MariaTaylor 08/05/24 1:36:52 PM #163 | Wow, apparently this entire season only covered about 30 pages worth of material. And you might be thinking 'Well, Fire and Blood isn't like a normal book, so 30 pages might be a lot or it might be a little in terms of events.' But no. Season 1 was 60 pages. The craziest thing is how many scenes were cut down or removed, too. So, like, out of those 30 pages, they didn't even use all of the source material they had available. Mathematically speaking, this season is probably more than half filler. That is some Naruto level filler hell. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 08/05/24 1:40:16 AM #149 | Sorozone posted... I liked the episode. Just really weak for a finale. this is how I feel, yeah. good episode, bad finale. the biggest problem with this season are plots that dragged on for way longer than required. and now, here in the finale, so many of those plots STILL didn't get resolved. they should have at least ended rhaena's plot with her actually taming the dragon, like come on. but there were so many good scenes in the episode, so I still enjoyed it but... yeah I don't know. it's all over the place for me. it really exacerbated the already weakest thing about a pretty weak season. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the worst of GoT. those seasons genuinely did not have any good scenes. this season of HotD at LEAST had good scenes worth watching, even if the overall narrative was wheel-spinning filler... the worst thing is you just know, because they pushed all of these battles back from this season into next season, they aren't going to have the budget to do all of these big battles in one seasons. so, next season, even more of them are going to get pushed back or cut. this is just bad from a production standpoint, that's what it is. whoever is deciding the outline for each episode did a really poor job, but the writers who were given the outlines have honestly made the absolute best of a bad situation, with more than a few individual scenes that really stand out. just please do better next season. (I will probably catch up on the rest of Fire and Blood at this point though. MariaTaylor 07/29/24 1:58:49 AM #117 | episode full of highlights; Daemon disrespects Oscar in private, Oscar completely embarrasses him in public Ulf trying to suddenly walk back all of his talk about being a son of Baelor was hilarious Addam actually seems kinda cool now that we're getting to see more of him. He's like always smiling but it's a nervous smile and I dunno, something about him is interesting and mysterious. The scene where Corlys told him "good job" you could tell he'd been waiting to hear that all of his life. honestly the only thing I would have liked more from this episode was slightly more build up in the dragon pit scene. Have Addam say something to the other characters, or at least Rhaenyra mention like, hey, this is Addam, he was able to claim a dragon, so don't be scared. Or at least give them a little bit of basic instruction. Still, we got to see Vermithor just kill like 40 people so that was fun I guess. (almost seemed like even Rhaenyra was enjoying it a little bit........) MariaTaylor 07/28/24 10:54:55 AM #111 | I've been finding the green characters a lot more interesting this season. The standout stuff for me was pretty much every Alicent scene in this episode, as well as the Aegon/Larys scene. Seeing Aemond's Small Council dwindle down to basically empty chairs was also interesting. He has the same problem as Aegon but in a different way and, while Aegon was in the chair, it was easy to feel like Aemond would do a better job. But now that Aemond is actually there... you can see the problems with him as a ruler. I also felt like it did a much better job of addressing my previous complaint about the tertiary characters this season. Addam, Alyn, Ulf, Hugh, barely got any screentime or characterization in previous episodes. I felt this was the first episode that took the time to give screentime and/or characterization to all of them. I'm overall enjoying the plots of the smallfolk, and my only real complaint is that I wish we got more of it. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

One constant: If there's a character I can't stand, I don't ever put them in my party, unless they serve a role that no other party member does or I'm forced to by the story. After that, I find some combination of characters I like and those who are good in battle and come up with a rotation based on that. this is my standard answer, almost word for word, as it applies to most games. two exceptions to this rule; etrian odyssey -- I'll come up with one or two interesting builds and then create a party that is capable of supporting this interesting/creative idea that I want to try. typically when I get to the endgame I'll train up more than just the standard party of 5 because I enjoy testing out all of the different game mechanics and seeing how well they work in certain situations, if they perform better or worse than expected based on theory crafting, etc. fire emblem awakening or fates -- I'll come up with interesting builds and then work my way backwards to see which characters are capable of obtaining those skills. Then, I build my run around making those main unit builds complete. secondary units will be used until they pass along skill or class access to a main unit. any character who isn't needed for passing skill/class access will be used as little as possible. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

