The first time I realized that ChatGPT and AI might not always be the most reliable source of information was when I asked it if I should drive through the railroad crossing gates if I'm stuck between them and I see a train coming. It assured me that the best course of action was to remain in my car and contact emergency services because driving through the gates would be dangerous and illegal.

Um, the Chinese Civil War is the root cause of the current division, and the war technically never ended due to the lack of a ceasefire or peace treaty. It's like telling people to ignore the events of 1948 when talking about Palestine.

Chinese imperialism is the reason the conflict exists. Taiwan and the Taiwanese have no desire for reunification with China and they pose no threat to mainland China.

Who cares? Taiwan has been a de-facto self-governing nation for 3/4 of a century. It's time to move on.

Even if the CCP did invade, they would never gain access to the chip factories, which all have kill switches in place, and if absolutely necessary, American fighter jets parked in the Philippines ready to blow them up after evacuating the top engineers and bringing them to the United States.

It would be the ultimate pyrrhic victory for China.

A human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) (H5 bird flu) virus infection in the United States has been identified in the state of Michigan. This is the second case associated with an ongoing multistate outbreak of A(H5N1) in dairy cows.[i] As with the case in Texas, the individual is a worker on a dairy farm where H5N1 virus has been identified in cows. While a nasal swab from the person tested negative for influenza in Michigan, an eye swab from the patient was shipped to CDC and tested positive for influenza A(H5) virus, indicating an eye infection. Similar to the Texas case, the patient only reported eye symptoms. CDC has been watching influenza surveillance systems closely, particularly in affected states, and there has been no sign of unusual influenza activity in people, including in syndromic surveillance.

Based on the information available, this infection does not change CDCs current H5N1 bird flu human health risk assessment for the U.S. general public, which the agency considers to be low. However, this development underscores the importance of recommended precautions in people with exposure to infected or potentially infected animals. People with close or prolonged, unprotected exposures to infected birds or other animals (including livestock), or to environments contaminated by infected birds or other animals, are at greater risk of infection.

Imagine having Trump for a second pandemic.

I've taken a full bottle of ivermectin, so I should be safe.

NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, with impacts expected to arrive on Earth as early as midday Friday, May 10, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024.

NOAAs Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the suns corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earths surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. SWPC has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth. A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

"This is an unusual and potentially historic event." - Clinton Wallace, Director, NOAAs Space Weather Prediction Center

What's the tough decision? If you're unwilling or unable to devote the time necessary to train a puppy, you give it up for adoption/give it to a friend/family member/etc. That is what 99.9% of people would do. You don't shoot it in the face.

TopicWomen are less likely to die when treated by female doctors
McSame_as_Bush
04/23/24 11:37:59 AM
#1
Hospitalized women are less likely to die or be readmitted to the hospital if they are treated by female doctors, a study published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine found.

In the study of people ages 65 and older, 8.15% of women treated by female physicians died within 30 days, compared with 8.38% of women treated by male physicians.

Although the difference between the two groups seems small, the researchers say erasing the gap could save 5,000 womens lives each year.

The study included nearly 800,000 male and female patients hospitalized from 2016 through 2019. All patients were covered by Medicare. For male hospitalized patients, the gender of the doctor didnt appear to have an effect on risk of death or hospital readmission.

The data alone doesnt explain why women fare better when treated by other women. But other studies suggest that women are less likely to experience miscommunication, misunderstanding and bias when treated by female doctors, said lead study author Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki, a senior assistant professor of health services research at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine.

The new research is part of a growing field of study examining why women and minorities tend to receive worse medical care than men and white patients. For example, women and minority patients are up to 30% more likely to be misdiagnosed than white men.

Our pain and our symptoms are often dismissed, said Dr. Megan Ranney, dean of the Yale School of Public Health. It may be that women physicians are more aware of that and are more empathetic.

Research shows that women are less likely than men to receive intensive care but more likely to report having negative experiences with health care, having their concerns dismissed, and having their heart or pain symptoms ignored, the authors wrote in the new study. Male physicians are also more likely than female doctors to underestimate womens risk of stroke.

Part of the problem, Miyawaki said, is that medical students get limited training in womens health issues.

Dr. Ronald Wyatt, who is Black, said his 27-year-old daughter recently had trouble getting an accurate diagnosis for her shortness of breath. An emergency room physician told her the problem was caused by asthma. It took two more trips to the emergency room for his daughter to learn that she actually had a blood clot in her lungs, a potentially life-threatening situation.

There is a tendency for doctors to harbor sexist stereotypes about women, regardless of age, such as the notion that womens symptoms are more emotional or their pain is less severe or more psychological in origin, said Wyatt, former chief science and chief medical officer at the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, a nonprofit research and advocacy group.

Women seem to experience fewer of these problems when treated by other women.

For example, a study published JAMA Surgery in 2021 found that women patients developed fewer complications if their surgeon was female. Another JAMA Surgery study published in 2023 found all patients had fewer complications and shorter hospital stays if they were operated on by female surgeons, who worked more slowly than their male counterparts.

Women primary care doctors also tend to spend more time with their patients, Ranney said. Although that extra attention is great for patients, it also means that women see fewer patients per day and earn less, on average, than male doctors.

Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, said several studies suggest that female doctors follow medical evidence and guidelines, and that their patients have better outcomes.

Theres lots of variation between women and men physicians, said Jha, who was not involved in the new study. Women tend to be better at communication, listening to patients, speaking openly. Patients report that communication is better. You put these things together, and you can understand why there are small but important differences.

It was entertaining for sure, and I don't really mind that it was explicitly non-political...but the way the press behaved was silly. I know they're war correspondents, but they were more reckless than the troops they were following around.

But my bigger issue was how tolerant everyone was of them. "Oh hey random militia folks, I know we just met five minutes ago, but you can trust me, look, I have a press badge! Also, thanks for letting me stick my camera in your face during the middle of this gunfight and please protect me if I'm in danger."

There's also a Magical Negro, which is always unfortunate.
