General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: Arrival is one of the better pop albums. Some tracks don't do much for me, but it's fun enough throughout any my top three are genuine classics.

Johnbobb: I'll be honest, this was a tough one to get through. I was gonna say at least Fernando is good but apparently that's not actually part of the main album.

Seanchan: Overall, an enjoyable pop album, even if I never really loved it. Dancing Queen was the easy standout. I also liked that the album doesn't linger; it's 36 minutes and done.

MaxGalactica: Honestly wasn't a huge fan of this one. Dancing Queen is a classic, but everything else is just kind of there to me. Nothing really bad either, just not particularly interesting from a compositional standpoint. Fernando would've been a highlight as well if we had included it here.

ZaziGuado: I've never gone out of my way to listen to ABBA, so I felt this was a good opportunity to finally explore a little of their discography. They have a very distinguished sound and when you absorb their music through singles and everyday life, it works incredibly well. However I found myself exhausted by the end of a full album of ABBA. Their constant vocal harmonies became grating and every song sounded incredibly busy. I tried to reward a higher ranking to the songs that had interesting instrumentation and vocal styling. Tiger was a notable beneficiary of this. Overall I'm glad I listened to this but I'm content to continue consuming ABBA through the radio and public locales and never intentionally engaging with them.

Sheep007: This unequivocally does not do it for me. It's not boring, it's just not as fun as it thinks it is. Shout outs to the not-on-this-album "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for being the best ABBA song due to its heavy sampling in Hung Up by Madonna.

hotdogturtle: I kind of wish that I'd checked the track listing before voting for this album in the nom topic. This album doesn't really have any of the big hits that I know them for aside from Dancing Queen (I'm aware that a few of the songs were hits that I wasn't familiar with). This is probably a biased "21st century looking backwards" perspective, but I expect my mid-70s pop/disco(?) music to... do more? I wasn't impressed. Most of the songs were decently listenable (aside from my bottom few) but there's nothing here that have any desire to relisten to.

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Thursday, June 13th at 8:00 AM Central Time; If you do get in a vote after the deadline but before I post the results, I will probably include it.
7. Every few weeks, a nomination period will open; there may or may not be a theme. Each user can nominate one album. The following week, everyone will be able to rank their top ~5 among the choices - this will use a bottom-up scoring approach, i.e. voting for one album will give your #1 a single point, voting for five will give your #1 five points, so it is always better to vote for the maximum number of albums. The top ~5 will then be covered.
8. Skits and tracks under 40 seconds will be excluded from the rankings unless argued otherwise

General Album Comments

Seanchan: Did a first listen and found it to be very pleasant. Not sure its something Ill want to rank with this being a holiday week. The title track and Muerte stood out to me a bit.

Sheep007: This is a gorgeous album, as with pretty much everything Natalia Lafourcade sings on. I first heard her by stumbling upon Soledad y el Mar and then an earlier album, Hasta la Raiz. Much of Hasta la Raiz particular has a bit more energy, and I think I generally prefer it, but this is still very solid, though a bit more lowkey. This album was hard to rank for me because of that relatively low energy combined with my very limited knowledge of Spanish, and a lot of the tracks don't really have a hook (at least for my ear), but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

FoolFantastic: Great instrumentation and a beautiful voice - I wish I had been better about learning Spanish

MaxGalactica: Although this album doesn't have my favorite song by Lafourcade (that would be Hasta la raz), this album is her most consistent and generally well-made. The boleros mixed with elements of jazz makes this album feel like a fresh, modern take on an old, traditional genre. The production is outstanding and Lafourcade's voice is truly a delight to hear. Me being fluent in Spanish does add an extra layer of connection to this album for me, as the storytelling in the album is quite beautiful. Fantastic album overall and I'm glad we got to cover it.

  2. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
  3. Sleigh Bells - Treats
  4. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
  5. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV

To Pimp a Butterfly is an all-time top 10 for me, but we've done Kendrick before and I know from previous attempts that Interpol needs more support. Very strong lineup this cycle; it's weird for me to not be voting for Talking Heads or A Tribe Called Quest, but they both have other albums I would much rather cover.