Id personally say its everyone liked her, but mainly an idealized version of her that actually did things based off my casual scouring of Reddit reactions. She was a great character with more potential than they used her for and I think people saw that potential as part of why they liked her Several characters were heavily nerfed in season 2 (Rhaenys, Rhaenyra, Daemon) so I don't think this is a Rhaenys specific problem. It's actually REALLY similar to what happened with Tyrion in the original series. He made a strong first impression that caused people to fall in love with him, and in a way, I'm sure plenty of plenty continued to love him right up until the end. But man in those later seasons he basically kept giving Dany awful advice that she shouldn't use her dragons to win the war and didn't contribute much else. In fact, now that I think about it, it's the SAME thing Rhaenys has been doing these last few eps! Hopefully this doesn't drive Rhaenyra mad, too. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

Its a shame the worst episode of the season comes on the heels of the best. Feel like last week created a ton of buzz and they had a chance to really pour it on and become a next level show but whoever wrote/directed that one dropped the ball. the episodes feel seriously disjointed. advisors: rhaenyra you need to do something rhaenyra: no! we need to be patient and do nothing advisors: please go into hiding and let us fight the war rhaenyra: (goes into hiding) advisors: OMG WHY ISN'T RHAENYRA HERE TO LEAD US rhaenyra: (comes back out of hiding) advisors: rhaenyra you need to be patient and do nothing rhaenyra: why won't you let me do something!!!! aegon: I don't want to listen to my advisors everyone: you are a clown rhaenyra: I don't want to listen to my advisors everyone: as you shouldn't! you are descended from jahaerys the concilator, you are the chosen ruler who is destined to lead everyone, the glue that binds us together, your reign will even surpass that of aegon the conquerer --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 07/15/24 12:47:14 AM #60 | There were some weird directing choices -- lots of scenes where lines were just left hanging in the air, lots of empty space, and not always landing or going anywhere. I can't put my finger on it but something felt off.
Stuff I liked about the episode; Good that Daemon is seeing some consequences for his actions Cole, trying to emulate Otto and it immediately backfiring because he doesn't understand Baela kinda shined this episode, I feel like all of the advice she gave to everyone was really good by extension, Jace holding his own when it comes to diplomacy and contributing to the war Coryls hopefully taking a more active role as the hand moving forward As usual, the King's Landing small council stuff is exceedingly interesting I was honestly on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Larys or Cole or just ANYONE would support Alicent, what arguments people would make, what sides they would take, and it felt like everyone had a position that aligned with their characterization I'm also interested to see where the stuff with the smallfolk goes Stuff I'm wary about; Writers don't seem to understand the dynamic of Rhaenyra's council halfway through the season. It does feel like her advisors have just been disagreeing with everything that she says, and it's easy to root against them because the writers have them making sexist arguments. But at the same time, Mysaria hit the nail 100% on the head; Rhaenyra needs to rely on other people to do the things that she's not capable of doing. The writers seem to understand Rhaenyra needs to rely on a plotter to do her plotting for her, but it's like the writers are scared of having her rely on a general to lead her army for her because then she'd instantly lose her girlboss status or something. The core Daemon storyline this season has been very slow and probably overstayed its welcome last week. Things are finally moving forward but I'm just exhausted with this location already, particularly his scenes where he's alone doing nothing. If this dude who works on Coryls ship and his brother are important, which I suspect they are, the show has done a pretty bad job of building them up. What did they get like 2 minutes of screen time across the season so far? I just feel like whether they have an awesome moment, or a shocking death, or whatever else comes next, the show has really failed to make me actually care about them before that event happens. Honestly I have to just remind myself that I've liked every other episode of this season so far, and not go around doomsaying. Hopefully things will pick up in the next episode. And I'm not just looking for action or shocking twists. I want to see more of the great character focused scenes and plots that this show excels at. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 07/10/24 7:41:34 PM #53 | I don't really want to feel like I'm nitpicking but after examining the episode again there is one thing that kinda bugged me. This season overall has individually strong episodes, but the episodes can feel disconnected at times -- possibly due to a lack of communication between the writers?
