Invasion (maybe cyber chase). Most of them just became Cartoon Network filler. Some of the series were pretty good though.

Although it's weird to think the success of what was probably the edgiest animated Scooby Doo media probably lead to the R/PG-13 Live action movie getting toned down.

Imagine how different the timeline would have been if it stayed a Swat Kats movie.
