The only debt I have is my home mortgage, which has about $200,000 left on it last I checked. I'm not sure if you count that? Pretty much anyone who has a mortgage is going to have over $100,000 in debt.

Outside of that I have $0 in debt.

Honestly, my dad was a mechanic, and I used to help him with car stuff + the maintenance of our own cars all the time. That being said, I live in a major city now, and the prospect of doing car maintenance myself just isn't something that makes sense given my current living situation. It's MUCH easier / cheaper to just take the car to the shop twice a year, and it costs me, at most, a couple hundred bucks total. Plus I don't need to buy / keep any of the tools around, or need to worry about stuff like disposing of tires / oil, etc.

TopicIf a big asteroid was heading directly toward earth what could we do?
GameReviews
10/11/25 8:47:14 AM
#5
If we identified the threat early enough, and with enough certainty that it WAS indeed going to hit us, we possibly could influence it's path by colliding rockets with it. We have even done this, and it was more successful than predicted:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Asteroid_Redirection_Test

The problem is, due to the enormous amount of uncertainty that go into predicting the path of celestial objects, usually we only have probabilities of impact. Like there are objects that have like a .01% probability of impacting earth. They likely aren't significant enough of a threat to warrant redirection. But where is that threshold. Would a 5% likelihood be enough? 20%? 50%?

And then you get into the problem of, like the test, the asteroid was actually redirected more than predicted by an order of magnitude. If you accidentally redirect an asteroid TOO much, and in an unpredictable way, it might actually increase its likelihood of impacting the earth.

Overall, it seems like with enough work and study, some point in the future we might be able to successfully redirect celestial objects that have a reasonable chance of hitting earth, but right now it seems rather risky and unpredictable.

I'm turning 35 in a few months, and so far, so good. I think a lot of it has to do with how you take care of yourself, both physically and mentally, how well you adjust your lifestyle as you get older, and making new friends / acquaintances. If you / the people you stick around with can't change / evolve, and can't get past how things were when you were in college, you're going to have a rougher and rougher time as you get older.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
It's not even just that, there's a ton of things people conveniently choose to ignore whenever this topic comes up, mainly to try and prove whatever point they already had in mind beforehand.

Like how people will hold up Canadian health care or UK health care up as an example of how much better health care can be than it is in the US, but plenty of people in Canada and the UK will tell you they're also terrible in their own ways. For instance, just a random grab off Google:

https://www.fraserinstitute.org/commentary/canadian-health-care-continues-perform-poorly-compared-other-countries

The US certainly has issues - and unfortunately, they will never be addressed because even when the government tries to fix the problem, it tends go after the wrong things (either treating the symptoms rather than the causes, or chasing after minor solutions that don't actually solve anything while ignoring the real issues, because insurance companies and "Big Pharma" have a ton of money to spend on lobbying both parties). But there are also people in the UK who would kill to have a system closer to the US model than having to deal with NHS (listen to enough British YouTubers and you'll hear this come up a lot). And I've personally known people from New Zealand who've outright said they'd rather deal with health care in the US rather than in NZ because at least in the US you're more likely to get treatment rather than be put on an endless waiting list, only to eventually get substandard help when they finally get to you.

Free health care isn't necessarily better, because you tend to get what you pay for. And if the system is being poorly run, you may not even get that. The advantage of the US model (which is admittedly not an advantage for everyone) is that you tend to get higher quality care (as long as you can afford it), which is why wealthy citizens of other nations often fly to the US for treatment in many cases.

The biggest problem in the US isn't with health care itself as much as it is with the insurance companies. Which is why we've needed reform there for decades now. Instead, we've gotten health care initiatives that are mostly smoke and mirrors that give the illusion of progress while fixing very little. Because politicians don't care about actual solutions when it's the illusion of fixing things that gets them reelected, not the reality of it.

There are certainly other problems (population heterogeneity, wealth inequality, administrative waste, etc), but if we can't even fix the core issues, trying to sand down the minor roadblocks isn't going to help much. And shifting to an "everyone gets free health care" model wouldn't necessarily magically fix all the issues (because "free" health care isn't very free if everyone is paying for it via taxes anyway). We'd probably all wind up with higher taxes and shittier health care, and be worse off than when we started.

Everyone wants easy solutions, but those don't exist. What's needed is massive comprehensive health care reform, but that will never happen because it takes effort and money, and because people in power and who have the money benefit far too much from the current state of affairs.
LMFAO it's hilarious when dolts like this really think they are on to something.

1.) Your ONLY source is a conservative think tank OPINION PIECE. Like, do you not understand anything about the hierarchy of evidence? This is literally not even considered evidence of anything, other than a single person's opinion.
2.) All data cited in this piece are just conservative opinion polls. Yet they use this to support the completely fabricated headline of Canadian healthcare performing poorly compared to other healthcare systems, which the article provides zero ACTUAL evidence to support. An honest headline would be something like "Canadians have a lower opinion of their healthcare system than other countries with more universal coverage."
3.) The author also cherry picks specific things that Canada is not great at, instead of looking at the overall picture. The overall picture of Canada's healthcare system is decent, not great, certainly far superior to the US's current system, and lagging behind systems that have better universal coverage.

