That has always been common. People go upstairs and then are never heard from again. My favorite was when Married... with Children did this with the kid Seven but then later on they had his picture on a milk carton implying he was missing. Haha. That was great.Boy Meets World had a nice gag with this. The little sister dissapeared for multiple seasons. Then one day walked down the stairs (with a different actress) and basically said something along the lines of "Yea, that was the longest time I've ever been put in timeout."
