It also only sold a tenth of BOTW, so I'm really worried we're only getting incremental upgrades to BOTW forever.

It's always been a touchy subject for CE. I still remember over a decade ago if someone made a topic about hooking up at a party or whatever, without fail you get a lot of "cool story bro/yeah that happened" type of replies and other blatantly resentful shit. Like it's so outside their life experience that they write it off as trolling if anyone claims it happens. Even pointing that out will get fingers wagging at you, you can't win lol.

I dunno, you're taking a demographic where many were already struggling at this type of thing and aging them up to where turning that around has become an extremely tall order. No wonder topics about it get antsy. I'm in touch with people here who say they don't even really have friends let alone dating prospects.

Agreed, and doubly so for Chrono Cross. If I nitpick about the plot of that game, especially any connection to Trigger, it gets sour quickly. But thanks to the incredible atmosphere and environments and music and """vibes""", it's actually great if I just let it flow incoherently, like a pretty dream.

MMA is basically the litmus test for if a fighting style is useful. If it's useful an MMA fighter will use it, because they're playing to win in the most competitive fighting environment in history. It's basically survival of the fittest for fighting styles (you even see niches emerge, such as strike, grapple, etc.).

i'm not super familiar but didnt it basically boil down to what's useful is

-BJJ
-judo/wrestling
-muay thai/kickboxing
-boxing

in that order

and everything else is pretty limited in use

Yeah. I hate to get rolling on this topic because I readily admit and recognize it's all such petty shit, but he really pisses me off in ways people on CE could only dream of. He recently (as in, past 5 years) moved to Seattle and has been such a person-who-moved-here-from-SF/NY about it. Constantly checking out overhyped places and acting like any sane person does their daily shopping at Pike Place.

I think I'm done with Kenji. I don't know if his divorce is caused his mind-life crisis or the other way around, but he's gotten so weird recently

He did a video of what he shops for at a local grocery and in that video he flat out told a store employee to move out of the way from what they were working on because "I'm doing a video".

Honestly fuck him. He's been weird forever. I remember reading SeriousEats in like 2011 and already thinking who does this guy think he is. Also the fact that he sells his books shrink-wrapped (an extremely rare practice in the cookbook world) has always been weirdly funny to me. Ive played every game in the MGS timeline and I enjoyed MGSV probably more than anything else in the series (maybe other than the story in 3)

if we line up mgs 1-4 + PW they pretty much all share the same core gameplay and emphasis on story. mgs5 is by far the odd one out there, so i think this just says you like that style of open-structure gameplay more than you like mgs.

i wouldnt really say its open world but the open mission structure hurts the game. should have been automatic, not mission select. i love mgsV but if i liked big boss at all id probably like it less. gameplay hard carries yea

yeah for the people with little investment in the series plot they basically got a cool emergent-ish open stealth game so more power to them. also the technical performance was great which i think made a good impression, even the ps3/360 versions ran okay and were feature-complete

one of the earliest casualties of this trend where an established series goes open-world and loses half its charm

it basically has the opposite problem as MGS4. you go hours without any story development. it's not a huge exaggeration to say most of the cutscenes were right there in the trailers. and to top it off, the game was unfinished anyway.

my entire friend group bought that game day one, and i don't think it's a coincidence that those with little/no prior MGS experience clearly enjoyed it the most

You should never enter into parasocial relationships with your fanbase because of the power imbalance.

A lot of these big streamers are in their 30s but still act/think like they're in the 18-22 range, I guess because of primarily interacting with their audience that tends to be in that bracket.

first game's the most cohesive experience by far

I don't think being confused that an easter egg in FFX hinting to a connection to FFVII could make people angry is really something that warrants "calling out" someone for being a troll. It much more comes across as someone who's just had that shit locked-and-loaded and had been waiting to see me post anything, anywhere.

Too many topics on CE devolve into people airing unrelated petty grievances. If someone is unable to stay on topic because the mere sight of a post from a given user is that traumatic, they can just put that user on ignore, that's what it's there for :P
