The most likely outcome of this feels like Americans buying gas-powered vehicles instead

Absolutely, since none of the other countries have invested as much in electric vehicles. American car companies in particular have almost seemed to sabotage efforts by making them as expensive and unappealing as possible (like introducing paid DLC bullshit and tesla's whole thing).

Best case is probably if this forces China to build companies in countries like Mexico and then ship them to the US from Mexico in order to avoid the tariffs. This at least allows some of these manufacturing businesses to not be based in China
How does that improve anything? Regardless, I've heard that the US is thinking of ways to block China from going the Mexico route, though I'm not sure if that runs afoul of NAFTA (or whatever the fuck dumb trump renamed it).

The Dems are being very smug to many of their voters. You have Hillary telling people to get over it and they are uneducated. Yeah that drives people to the polls .
The democratic party is smug incarnate. If they lose then it's the voters' fault and democrats get to go "we told you so" when republicans do bad things, as if no one knew that republicans would do bad things. When democrats win, then it's "we must be doing something right, otherwise we wouldn't have won" as if people aren't just voting against republicans.

There's a significant difference between countries specializing in different things and a country cheating the system by using tax money to artificially deflate the cost of what they're producing until there's nobody else left on the planet that can afford to compete.

What you're talking about is two farmers growing different things and trading produce at the end of the harvest. What China is doing is more like one farmer growing the same produce as the second, but then selling them at half price until the other farmer shuts down and then turning around and charging whatever the hell he wants because there's nobody else growing what he grows.
Subsidies aren't cheating the system, it's called putting your resources towards your specializations. All governments subsidize their industries (yes, including the US). It's like you're complaining that farmer 1 is cheating by buying more tomato seeds and tomatoes happen to be in far more demand currently than the corn that farmer 2 put more money into. The US also subsidizes their auto industry, it's just that the US auto industry would rather spend that money on fatter executive bonuses and stock buybacks, and they'd rather focus on large-ass gas guzzlers and keeping prices high.

China is able to sell for cheaper because they've made major investments in batteries which make up a huge bulk of the cost of EVs. BYD in particular has a lot of vertical integration which means they don't have to pay extra for a whole bunch of suppliers.

"if you can't afford a house go fuck yourself" is not a winning strategy to sell vehicles
Houses aren't the only places where you can find electrical outlets.

CableZL posted...
People aren't going to want random people charging their EVs at their houses. There needs to be a lot of EV charging stations build around the country. Legislation has been passed to build about 500,000 charging stations, I believe, but we still need them to be built.
Sure, but there are plenty of homeowners who do most of their driving near their house for most of the year who haven't bought an EV. The charging stations will get built either way.

radical_rhino posted...
The actual reason for these tariffs, for those who care, is that we dont want to have critical manufacturing dependent on a current rival and potential future adversary. China is trying to destroy our manufacturing capabilities by subsidizing their own industries; its the same as when a large company lowers prices to destroy competition, then raises prices afterwards. Also, wed have less leverage to stop China from doing things like, say, invading Taiwan, if were dependent on them for keeping our infrastructure stable.
Our military manufacturing capabilities are not impacted by China selling cheap EVs.

s0nicfan posted...
For folks who aren't aware, the Chinese government is currently subsidizing their domestic EV market to bring the prices down to below the manufacturing cost. They're literally undercutting all the competition by having the government make their cars cheaper than it actually cost to make. The tariffs are to keep them from flooding the market and drowning out competition.
Is that not the selling point of globalism? Countries export what they're good at making so that they can trade for other goods they're not as proficient in making. It's not China's fault that US auto companies dragged their heels for so long on making EVs and are currently content with keeping prices ridiculously high. These tariffs will do nothing but let domestic auto companies stay complacent and continue price gouging.

This is the failure in the whole plan. Its not even about the economy, just the idea that a hedge fund or major financial institution is going to go bankrupt to buy shares, with money they likely dont have, at insane prices to comply with a contract is crazy. They will just not buy the shares and deal with a lawsuit and fines after the fact. Its much more rational and doesnt involve bankrupting the company.