Sheep007: This might be the silliest song in a very silly collection. I think I admire it all the more for having a chorus which I almost exclusive associate with sports.

Johnbobb: has to be the least serious song they've ever done and it's still great

hotdogturtle: This song sounds like it was stitched together from pieces of different songs. It's a bit frustrating, not because I don't like the sudden changes, but because they all sound so good that it makes me wish that I could hear longer versions of each of them.

General Album Comments

Seanchan: I'm not sure why I expected to not like this. It's metal and Japanese pop vocals, a bit weird to blend together but it works for the most part.

You can hear lots of different influence here. The beginning song is more death metal, with the growling vocals. I heard some dubstep in one song.

Johnbobb: The first time I heard of Babymetal, I thought it was a silly gimmick. Then I heard Babymetal, and I was startled by how into it I was. Now four albums later, I can say they've legitimately become one of my favorite metal bands, which I never would've imagined. This album basically created an entire genre of music that somehow manages to be equal parts cheery and heavy and nail both genres it takes inspiration from.

Sheep007: It's (mostly) stereotypical cute and silly J-Pop vocals done well and mixed in with stereotypical heavy metal. Very gimmicky but sounds more than good enough to back it up. Plus, you really do have to give points for creativity here. I always find tonal dissonance in art interesting and this tickles a certain spot.

Seanchan: Overall, I enjoyed this quite a bit. It drags a bit after the midway point but ends well.

MZero: The top 4 have been in my rotation for a long time, and Akatsuki was my ringtone for years (my ringer is usually off, but still!) I don't really like the bottom three songs but the rest is at least good imo

MaxGalactica: Well, I didn't dislike this as much as I was expecting to based on the tracks I sampled during the voting process, but it still wasn't anything special. line! and Onedari Daisakusen in particular are pretty cool. My main issues overall though are that power metal tends to be pretty uninteresting to me, and I also tend to dislike it when "kawaii vocals" get a bit too excessive, which isn't the case for most of the album, but it does go a bit too far from time to time (particularly in my bottom 4 in my ranking). I can appreciate the unique combination of J-pop and metal, but I don't feel the execution is great.

Comments on this week's choices:

Freezepop - Fantasizer:
I feel like a lot of people are passively aware of Freezepop (largely due to their repeated appearances in PS2-era Harmonix video games) but not as many people make the jump to listen to their discography. This is their most recent full album (from 2020) and represents a noticeable advancement in their sound style compared to their older works.

Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0w4O25N2mI

Great Big Sea - Play:
They're a Canadian folk rock band known for performing rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs.

I think this is their most well-known song:

https://youtu.be/mW3Wp7SH3JI?si=X5db4EBofqGkajv8

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights:
Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC5zHACynR4

Cool alt-rock/post-punk band that feels dark (but not necessarily depressing) with a great urban sound.

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly:
Just gonna drop the bombshell now. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Sample track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9fN-8NjrvI

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV:
sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkF3oxziUI4

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf:
Many would consider this their best lineup and album. This will be like trying to rank my own children, but I'd give it a shot. The variety with three different vocalists may lend itself well to ranking tracks.

https://youtu.be/DcHKOC64KnE?si=4nTQ8ld-jemPJmVx

Sleigh Bells - Treats:
Perhaps the album I have listened to more than any other. The two members of Sleigh Bells come from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, a post-hardcore guitarist and a singer from a failed girl group. The mixture of harshly-distorted guitars and cheerleader-esque chants makes something truly unique while remaining surprisingly digestible. Just a fun record from beginning to end that even the band itself failed to ever replicate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp9vupuAGRU

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues:
Sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgJ-hyzl6jg

Phenomenal band that I know quite a few people have wanted to cover. I think they're one of the more notable absent artists we still have. It was a tough choice between this and Remain in Light for what I wanted to nom.