Last episode, Rhaenyra's advisors gave her the suggestion to hide herself in secret and allow them to conduct the war from dragonstone. This episode, Rhaenyra is gone and... all of her advisors are now complaining that she isn't there to lead? It just makes absolutely no sense. She did exactly what they wanted and now they're complaining about it. An easy solution would be to have them trying to press the war, while Jace and Baela try to stop them from doing anything without Rhaenyra's approval, but the scenes didn't have that kind of tone. The tone was more that they were upset that Rhaenyra wasn't there to lead them. Overall Rhaenyra's council scenes have been my least favorite part of this season. Aegon's council feels a lore more cohesive and fleshed out, but Rhaenyra's council none of the members stand out aside from her direct family members and their motives and behavior are super inconsistent/unclear. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 07/01/24 2:47:04 PM #35 | I've avoided reading any further in my copy of Fire and Blood because I like this show enough that I want to watch it without spoilers. I don't particularly feel like I need characters to root for. Plenty of entertaining characters on both sides.
I do agree 2x03 was the slowest one yet, but that might not be a bad thing. We can pace ourselves while heading toward the finale. Doesn't need to be an epic twist or shock at the end of every episode. Also, to its credit; To me this felt like one of the few Game of Thrones OR House of the Dragons episodes that actually captured the spirit of what GRRMs Westeros stories are about. Game of Thrones is supposed to be anti-war, but D&D made every battle into this epic spectacle that got people rooting for the "heroes" to chop down armies of evil badguys with no names, families, or backstories. House of the Dragon 2x03 was overshadowed by this sense of dread that everyone knows war is coming, and that it's going to be awful, but the characters no longer have the power to stop it from unfolding. The blackwood and bracken stuff at the beginning was done in an extremely tasteful way; we saw the STUPID way that this kind of massacre can get started, we saw the aftereffects with hundreds of bodies littering the riverbanks, but we weren't shown any spectacle that glorified the war and fighting. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 06/28/24 7:28:18 AM #20 | they definitely put more focus on the melee weapon movesets but I think that was to the benefit of the game. also, I will say this. with every dark souls entry, miracles and spells have become more and more homogenous. elden ring tried to diversify them again a bit, but they still end up feeling pretty same-y because almost every useful spell or incantation is just 'a way to deal damage at range' with minor variations.
one thing about Bloodborne is that unlike Intelligence and Faith, the Arcane and Bloodtinge stats feel TRULY distinct. they do completely different things from each other, and both of them enable a style of gameplay that is very different from the standard strength/skill build, which is cool. also, having done a fair share of gun only challenge runs, and a few hunter tool only challenge runs, I can say that they are fun to use. you just have to get used to them. still, the melee combat feels a lot better simply because of how the weapons have such deep and intricate move sets with combo chains, while your most optimal gun and hunter tool strategies rarely combo with anything. you just shoot it once and then reposition before shooting again. there are some decent R1 to L2/Square mix ups, though. Strength/Bloodtinge especially likes combo styles that look like this: R1 -> L2 -> R2 basically you hit the enemy, they attack out of hit stun, you parry them out of hit stun. then, when they're on the ground, you hit them with an R2 or R1/L1 combo for amplified damage. since your visceral attacks won't be too strong, this is a good way to make use of the gun as part of a combo chain, and it helps a LOT with medium to large enemies who can't easily be staggered but ARE designed to be parried (like a lot of the chalice dungeon midbosses) --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