Lets say I enter into a bunch of contracts that says I will buy millions of shares of GME on some random date. And I dont expect the price to be above $10 on that date.

If suddenly there are games being played in the market to make the price $400/share when the due date comes Im not going to spend 40x the amount to buy the shares, especially when I dont have the money. Im just going to breach the contract.
The legitimacy of the entire market is based on contracts being strictly enforced. If anyone can just skip out on obligations then it'll be a hit to the reputation of the market.

I said he was instrumental in causing the problem in the first place and that he was just providing a bandaid because he's just forgiving a tiny fraction of the almost $2 trillion problem which, again, he was instrumental in causing. Forgiving student loans isn't throwing money at the problem because it's the forgiving of debt which the government has already guaranteed (i.e. the money was already thrown at it, so his approach isn't changing anything there). He should be more comprehensive in what he forgives AND he should be putting a solution into place to stop the problem for new students.

So yeah, I said he didn't go far enough and I was never against student loan forgiveness. Please do not misrepresent what I have said.

In that case, you contributed to him losing by using unnecessarily inflammatory language to get your point across, when in the first place you would have better articulated your standpoint by challenging the entire stance that the US and all its presidents have held with regard to Israel since its inception. Pinning the blame specifically on Biden makes you the GOP's little bitch.
Young progressives aren't excited to vote for biden either way. You can't blame that lack of excitement on people calling out biden's support for genocide. Do you honestly think calling him a name damages his chances at re-election more than like a million other things? It's a non-factor.

The israeli government has a very polished message and you can see part of it here where they emphasize that they've got figures on how many hamas combatants they've killed (to show that as their primary mission, instead of wholesale genocide) and that they're taking great precaution on not harming civilians (part of the whole "world's most moral military" angle), but it absolutely crumbles if you go, "hey wait a minute, if you have numbers on hamas combatants killed and you're taking great precaution to not harm civilians, how come you don't have the number of civilians killed?" like piers did here. The thing is that the israeli government is not used to being under any scrutiny from any large platform, so normally they'd get away with the narrative.

No, if anything I try to eat maybe an hour or two before going to bed since it's hard to go to bed on an empty stomach. The key is to not stuff yourself and it also helps to avoid certain foods like ones that are overly acidic or sugary.

That's like saying the Native Americans started a war with the Europeans and lost.

So you dont actually give a shit about atrocities if Israel isnt doing them.
So you think the houthis' actions outweigh, or even *justify*, what israel has done? Obviously the houthis are bad, but the israeli government is far worse and that's really saying something since the israeli government is an internationally recognized government and not just some shitty terrorist group. You obviously don't care about atrocities because you're out here trying to defend the worst ones currently going on. Is it because you don't give a shit about atrocities if israel is doing them?

Fuck cucumber and fuck the person who first thought "Oh this would go great in sushi" and decided to ruin the timeline for the rest of us.
I don't mind cucumber in sushi, but I gotta laugh at people who get mad at avocado in sushi because "it's not authentic!!!" even though avocado in sushi is so much better than cucumber.

Okay, so that's the opposite of what I said. Great.
Your silly disclaimer doesn't take away from the reality of you trying to explain away what israel is doing. You claim that no one cares about Palestinians... so draw your own conclusions? Then you throw in a "not an excuse for what israel is doing btw" to cover your ass. Please, you're not fooling anyone.

It is extremely relevant, because it explains why Israel, surrounded by Arab countries, can get away with brutalizing the Palestinians for decades. The Arabs kept Palestinians in refugee camps as a bargaining chip, got the UN to literally change the definition of refugee to support their efforts, lost a few wars, and then decided maybe it would be better if everybody (except Palestinians) made money instead. That's not excusing for Israel; that's an explanation for why the larger ethnostates in the region allow it to happen. They simply don't care.
and this bullshit explanation is why you think israel is justified in its campaign of genocide? You say it's not excusing for israel and yet this is the narrative you go with because reasons, I guess.