Tenacious D - Tenacious D:
I've wanted to do this one for a while, both because it's a pretty massive band in general, but also because it's one of the most defining albums of comedy music, a genre we haven't really covered at all outside of one Weird Al album. It's also extremely digestable and chock full of short songs and skits that Fool will have to decide which to count and which to leave off the rankings! Really just an extremely fun album and one I think we're due for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL4HSiGvk68

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders:
Just shooting from the hip, was going to do Enter the Wu-Tang but I see it's already been done.

6. The deadline to vote is Thursday, June 6th at 8:00 AM Central Time; If you do get in a vote after the deadline but before I post the results, I will probably include it.

Nominating Sleigh Bells - Treats

Perhaps the album I have listened to more than any other. The two members of Sleigh Bells come from opposite ends of the musical spectrum, a post-hardcore guitarist and a singer from a failed girl group. The mixture of harshly-distorted guitars and cheerleader-esque chants makes something truly unique while remaining surprisingly digestible. Just a fun record from beginning to end that even the band itself failed to ever replicate.

I'm one of the weirdos who thinks FF12 is on the upper end of Final Fantasies but also for none of the reasons I usually play the series. The sense of exploration in 12 goes above and beyond. I also think a lot of Square's modern stuff would work better if they refined the gambit system - having literally every character controlled by it was silly, but being able to program the AI-controlled party members in their action RPGs would do a better job at capturing the idea of team-based combat.

In the original, there was just one license board that everyone used, none of the job specialization at all. I believe the job boards were added in the International rerelease, and the latest version added the dual-classing.

General Album Comments

Seanchan: Done 2 listens so far. I'm not sure I really "get" this album. It's not actively repelling me but it also just wasn't grabbing me.

Johnbobb: Did my first listen and a half today, fantastic album

MaxGalactica: The opening four tracks on this album are probably my favorite opening four tracks of any album. All four have a commanding presence and are hauntingly beautiful. The mix of synths with the ethereal strings and Bjrk's incredible voice is so good. The rest of the album is also great, but Hunter, Jga, Unravel, and Bachelorette are all-timers, so it's hard to keep up with that high of a bar. Bjrk was a major gap in this series that we hadn't covered yet, so I'm glad we're finally doing so now.

It's also worth mentioning that the single version of All Is Full of Love is a lot better than the album version and would go up a few spots on my ranking if it were here (https://open.spotify.com/track/3rrtbnOBDzKQfyYKTezEFe?si=28b54b2a6b764b30). There's also a cool Radiohead cover of Unravel that's worth checking out (Thom Yorke has stated that it's one of the most beautiful songs he's heard) ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVvO4mPoZiA

Sheep007: I like whatever the fuck was going on with electronic music in the 80s and 90s. I like weird songs, especially when theres genuine personality behind them and, most of all, they sound good. Bjork, really does it for me, and I think this is my favourite album Ive heard of hers. Its often oppressive-sounding and sharp, but never slips to the wrong side of the boundary between A Lot and unpleasant. I also think the cohesion of the album, without being samey whatsoever, is a massive credit to it each song brings something different to the table while seeming like part of the same story. Great nomination. Like Max said, those first four songs are something else entirely.

Seanchan: No strong opinions on this one. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

PunishedJeezy: Phenomenal album, probably didn't need to do a re-listen but I'm glad I did. No weak tracks, no filler.

HBJDubs: Despite it being top-heavy, really great album all-around.

hotdogturtle: This album has cool electronic sounds and I can totally understand why it's popular. However, my problem is that it's too slow for me. My musical tastes tend to favor faster songs, and in an album like this it makes it difficult for me to stay engaged or to differentiate the songs from each other. As a result I expect that my ranking will be fairly opposite to most people's who are able to appreciate the slower songs more. I just can't handle them, unfortunately.

hotdogturtle: I feel bad putting this so low because I had it higher up at first and then kept putting other stuff above it (although I did shuffle a few things afterwards). It's one of the "softer" songs on this album and I ended up ranking the "harder" stuff higher. But this is still my style and I do like it, it's just against tough competition on this album. I think that there is an alternate reality where I put this at #1 and leave everything else in the exact same order and that would still be alright.

