TopicHow do people learn to play MTG these days?

Someone tried to convince me to join a casual commander match, and I generally wasn't having it. I've been clean too many years to relapse.

But he did try to teach another couple of people with extra decks he had.

Magic used to come with a book of rules. And starter decks. Then, they did away with both, and I just re-learned then through word of mouth after they developed the stack and got rid of the difference between instants and interrupts.

Commander guy says there's no stack anymore to even out damage on during a combat phase. Wut. And he's too young to have just been part of the community as it changed and learned piecemeal as the new rules evolved. He had to learn cold.

So... other than printing out a set of rules almost as long as the Patriot Act, how are people new to the game learning? YouTube?

But I also think those early ages are super impressionable and someone could be changing their body dramatically when they really hadn't thought it through as a child or young teen.

No actual doctor will transition someone during those years, is my understanding. The prescription would be puberty blockers and social transition. Surgical intervention is not normally considered an option during the time frame you're suggesting someone "impressionable" is going to make "dramatic changes" to their body.

It doesn't seem fair that every time a really good athlete comes in that has a biological advantage due to transitioning that they have a much higher chance of becoming the new Shaqs or Michael Phelps of their sports compared to all of their competitors.

Tans athletes aren't sweeping medal podiums when they're allowed to compete. That data alone seems to indicate that trans people aren't the record-breaking, field-dominating monsters you're implying, even with the studies you presented.

Yourr fear is that it's not going to be fair and that what you think of as "real" women won't win anymore, but... that's just not happening.

SunburnCostanza posted...
the onus is on you to prove you're biologically similar enough to be fair in an elite sport.

I think places like the IOC have standards and practices in place to do just that, and trans people have been allowed to compete for years without a second thought until recently.

This is how conversations with people like you usually end up going, in the end:

"When you meet these benchmarks and prove you eliminated that 'natural advantage,' it's fair for you to compete."
<meets benchmarks>
"Not like that."

The Producers
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles

Feels like a real no-brainer to say Spaceballs just doesn't rank among his best work. Not that it doesn't have its charm, but when you put it up against anything else he's done...

Ultimately, the former male physiology of transwoman athletes provides them with a physiological advantage over the cis-female athlete.

But they also say stuff like this:

Anatomical sex differences in the brain appear during early life when the in utero and postnatal surges of testosterone masculinize the male brain [9,10]. Ascribing specific behaviors to these anatomical sex differences has been challenging [11] and may involve differences in cell morphology as well as the connections between brain networks [12,13,14,15,16]. For example, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows increased intraconnectivity in males for regions of the brain attributed to perception-action coordination, auditory/visual spatial awareness and processing, cognitive processes and complex reasoning and control [16]. Females, on the other hand, show more interconnectivity in those regions of the brain attributed to memory, social cognition, and non-verbal reasoning. The sex-specific connectivity of these subnetworks may underlie the ability of males to show consistently higher levels of motor and visual spatial skills in addition to elevated sensory input from vision and proprioception [17,18,19,20].

Male brains and female brains be different? Okay... but wasn't there a study done using MRI or some other imaging solution that demonstrated that a trans person's brain more closely resembled the gender they identified as, rather than the gender they were assigned at birth?

That is, if a trans woman's brain more closely resembles a woman's brain, despite being AMAB, doesn't that discount these suppositions about differences in brain structure between genders?

I'm not a scientist, or someone who does peer reviews, but if I, a layman, can kick the tires on this car and find it wanting... shouldn't we be a little slower to accept the conclusion you quoted uncritically? Maybe kinda?

There is no historical, contextual, or textual basis to interpret the Second Amendment as granting a right to firearms ownership and operation, let alone an individual one, outside of participating in a trained and drilled militia for the protection of the federal government in lieu of keeping a standing army.

The only right you have to keep and bear arms is to protect your country.

Don't know how anyone outside the jury watched the trial and came to the conclusion was not-guilty.

The only reason the jury returned that was because of the judge... I'll be generous and say erroneously... excluding important details from being considered, including past history, recordings of intent, and even the commonplace use of the word "victim."

Their hands were tied by the instructions they were given. Anyone whose hands weren't similarly tied and came to any other conclusion than guilty... well, they're apologizing for a mass shooter that went hunting for BLM supporters to make victims.

But for guns specifically our support of them sterns from many things, but more so our innate hate and distrust of the government more I believe. Feelings that frankly are at a all time high now.

That's coming from a (deliberate) fundamental misunderstanding of why the Second Amendment exists.

People who cling to their guns out of fear of a "tyrannical government" and think they need to stockpile to resist it... aren't exercising any constitutional rights.

More to that point:

Scalia was a liar. He wasn't an originalist. There is no good faith originalist interpretation that grants an individual right to firearms, let alone for self-defense. Heller was wrongly decided, and done so for political purposes.

Nothing saying you can't own one, mind you. Just that there's no individual right to keep and bear arms. And especially not for any of the reasons gun people say.

And I can't say I blame people like you. The firearms manufacturers are a powerful lobbying group who's even selling the lies for decades. And they've been very good at gaslighting people into a lot of things about "gun culture" that aren't true.

You're just a victim of their very well-funded propaganda machine.
