Sure you'd definitely make a lot more money in the long run as a professional poker competing in all sorts of tournaments, but poker is so boring. It would be one of the most boring jobs ever sitting all day long playing hand after hand and counting cards. It just doesn't seem exciting at all, and I don't know how many hundreds of hours, maybe thousands, you have to sink in before you become a multi millionaire and can retire to live the rich lifestyle.

I think I'd rather be the top professional Esport StarCraft player, even if it means I might have to move to South Korea to compete for big money prizes. At least I'd find some enjoyment coming up with different ways of beating my opponent.

I wasn't even thinking about what it would take to become a millionaire playing cards, I just though of how long it would take for it to become more lucrative that just taking the $30k in one lump sum.

There's tournaments in Atlantic City pretty much every day where the buys ins are only $150 with prizes over $3K.

Shit, there's daily tournaments at the Golden Nugget with buy in for less than $100 with winnings starting at $2500.

I got lucky and got my foot in the door in tax/finance without a degree. Pretty much built my resume up enough that it was my college and have been slowly climbing the ladder position to position.

Kinda how I got the job before the one I currently have.

Was desperate for a job that had benefits, and got a job in the mailroom as basically a favor to a friend that already worked there.

Slowly worked my way into the Accounting Department, and was basically the lead of the AR Department by the time I left that job 11 years later.

my main reason for going vegan is to prevent unnecessary harm to innocent creatures. we don't need meat or animal products to enjoy tasty, healthy food, so i don't do it. you'll find that most vegans accept that some harm to animals is necessary and justified (testing drugs before doing it on humans, culling wild populations to save the herd, etc). we just don't believe that pleasing our taste buds is a good enough reason.

That's why I made it a point to say how his most recent standup wasn't good other than when he told the story about when he was almost attacked at Hollywood Bowl, becasue that was really the only part of the standup (other than the parts about his wife) where he was actually telling jokes. $5k a month is significantly more than I make now, and I now have freedom to do whatever I want without worrying about financials, so that's an easy choice for me.

Just keep in mind, in 10 years when inflation makes that $5k equate to below minimum wage and you have to go back to work, how youre going to explain the 10 year gap in your employment

We aren't forgetting that, we just don't think it's worth it as the skills being associated to it is being romanticized a bit. Skill plays a factor in poker but so does luck. Being able to read people in a specific game doesn't mean it will translate to unrelated professions. Even the lying thing, lying is not a top notch skill..... and the skill at lying in a specific subject doesnt mean you can take that to any profession. In fact, it's entirely useless in my career and many other careers.

Like this idea that you can take poker talents and the no money average joe can go easily become rich off that is not some surefire or easy thing. Regardless if you work hard. Employers generally aren't jumping at the chance to employ some rando who can play poker well who has no particular skills that pertain to the specific profession and whatever poker skills they do have do not automatically translate well to the job they are seeking applicants for.

You can literally make more than $30k in Atlantic City in a month, bouncing around from casino to casino, playing low-level $500 buy-in tournaments.

You don't even have to worry about bringing it into the "real life".

So, like I said, I think people were just blinded by the "$30k to do nothing" option and went with that.