General Album Comments

FoolFantastic: Consistently strong album throughout; nothing here I truly love but even the lower tracks are good. I definitely prefer Garbage's debut which is also consistently good but has a stronger top end.

Fluttershy_Pony: I liked "When I Grow Up" enough during nomination periods that I really wanted to make sure I found time to listen to this. Glad I did, as this is a pretty neat album.

Seanchan: Overall, I liked it quite a bit, even if it does fall off a good bit near the end. It was also a breath of fresh air to listen to an accessible, radio friendly album after the past few weeks. I would certainly listen to more Garbage in the future.

HBJDubs: So I was expecting "ok rock" from knowing I Think I'm Paranoid previously, and was very surprised to find an excellent album instead. No bad songs here!

MaxGalactica: This album was better than I was expecting based off of the sample tracks I tried during the voting process (I Think I'm Paranoid, When I Grow Up, and Push It). Hammering in My Head and Temptation Waits were especially cool. Most of the rest of the album ranged from okay to good. It's also always an interesting thing when the most popular song in an album is the worst song on the album.

ChichiriMuyo: There is just not a single bad song on this album. There are a lot of albums I love with one or two blemishes, but not this one. Ranking this album was tricky for me because I can hardly bring myself to pick a "worst" song on the album when literally nothing is even remotely close to bad, and best song is mostly the mood I'm in. This is a "deserted island" hypothetical pick for me. I am so happy that pretty much everyone has had a positive takeaway from this one.

Sheep007: I wish this album clicked a bit more for me. It's not bad, just feels a lil bit one-note? The vocalist sounds great but nothing else reeled me in. Will definitely need another listen or two before rank the albums.

Previous results can be seen here:

https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_3
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_4

The rules:
6. The deadline to vote is Thursday, May 16th at 8:00 AM Central Time; If you do get in a vote after the deadline but before I post the results, I will probably include it.

Consistently strong album throughout; nothing here I truly love but even the lower tracks are good. I definitely prefer Garbage's debut which is also consistently good but has a stronger top end.

General Album Comments

Johnbobb: Easily one of my all-time favorite rap albums. Doom is always interesting, between his distinct pronunciation and flow, his classic Fantastic 4 clips and comic book themes and his lyrics that go back and forth between harsh and goofy. Viktor Vaughn is probably my favorite of his faces beyond the classic MF Doom, though Madvillain and King Gheedorah are up there too. Basically every song on this album is a banger. I'm also a sucker for a great concept album, and Viktor's character of a time traveling villain in the streets of old NY is hard to top

Seanchan: Done 2 listens so far. As you might expect (since I say the same thing about nearly every rap album we've covered), I'm not really a fan. This is just so very verse heavy and I need those choruses to ground me, otherwise these songs tend to just glom together. The songs that stood out to me are the 2 Open Mic Nites and Can I Watch?. That's not surprising, as they're the songs that prominently feature other voices.

Which gets to my second takeaway, which is that I also think I'm just not a big fan of MF DOOM's rapping, just in terms of voice and delivery. This might be herasy to rap fans, but from my limited perspective, his overall sound reminded me a lot of Nas. I could also see maybe some of the Wu Tang influence with some of the little skit/clip things at the end of a bunch of the songs?

PunishedJeezy: Love this album, all-time classic. No real weak tracks, but the Open Mic tracks don't really compare to the DOOM solo tracks.

FoolFantastic: Listened to the album yesterday. Loved it but wasn't paying nearly close enough attention to rank the tracks. I feel like I could try again but I also rank Madvillainy in my top 100 albums and would have no idea how to rank that one either. MF Doom is one of the best examples of an album artist to me. When I want to listen to one of his projects, I'm rarely listening to just one track.

