As someone who drinks and smokes a solid bit, just be careful not to get dependent on it. It def helps with stress and forgetting about how shitty everything feels rn, but it can very easily become a crutch if you're not careful, I've seen a lot of friends and coworkers go down some dark paths by going too hard on either/both.

That said, until this month I was smoking every night before bed and drinking almost as often. Gonna keep the drinking down permenantly I think, but oh man, the smoking and watching cheesy sci-fi movies definitely helps fend off the impending doom a good bit.

Heh, funny enough, my girlfriend saw Danganronpa on my PS5 while I was at work, started playing it on a whim, and is really liking it so far.

Never mentioned it to her cause I didn't think it would be her thing, but apparently I was wrong lol.

Metal is metal, I will say nu metal probably receives the most hate by a sub-genre bar none, being a metalhead who frequents a very high amount of shows on average across all

I got to go see Nonpoint for free years and years ago and the did so good most people left before the headliner came in after (drowning pool)
Oh man, I love Nonpoint, would love to go to one of their shows.

I loved the ending tbh. It felt very fitting for a series that always said "fuck your expectations, we'll do what we want".

And honestly, the whole series is based on lies anyways. If they wanted to they could easily retcon it.

Nu Metal is another one for me. I don't hide the fact that I like it (anymore) >_> , but I almost never recommend them. My friends that don't like metal wont like it, and most of my friends who do like metal don't either lol.

But fuck man, I just enjoy it a lot as a genre. SOAD, Mudvayne, Mushroomhead, Flaw, Sevendust, Fear Factory, Coal Chamber, 3rd Strike, Linkin Park, I enjoy their shit. Hell, can't even lie, Limp Bizkit is dumb but they have some fun dumb songs.

My goal is 1 or 2 on the weekend or in a social setting. No more having any sitting at home on a Tuesday or whatever.

I can obviously control it because Dry January is really easy. I just have to do it. I simply enjoy trying different beers too much.
I decided to cut back hard too; doing Dry January, and even after January's over I think I'm gonna reign it in permenantly. I'm in food service, and man, it's so easy to get into a habbit of drinking "just a little" every day. Realizing that I don't really WANT to drink every day, it just became routine. Probably won't go 100% sober, will probably drink wine occasionally with nice dinners and maybe drink some soju here and there, but daily shifties I think are in my past.

Not necessarily guilty pleasures per se, just stuff you're a big fan of but you don't recommend to everyone because of it being super niche, hard to get into at first, whatever.

For me, Danganronpa is probably the biggest one. Big fan, but it's definitely something I wouldn't recommend to everyone, only if I'm super confident someone would like it.

The Terrifier movies too, unless I already know someone's really into horror movies I'm probably not gonna suggest it just on a whim.

Out of the Akira Kurosawa movies I've seen, Seven Samurai was my least favorite. I much preferred Yojimbo and High & Low.
I loved Yojimbo, but IMO Seven Samurai is basically a perfect movie. For a movie to be 70 years old, 3 and half hours long, and still be so captivating with its story, characters, set design, etc.? Thats so impressive to me.

Honestly kind of a lot; hoping Im not taking on too much at once.

  • Improve my finances. I have very little in savings, and no investments or anything like that. Really want to change that this year as much as possible.
  • Get in better shape/eat better. Dont really desire becoming a gym guy really, did that in college and it wasnt really my thing, but I do need to get back into being more active outside of work, and stop eating like shit. Could stand to lose at least 15ish pounds, and I think it would help my back pain a lot too.
  • Cut back on alcohol and weed. Going fully sober for January. Not necessarily planning on going fully sober permanently, but this past year I think I was starting to go a little too hard on those things to cope with work stress, so Im looking for healthier, more sustainable ways to cope with stress.
  • Finally go to therapy. Wanted to for a long time, but I finally have decent insurance, so theres really no more excuses for me not to go.

Another year finished means its time for my personal annual tradition of ranking every movie I watched for the first time in the past year. It was a pretty busy year for me, so I unfortunately only saw 87 new-for-me films as opposed to my usual 120+. Surprisingly, I think this actually made it harder to rank. I really didnt watch very many outright bad movies this year. If I had time to watch something, it was usually a movie I was really excited to check out or had been wanting to watch for a while. So this year more than ever, just because a movie is lower on the list doesnt mean I didnt enjoy it. This list is extremely subjective and is solely based on my gut-level reaction to how much I enjoyed each movie and/or how much of an impact it had on me. So here it is, my ranking of every new-for-me film I watched in 2024, from least favorite to favorite:

I go every year, I love it. Tons of fun, and don't worry about not having a plan. Just wandering around and stumbling across fun random nerd shit is great, that's what I did my first year and I've been hooked ever since. It's definitely worth it.

As for the orgies, yes, it's a thing, but all of the con takes place in giant hotel conference rooms and such, that kind of stuff only happens in the top floors of the hotels where no actual Dragoncon stuff is happening. If you're not down for it, there's no way of getting sucked into it if it's not your cup of tea.