And of the myth that the US healthcare system performs better for those who can afford it? There's also literally zero evidence to support this claim.

Not only this, but the USA government spends MORE per capita on healthcare than just about any other nation WITH UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE. I know you're wondering, how can this even be possible? How can the wealthiest Nation on the planet's government spend more per capita on healthcare then basically all countries with universal coverage, despite not universally covering anyone?
1.) Price gouging.
2.) Administrative waste.
3.) Profit motive in healthcare.
4.) Inefficiency
5.) And other factors

The USA has by far the worst healthcare system of any major country in the world. The only ones that are worse are those that don't really have a healthcare system at all / are extremely poor / dictatorships.

Universal healthcare is better. Universal healthcare is more ethical.

Everything else you listed is just an excuse for inaction. We can figure it out, and there have been proposed plans to deal with all of this but it just gets voted down by people who have more of a motive to use the system to make themselves money rather than actually keeping people healthy or improving outcomes.

The problem is, literally everything is out of whack. Minimum wage is way too low, cost of living is way too high. Housing is completely unaffordable. And that's not just talking about buying a house, rent is completely ridiculous as well.

On top of this, working conditions suck at a lot of places, so on top of being paid poorly and not able to live, you also have to put up with a far more hectic and hostile work environment, one person doing the work of multiple people and simultaneously needing to do so many things that sometimes it's literally impossible for a single person to do. Plus lack of benefits and vacation, unaffordable healthcare, etc. not to mention that so many people are getting classified as gig workers that you're not even able to fight for any kind of fair or ethical treatment as an employee. Add in the absolute destruction of unions and workers rights to top it off.

The average worker's situation in the US is dire, and it's systemic.

TopicSo chiropracty CAN work, I just had a spine doctor confirm it

Stimpy posted...
So, I found out today Ive got two bulging discs. Theyve slipped out of place. Last time this happened, I didnt know the cause, but I saw a chiropractor and the pain disappeared. Not this time tho. Chiro didnt help. So I went to an actual spine doctor, and she explained why that first treatment worked: if a disc hasnt fully herniated, it can sometimes be pushed back into place through physical therapy or chiropractic adjustments. But once the internal jelly leaks out, chiropractors cant do much.

In my case, the discs havent herniated yet, but theyre bulging far enough that PT might help and chiropracty almost certainly wont.

TL;DR: The chiropractor helped last time. This time, its progressed past what he can fix.

(Also doctors arent nearly as against chiropractors as the internet would have you believe.)
There is no such thing as a disc "slipping out of place".

Most disc bulges resolve on their own of given time, regardless of treatment.

A large part of the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments is placebo and performative.

Many times, bulging discs are asymptomatic, and many people with back pain are incorrectly diagnosed with bulging or herniated discs.

Bulging or herniated discs are not able to be conclusively diagnosed without imaging, and even then, in randomized control trials, medical professionals have vast disagreements over diagnoses.

Some doctors recommended chiropractors because many medical systems (especially the USA) are overburdened and traditional medicine doesn't always work perfectly for everyone, so people look for alternatives.

You likely do not have a problem that would be significantly helped by chiropractic adjustments or anything similar, what you likely need is conservative treatment, exercise, and to remove reduce back pain risk factors, such as losing weight, stoping smoking (if you do) and to be more physically active, etc.

Do what you wish with this information.

Anyway to be on topic, I was more into the idea of a cruise when I was younger, now they just seem to me like something for suburban rich people. I know that isn't the only crowd but still. There's also something kind of weird about a big floating resort but I can't deny that some of the stuff they have on them looks fun. I just don't know how fun it would be vs. going out and about on land. I'm not a big planner so I like the idea of activities being ready for me, but not so much the idea that those activities will be in a closed off setting with the same pool of people available to participate. The people probably make or break it cause you're stuck with them for a while.
Dude, cruise ships are so big, you seldom even see the same people, unless you purposeful make connections. There's literally thousands of people on board. I don't remember seeing the same person twice anywhere, in the 7 days I was there.

My wife and I rewatched the Austin Power movies fairly recently, and the humor in them is quite dated. Some of the most jarring stuff was the really dated pop culture / movie references. Not to mention the style of humor is just a bit off, watching under a modern lens.

They're still fairly entertaining, but I came away thinking "wow this is actually nowhere near as funny as I thought it was 20 years ago." Add to this the fact that the genre of movies that they are parodying is not even close to current or relevant, so it makes the movie seem even more dated.

That being said, I don't really want a sequel. Also because it's been so long, and these sequels that happen decades later are never good. Like, I can't imagine the new Happy Gilmore movie is going to be anything but terrible.

I feel like if Trump actually does use military force on a NATO ally, it might mean the end of the world as we know it, due to the sheer scope and scale of a war that involves so many nuclear powers.
