The idea is to prevent undue focus on any one part of the testimony (outside of jurors' recollections) without the corresponding in-person circumstances (the context of the examination questions, tone of questions and answers, etc). Courts in some jurisdictions may permit a certain portion of the transcript be produced at the jurors' request, but the general preference is for a reading and a cautionary instruction for the jurors to trust their recollections over the text of the transcripts.

I find it weird that the jurors don't get to have like a paper copy of the testimony while they're deliberating?
