All right, here's a real one:

I've never seen the Lord of the Rings movies, or a full Star Wars movie. I've only seen bits and pieces of a few Star Wars movies, and I just never got around to seeing LotR. I once tried to read the books but got burnt out from all the descriptions of scenery. But The Hobbit is one of my favorite books.
Sort of the same here. I think between all the bits and pieces Ive seen over the years Ive seen all of the original Star Wars movies and most of the Anakin trilogy, but not all at once and not in order. I also saw the first lord of the rings movie while in a car on vacation with my cousin watching on a portable dvd player but not the second or third movies.

as for my secret
when I was around 12-13 I would cry myself to sleep and curse god because I was a boy and not a girl.

I dont think piracy hurts games too much. As long as it stays at a low enough number. Stores also account for things like shoplifting. Its why places often put their logo and contact information on things they expect people will take like pens. If you cant stop it you might as well get some word of mouth out there. It doesnt help that a lot of games you cant even buy after it becomes a few years old. If I want to watch mash or Gillians island I can go out and get a dvd box set, if I want to read Dracula or Frankenstein I can go buy a copy. If I want to play mario paint, well Nintendo hasnt given me anyway to pay them for their product on the assumption that if they dont Ill buy one of the new Mario games instead. Which makes no sense. Just because there is a Jason takes manhattan doesnt mean I dont want to watch Friday the 13th.

that said I think piracy does impact some industries more than others.

I used chat rooms and irc a lot growing up. That feeling is pretty normal if all you are doing is the discord chat. A lot of people do things outside the main chat, they do art projects together, play games, watch movies, body double. Its like the work water cooler, you have something in common and something to talk about together, but only having work in common doesnt really make you friends. Just friendly. Im in a few servers where I feel the same, its kind of awkward to talk in and I feel like Im the person who showed up to chess club wanting to play chess and instead found people who only joined to meet the kind of people who like chess but only want to play occasionally. and other servers Im more active in where it feels like a normal friend group. Im still generally the quiet one but I still know these people, I still participate, I understand the inside jokes and whats being talked about. Where I can ask if someone wants to do something outside of discord and someone might be interested.

It's really just the athleticism that's missing, so using "eSports" to communicate the point of "sports, but electronic instead of athletic" makes sense.

To be fair skeet shooting is considered a sport and requires less athleticism than professional gaming. Professional gaming while typically done in a sitting position also involves reflexes and coordination. Reaction time tends to start declining around mid 20s so many professional gamers need to retire due to not being able to keep up with the physical performance of those younger than them.

While I dont watch them Id probably be more willing to watch them than regular sports. Basketball and soccer make a little sense as something is happening, but football and baseball will forever confuse me on how it has so many fans. 90 percent of it is just sitting around. People talk about oh but the strategy the athleticism! Gymnastics has better shows of athleticism and is more entertaining to watch. Any number of competitions have better strategy. I would rather watch a live Stratego tournament than a football match.

Good action anime is pretty much non existent for me. Give me political intrigue or slice of life stuff any day. Ascension of a bookworm was pretty good. A librarian gets reborn into a world where everything is still handwritten on parchment and needs to invent paper and the printing press to get her books back which causes disagreement with the merchant guild in charge of selling parchment.

365 days to the wedding was pretty cute too. A travel company wants to open a new location in Alaska but dont want to send whole families just a single person, so two people decide to fake an engagement to avoid being shipped off to a different country. Its romantic but not sexual.

if you did want to try something more shonen like the wrong way to use healing magic was interesting. The main character isnt the hero summoned from another land, hes just a guy who happened to fall into the portal with the hero. He doesnt get awesome powers or incredible stats or awesome weapons. He just has a basic heal spell, but a bat shit crazy general believes healing is the ultimate weapon because you train, heal the muscles instantly and train some more on repeat forever because you will keep getting stronger as you do it. I thought it was a cool twist anyway.

but cartoons are in a much better position than anime is these days.

when I was in high school my teachers would brag about how much homework they gave and say at least an hour per subject was normal, except we had anywhere between 5-10 classes a day, so its possible to have 10 hours of homework due the next day depending on your class schedule. I do not believe 10 hours of homework on top of 8 hours of school was productive to learning.

This topic is interesting because you get to see the kind of movies people find important

Yes, this is a very important film, but not a "fun" one. Be prepared to be really really sad. Definitely an outlier of Ghibli films.
to be fair Im not really sure how fun most of my list is. The wild robot and the iron giant are probably the most lighthearted of the bunch.

Persepolis - a coming of age story of a girl growing up in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution.

Funan - a woman searches for her son after they are separated in the khamer rouge revolution.

approved for adoption - the story of an orphan of the Korean War getting adopted by a western family and his struggles with growing up straddling the two cultures.

grave of the fireflies - a pair of siblings struggling to survive in the war ravaged Japan.

when the wind blows - an elderly English couple try to maintain a normal life in the aftermath of a nearby nuclear strike.

barefoot gen - a young Japanese boy tries his best to find a life in the aftermath of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Extremely graphic depictions of the bomb.