Bloodborne feels like the best balance of being difficult while also being consistent trick weapons are the main thing that make Bloodborne basically perfect. let's just take a look at the Hunter's Axe for example. in the base form, I frequently see myself using every single one of these input strings; R1L1R1L1 R1L1L1 Dash R1 Dash R1, L1 L2R2 L2R1L1R1 if the weapon is transformed in my hands R1R1 R2R1R1 L2R1R1 Dash R1 Every single thing that I listed here is good for different types of encounters which varies based on the terrain, the number of enemies you are facing, their speed, their poise, their HP, how far away they are, whether you need your gun out, how hard the enemy can hit you and how long their recovery time is, what they do out of hitstun, etc. etc. etc. Now, let's look at a weapon in Elden Ring. Here's the best input string to use in basically every situation: L2 (I'm being a bit hyperbolic here with regards to Elden Ring but really Bloodborne is balanced like a fighting game where you have a full moveset at your disposal with combo strings that are match up dependent while Elden Ring most movesets don't even have half the depth of one half of a Trick Weapon) --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 06/23/24 11:57:33 AM #6 | counting the core games, not Sekiro, bloodborne takes by far the longest to actually master. however, blood vials are so overpowered that it ensures anyone can beat the game even if they are garbage at playing it. leads to a pretty interesting difficulty curve where you can feel like the game is challenging you no matter your skill level. if you're bad at the game, the challenge is just staying alive and spamming blood vials long enough to eventually win any encounter. once you're good at the game it becomes more about avoiding damage entirely, conserving blood vials, learning combos and other optimizations, tackling difficult content that goes beyond the scope of the main game experience, etc. etc.
aside from that I agree that the 'Souls' titles are similar in difficulty, although there are some nuances. Demon's Souls is the easiest but also the most jank. it's very easy to accidentally throw yourself off a cliff in this game as opposed to the other games. but the bosses tend to have extremely limited movepools consisting of 1-3 attacks and once you learn the extremely simple strategy for each boss it's basically impossible to lose. magic is overpowered beyond belief, and even just carrying a bow around will let you cheese almost every encounter. DS1 is like 'hard but fair' except it's not actually always fair. the jank hasn't all been completely ironed out and the game design is just silly at times with how certain effects or enemies can lead to a game over scenario with no real defense aside from prior game knowledge; except the jank means that even with prior game knowledge you can still get screwed over some of those times. also a lot of weird things like needing to be cursed to fight ghosts, having way too much space between bonfires, not being able to teleport even though it was possible in demon's souls, etc. etc. I'd rank this one as 'most inconvenient to play' DS2 is like 'fair, but not hard.' this one probably rates as the easiest but it's also the game that very rarely ever punishes you for things that are out of your control. you can feel the lack of miyazaki's influence on this game and that has both good and bad elements. most of the challenges you face in this game will be telegraphed in very apparent ways and while this does make it somewhat easier than other entries it also can be a breath of fresh air at times. people complain about fighting groups of lots of enemies in this game which is a complaint that I really don't share at all. this is the game that taught me the valuable skill of fighting against multiple enemies, and also forced me to massively improve my camera control skills. I feel like the people who weren't able to develop those skills just complain about the encounters against multiple foes being unfair, but really it actually is fair. you just need to learn how to fight them. DS3 has a similar design space to DS1 with almost everything polished. there's almost no jank in this game. the unfair situations and deaths are usually telegraphed at least somewhat. I can only think of one example where a trap is completely invisible to the player and then just magically warps into existence behind you (also a trash moment in this game, but it stands out even more because of how much more 'fair' everything else is). kept a lot of the modern conveniences that were introduced in dark souls 2. this game does have one fatal flaw when it comes to difficulty and that is the way difficulty ramps up in the later half of the game. enemies essentially just become larger than you, faster than you, with more reach, more damage, more HP, and they seemingly never run out of stamina. this leads to a boring slog where you're constantly forced to hit and run against opponents that have pretty poor encounter design. this is at it's worst during some of the castle sections that are swarming with knights, most of which are an unfair match up against the player in a 1 v 1, much less in group encounters. combat arts sorta help but honestly most of them suck. elden ring takes the concept of overpowered, overtuned enemies to the next level, introducing many foes who are even more ridiculous and unfun in their design than the ones featured in DS3. however, there are two major differences; first, these enemies start appearing very early on in the game and are later joined by more and more ridiculous enemies. secondly, you are given tools that make the player character also absurdly overpowered which, in theory, levels the playing field a bit. this is like the touhou of dark souls where honestly the best strategy is probably to dodge the 8 billion projectiles and attacks being thrown at you while you spam your most powerful long range attack in response. kinda sad for the people who prefer to just play with sword and board, but sadly dark souls 3 killed that playstyle halfway through the game, elden ring buried it further, and I doubt it's ever coming back. we are fully in the combat art meta now. tl;dr bloodborne - peak game design demon's souls - not too difficult, sometimes unintentionally unfair dark souls 1 - difficult, but usually in the most unfair way (relative to other souls games) dark souls 2 - easy, but usually because it's trying to be fair dark souls 3 - inconsistent difficulty, encounters become more unfair and players lack the tools needed elden ring - relatively easy if you're willing to use the tools given to you. nightmare difficulty if you want to play an honest build who never gets a chance to attack between the boss firing 800 lasers at you. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