Sheep007: This album is almost entirely held up by the bars and wordplay which are, in fairness, phenomenal. Ive liked most of what Ive heard from MF DOOM and this was no different, really fun concept.

MaxGalactica: This isn't quite as strong as other DOOM records I've heard, but this is still pretty great. The top 6 in my ranking have some really cool beats, and DOOM's flow is unmatched. I'm glad we got to cover this one.

HBJDubs: Good album, but tough to rank individually

I made a playlist with the sample songs, though I think the Polysics album nominated is a live one not on Spotify (or anywhere? My googling makes me think it is a DVD concert film and not an album...)

Score: 90 (Average Rank: 7/17)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, jcgamer107 (#4)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb (#12)

jcgamer107: fun brass & sax. Snare makes it into like a jazz-march ?

5. Bad Dog No Biscuits (Track #4)
Score: 99 (Average Rank: 6.9/17)
Biggest Fan(s): jcgamer107 (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Sheep007 (#16)

jcgamer107: this song goes HARD right from the start - the brass, the drums, the radio static sounds - everything is great. Really pushes the boundaries of hard jazz. Then opens into this wild ska section just over a minute in. I eat it up every time. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (PS3) allowed you to insert your own custom soundtrack into the game - I put this song in, and for some reason it always played whenever the game started up, at the title screen. It was bad-ass and got me pumped for some hard drivin'.

4. Piano Black (Track #9)
Score: 109 (Average Rank: 5.5/17)
Biggest Fan(s): rwlh (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): Mega_Mana (#13)

jcgamer107: more dope jazz. Not enough piano though, given the title.

rwlh: lovely repetitive crunch

3. Rush (Track #2)
Score: 114 (Average Rank: 5.2/17)
Biggest Fan(s): jcgamer107, Seanchan (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): Fluttershy_Pony (#14)

jcgamer107: This is quite my tempo - jazz with some real punch. The Bond motif section is neat.

2. Space Lion (Track #7)
Score: 142 (Average Rank: 4.4/17)
Biggest Fan(s): Mega_Mana, MaxGalactica, rwlh, Fluttershy_Pony, HBJDubs (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): jcgamer107 (#17)

Sheep007: I very nearly like this more than Tank and thats high praise indeed.

MaxGalactica: This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The ambient intro with the gorgeous sax is incredible. Amazing melody, amazing chords, amazing soundscape, I love everything about this song.

jcgamer107: wow this is long, it's puttin' me to sleep. I'm sure it serves its purpose within the context of the show, but I wouldn't ever listen to it on its own. Plus the vocals are just weird.

rwlh: 10/10 song for me, an all-timer

Fluttershy_Pony: I love this song enough that I listened to the entire album just so I could give it first place. I kinda hoped to find something on its level on this soundtrack, but alas, this song is *way* beyond anything else here. I'm not sure any other album we've covered has such a massive gap between first & second place.

1. Tank! (Track #1)
Score: 155 (Average Rank: 2.8/17)
Biggest Fan(s): Sheep007, FoolFantastic, Johnbobb, Seanchan (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): rwlh (#10)

Johnbobb: might be the most obvious winner we've had, and that's stiff competition

jcgamer107: an all-time great TV show theme, that I can only ever hear with Bill Cosby (impersonations) thanks to YTMND

Fluttershy_Pony: Eh. I've honestly never been a fan of this song and kinda hate the shorter intro version of the track. I blame Super Robot Wars T; whenever any of your characters attacks or gets attacked, their anime's theme will play. So if you use Spike, you're going to hear "Tank!" whenever he does anything. And since he's a pretty decent character--very evasive, decent damage, and you get extra money for each enemy he shoots down--you'll probably hear the song hundreds of times per playthrough. After three trips through that game, my distaste for the song has turned to hatred.

BUT this extended version isn't all that bad. There are enough new moments that it feels different & the instruments are much clearer and high quality than the game's rendition. I still don't like it--and the fact that it's so high up on my list should tell you how I feel about the album as a whole--but... this song is pretty okay.