The day of the crows - a near feral boy raised by his tyrant of a father in a haunted forest must leave the forest to find help for his father and meats a girl named Manon.

the breadwinner - a young girl living under taliban rule must disguise herself as a boy in order to provide for her family after her fathers arrest.

the iron giant - a boy living in Cold War America finds a giant killer robot with no interest in killing.

Ethel and ernest - a biography of two normal people meeting, falling in love, getting married, and growing old together set in London from the 1920s to 1970s

the wild robot - a displaced robot tries to find its purpose on an uninhabited island as it finds there is more to it than what it was programmed.

Id love to check out the difference between American fast food and the same chains in other locations, but I think it would be a waste to mainly eat there. Not saying you should force yourself to try balut or dinuguan or something exotic but Im sure you could find some fried rice and egg or some grilled meat. If you find you hate the local flavors by all means return to the American style food, but it seems like it would be pretty restricting to go find the nearest McDonalds instead of just trying the local grilled chicken.

If I could run my own little shop without having to worry about things like pushing credit cards or other corporate mandates, drama between employees that should have gotten over that shit in high school, and barely getting paid enough to survive I think I would be quite happy with the position. Bonus that as the owner of the little shop I could refuse service to customers that were particularly assholish.

I wouldnt really call it decent. I live in bumfuck Wisconsin. Rent starts at about 1200 and thats for a slum. The decent apartments are closer to 1500 and the good ones are 2000+. Cars are a requirement because we barely have a bus system, so gas, insurance, maintenance, Utilities, food, healthcare, retirement, taxes, clothing, etc. you are basically pay check to pay check. Maybe able to put a bit away for emergency funds or savings or the occasional splurge item, it may not be as bad as on the coast but its still its closer to what minimum wage should be than a decent pay.

It's "Je ne parle pas franais." Parlez is second person plural, and you misspelled the last word.

It's "au", not "du".

It's "Tu es une tte de merde." For those who don't know, it means "You are a shithead." That's not really nice, but you risk being laughed at if you say it to someone. It'll backfire because it's not something we say in French. I recommend replacing "merde" with "con". Bear in mind that this insult works better in France. In Qubec, it's a rare insult that may not have the effect you intended, especially if you speak with a French accent. Let's just say French insults are funny in Qubec. We make fun of Frenchmen when we use them. It's not offensive, it's just a friendly rivalry. They do the same with us. It's kind of like an American saying "bloody hell" while sipping tea. It makes fun of the British without offending them.

I can't speak for the French, so I can't confirm or deny what you said. I can however tell you how it works in Qubec. Kindergarten (age 5-6) is when we learn our alphabet and numbers. First year (age 6-7) is when we learn to read and write. Second year (age 7-8) is when we learn cursive. Unless they changed the rules for newer generations, primary school (up to sixth year) students are expected to write in cursive in most exams. I don't believe it's mandatory in secondary school (five years, age 12 to 17), but I don't recall anyone not writing in cursive during exams.

Nothing stops parents from teaching preschool kids how to read or write early. It's rare for a toddler to be unable to write their own name at the very least. There are indeed books for toddlers, but they barely have any words in them. You may be referring to books parents are meant to read for their children. The age rating reflects the maturity of the target audience, not the actual reader.
Awesome! Thank you! Spelling kicks my ass even in English.

I wouldnt really expect books for toddlers to have too many words. I was more just surprised they exist at all and asked about them. Here is one of them
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/0/0ee12c8b.jpg
there are other ones and some are more for the parents than the kids, but when I saw them I decided to ask a French person about them. And was told 3-4 was where they had learned to recognize cursive and write some simple words or their names and 5-6 was where they learned to read and write it properly with it being a requirement from ages 6-16.

not sure how universal their experience is, but it lines up with the textbooks Im seeing and Im told that France has a national curriculum.

Tu es le tete du merde.

It's Je parle. Parlez is the conjugation for vous, which is the formal or plural "you". (Hence "Parlez-vous francais?" means "Do you speak French?")

It's been nearly 30 years since my 7 years worth of high school/college French classes, and I've forgotten most of what I learned in them, but some of the conjugations and vocab still stick with me.

Parler ("to speak") would be Je parle ("I speak"), Tu parles ("You speak"), Il/Elle parle ("He/she speaks"), nous parlons ("We speak"), vous parlez ("You speak"), ils/elles parlent ("They speak").

thanks! My conjugation needs some work. Im currently trying to get my hands on some ms(French preschool) or cp(french kindergarten) level work books, but while finding physical ones to import is easy, finding ebook versions is not and the last time I imported a book from France a $10 book cost me over $50 between shipping, import fees, conversion rates, etc. so Im trying to avoid physical.

fun fact I learned while looking though, the French learn and use cursive pretty much thei entire school career. According to a French person I spoke to ages 5-6 is a more normal time for them to be expected to learn and use it but there are books for 3-4 year olds as well.

my 14 year old nephew told me they spent about a week learning cursive in third grade and once they learned to write and read their name they were pretty much done with it.

Usagi from sailor moon or tenchi from tenchi muyo beat them both into dust. But out of the two Superman wins but goku has the better media. The best Superman stories are the ones that have little to nothing to do with fighting.