Enjoy the direct? relevant to the most recent discussion, the DQ3 HD remake looks pretty fantastic. I would love to see more games done in this style since I vastly prefer sprite graphics over realistic 3D renders. this is just pushing the limits of how good sprites can look. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

realizing DQ9 was DS I had the same experience. in my memory it was definitely a 3DS game, but when I played it for the first time in years I noticed right away that it had the black borders at the edges and the square resolution of the DS... honestly if the game has one flaw it's that the 'speed' of the game is quite slow. I'm playing on original hardware but I can imagine that similar to the original Pokemon DP, it would benefit massively from being played on a 'console' with speed up function --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

MariaTaylor 06/14/24 5:43:35 PM #312 | I love DQ 3 as well and it's one of the main reasons why DQ 9 made such a strong impression on me. it really feels like THE most modern game that was made for DQ 3 fans.

I miss Dragon Quest 9 it's a bit sad how much of the game is locked behind wireless features that can't be accessed anymore, but the core game experience is still intact and it's still good at least. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

I mean trading cards in general are scammy and predatory. It's essentially gambling. yeah I agree with this. gambling sucks. on the subject, mobile gaming is such a massive, predatory scam. the fact that they are allowed to use the same strategy as a casino to make money, but don't have to follow any of the regulations against gambling in any state or country, and they can even specifically target kids, is insane. the legislation is going to catch up eventually but this is a case where the technology is ahead of the current laws in a bad way. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

okay but who do you think is buying the overpriced toys kids, who I am against being scammed. as I just said in the post you are replying to. you must not have noticed it, but try looking really closely at the first 4 words that you quoted. I don't know how to more clearly say that "I'm against any scams" Accel_R8 posted... It's a bad deal but calling it a scam is a stretch. it is a scam, and it's specifically targeting children who lack the ability to understand what is a good or a bad deal. the definition of scam is actually extremely broad, and it definitely includes 'selling an item to an unwitting target for 100x the value' --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

What exactly is the definition of a "scam" to people? whatever definition is more convenient for their current argument. Leonhart4 posted... Not all the other options imply you believe it's a scam though this is true but redrocket is the one claiming there is a CONSENSUS with no statistical backing. I am not claiming anything about there being a consensus. just that his logic is poor. MZero posted... I don't get why you're so much more opposed to this than the countless other things that are extremely overpriced from vending machines I'm against any scams, but I'm especially against scams that victimize people who are incapable of reason and understanding (children, elderly, reddit users) --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

I'm surprised how many people see "Selling an item for 100x the value to someone who is too stupid to make their own financial decisions" as not a scam, but maybe you're imagining these 8 year olds as future mensa members/board 8 users rather than average kids with the brains of a dog. --- nothing could make you happier, am i right? https://i.imgur.com/CGTIEmB.png |

I kinda doubt even the diner owners would care or understand. You could bring it up with them to find out more about why it was set up and confirm the specifics about it, and then explain why you think it's manipulative to children and see what their response is. this is basically how I feel about it, yeah. I doubt the store owners would really care if I tried to explain it to them, and it would take a lot of effort, so I don't really want to do it. Shattered posted... Trading card stores (and eBay) also buy up bulk to do this. It's not a one off scenario you have run into, these things are all over under many different forms I know this guy isn't creative or intelligent enough to come up with this scam on his own, but it's still sad that he's scamming random children. -hotdogturtle-- posted... The strangest part about this is that a random regular person is allowed to set up a dispenser like that. this is the part that seems illegal to me. it feels like it probably requires a permit, which I doubt he has. I'm not the kind of person who is going to go out of my way to tattle tale on someone reselling trading cards without some kind of sales permit, but, if you're scamming children that's a different matter.
