Most people on this board were literal children and teenagers when Bush was in office. The way the US handles activism and protest is not good and far from the democratic ideals it espouses, but it's not even comparable to being killed or forced into labor camps for dissent.

It's a false equivalence which distracts from the question of what oppressed people face in regimes like those ran by terrorists, whether the question was meant to or not.

The question was simply "Are citizens of a country ruled by terrorists blameless?"

Member of the Republican Party (Bush Jr. included) have repeatedly been called terrorists by people on CE.

Are they terrorists in the way you chose to define them? Obviously not.

Are they still terrorists? Debatable, but most would say yes.

I gave it a little more thought. I think I'd still take the 30k.

Sure you'd definitely make a lot more money in the long run as a professional poker competing in all sorts of tournaments, but poker is so boring. It would be one of the most boring jobs ever sitting all day long playing hand after hand and counting cards. It just doesn't seem exciting at all, and I don't know how many hundreds of hours, maybe thousands, you have to sink in before you become a multi millionaire and can retire to live the rich lifestyle.

I think I'd rather be the top professional Esport StarCraft player, even if it means I might have to move to South Korea to compete for big money prizes. At least I'd find some enjoyment coming up with different ways of beating my opponent.

I wasn't even thinking about what it would take to become a millionaire playing cards, I just though of how long it would take for it to become more lucrative that just taking the $30k in one lump sum.

There's tournaments in Atlantic City pretty much every day where the buys ins are only $150 with prizes over $3K.

Shit, there's daily tournaments at the Golden Nugget with buy in for less than $100 with winnings starting at $2500.

https://www.goldennugget.com/atlantic-city/casino/poker-room/tournaments/

There's a 100% chance with these skills you'd be the best player at those tables.

If done right, you can make a hundred grand in 2-3 months, just playing 3-4 times a week.

I just feel like a 6 month grind with a near guarantee to walk away with a few hundred grand is worth more than just being handed a check for $30 grand.

my main reason for going vegan is to prevent unnecessary harm to innocent creatures. we don't need meat or animal products to enjoy tasty, healthy food, so i don't do it. you'll find that most vegans accept that some harm to animals is necessary and justified (testing drugs before doing it on humans, culling wild populations to save the herd, etc). we just don't believe that pleasing our taste buds is a good enough reason.

This is actually a calm, rational take on this situation. Which is a rarity on here.

Man, you are really bad at this.

Your original comment was in response to someone calling out people that were OK with his racially motivated jokes, and your response was:

This may come as a complete shocker to you.

You might want to sit down.

Chappelle's Show was on 21 years ago.

People, and society, change a lot over two decades.

The way you said it with (how I interpreted it) insulting tones, made it sound like you were defending them.

If those weren't your intentions, then I apologized for misreading it.

Chappelle Show was 21 years ago, but people in here were commenting on how they STILL find it (along with his earlier stand-ups) funny. And your observation, that you have since doubled down on, was that "it was a different time". It's not a "different time" if they STILL find it funny.

The world changed, so if you still think the jokes from 2003 are still funny, doesn't that make it just as bad as thinking the 2024 jokes are funny?

it blows my mind that people still think this is some argument against going vegan. what do you think we feed animals before we turn them into food? on average, it takes 10 pounds of food to produce 1 pound of meat. for beef, this rises to 16 lbs. instead of dedicating the vast majority of our farmland to producing food for our future food, we could produce food for ourselves with a significantly fewer amount of resources.

Yeah, this isn't as much of an argument as it would be to figure out how to handle the instant change of producing billions of pounds of meat for consumption to producing billions of pounds of vegan food options, as the processes are vastly different.

Could a gradual move towards a world that is 100% vegan (at least food wise, because there are certain products, such as medicine, that require animal biproducts like gelatin) absolutely.

Could we make a "light switch" change to Veganism tomorrow? Absolutely not.

The spin now is that you're a racist if you don't find his trans jokes as funny as his old jokes, because apparently that's the only possible way you might think that.

Or maybe, just maybe, his trans jokes actually aren't that funny because they're borne from a place of hatred and ignorance, and his old jokes at least seemed to come from a place of experience.

"Seemed" is a good choice of words, becasue Chappelle is basically the Clarence from 8 Mile of black comedy.

Born to upper-middle class suburban parents, but talked about his experiences going through the "hood", so people assumed that was his upbringing.

As far as his trans "jokes". What really sucks is that his original jokes about the LGBTQ+ community actually had some humor attached to it. Look up his "Alphabet Car Ride" joke. It just plays on stereotypes on how the LGBTQ+ community treats each other, and was the preachy BS that his most recent two special were.

Possibly. That's why I made it a point to say how his most recent standup wasn't good other than when he told the story about when he was almost attacked at Hollywood Bowl, becasue that was really the only part of the standup (other than the parts about his wife) where he was actually telling jokes. We aren't forgetting that, we just don't think it's worth it as the skills being associated to it is being romanticized a bit. Skill plays a factor in poker but so does luck. Being able to read people in a specific game doesn't mean it will translate to unrelated professions. Even the lying thing, lying is not a top notch skill..... and the skill at lying in a specific subject doesnt mean you can take that to any profession. In fact, it's entirely useless in my career and many other careers.

Like this idea that you can take poker talents and the no money average joe can go easily become rich off that is not some surefire or easy thing. Regardless if you work hard. Employers generally aren't jumping at the chance to employ some rando who can play poker well who has no particular skills that pertain to the specific profession and whatever poker skills they do have do not automatically translate well to the job they are seeking applicants for.

You can literally make more than $30k in Atlantic City in a month, bouncing around from casino to casino, playing low-level $500 buy-in tournaments.

You don't even have to worry about bringing it into the "real life".

So, like I said, I think people were just blinded by the "$30k to do nothing" option and went with that.

You gotta laugh. That is the one thing at the end of your life you will not wish you did less of.
