https://nintendoeverything.com/capcom-president-says-nintendo-switch-2-response-was-better-than-the-company-expected/

In a new interview, Capcom president and Haruhiro Tsujimoto shared some brief thoughts about Nintendo Switch 2, commenting that the response to the system was better than the company anticipated.
Tsujimoto remarks were interesting as they came about somewhat unprompted. He was recently asked about Monster Hunter Wilds and the games sales. While that title has sold ten million units, Capcom needs to find a way to push beyond that.

Tsujimoto said the following about game hardware pricing, reaching new consumers, and more in that interview:
Thats correct. However, we also found that the PS5 barrier is unexpectedly large. The console costs about 80,000 yen in Japanese yen. When you factor in the cost of software and monthly subscriptions, it comes to about 100,000 yen at the time of purchase. This is not an amount that can be easily reached, especially for younger generations. This situation is not limited to Japan, but is similar overseas as well.
Our next challenge is to overcome these obstacles and get Monster Hunter Wilds to as many people as possible. Sales will begin in the future, so we are currently formulating a strategy to take advantage of these opportunities to boost sales throughout the year.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 2025 at a price of 49,980 yen (tax included), and the response was better than we had expected. While prices vary by country, this reaffirmed the high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers.
Capcoms comments about Nintendo Switch 2 may suggest that theyre thinking about how they could bring Monster Hunter Wilds to the system. If nothing else, the console should get more support from the publisher down the road. So far Capcom has brought over Street Fighter 6 and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

Former PlayStation boss says "no one is in touch with their fan base more than Nintendo" and even Sony "was never this in touch" with what players wanted

PlayStation's former head Shawn Layden says Nintendo is more in touch with its fan base than basically any company of its size, which is also the reason it hasn't suffered from the post-Covid gaming slowdown that other publisher's have.

"If it's not broke, don't fix it, Layden told HipHopGamer when asked what he would do at the head of Nintendo. "I think Nintendo's been very intentional in what lane they play in. And I'm not being dismissive about that at all. I mean, I think they're very focused on who their fans are and what their fans want."
"No one is more in touch with their fan base than Nintendo," he continued. "Even PlayStation was never this in touch with the fan base as Nintendo is. They know who their fans are. Look at it this way. During the pandemic, when we saw revenues in video gaming rising significantly because we're all locked inside and can't go out, a lot of companies hired a bunch of people because they thought this curve is: 'All numbers go up. Let's chase that number. Let's go, go, go. Throw some more gas on the fire.'"
Layden then explained that after lockdown restrictions eased up - who woulda thought? - people went outside and didn't have as much time for their consoles, at least partially leading to all the dev layoffs we've seen in recent years.

"Well, actually, Nintendo knew that would happen," Layden went on. "So, they're like the one team that stayed just in position. They stayed on course. They had their plan. They're moving their plan. So they didnt have to suffer the peaks and valleys so much as if you're chasing the opportunity. They just know what their opportunity is. They see it. They understand it better than anyone else. And they go for it and they do it really well."
"If you put me in that job, I would just stand back," he concluded.

Is he right?

I get that its cool to hate on Sony for various reasons and decisions,(their live service push) but saying that the PS5 flopped is factually wrong.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/c/c0d00d09.jpg

It's relative and nuanced. It's not a flop but it's not really that successful either, doing worse and peaked earlier than its predecessor despite gaming population having boomed with the Switch blowing the PS5 away and both PC and Mobile expanding.

PlayStation 5 Sales Fall Short Of PS4, Even As Helldivers 2 Breaks Records
Sony predicts a quieter year, but online FPS Concord is still coming soon
Sony sold over 20 million PlayStation 5s in its last fiscal year, an impressive number that nevertheless failed to hit its original goal of 25 million, and even missed its revised target of 21 million consoles sold. The latest numbers make it clear that the next-gen hardware will probably never catch up to the sales of the PS4, even as Helldivers 2 crushes all expectations after becoming the fastest-selling Sony-published game in the companys history.

Hardware has been consistently declining YoY to the point PS announced they were no longer focusing on hardware sales and have shifted to focusing on engagement and being platform-oriented, similar to Xbox.

https://www.thurrott.com/games/playstation/320914/playstation-5-sales-declined-11-percent-last-year

Key Segment Highlights
  • Hardware:
  • PS5 units sold: 18.5 million (-11% YoY).
  • Hardware revenue: 1.13 trillion yen (down from 1.21 trillion yen in FY23).
  • Software:
  • Total game software sales: 2.5 trillion yen (+13% YoY).
  • Add-on content alone contributed 1.34 trillion yen (+24% YoY).
  • First-party software sales declined to 28.9 million units from 39.7 million in FY23.

You think they'd be doing all of this if it was a massive success that exclusives would thrive in?

And sure, they've got big revenue and profit right now (which takes into account both its PS4 and PC venues too) but I don't think their mass layoffs and studio closures are something they're happy about.

I don't think he's saying they're right about the quality of the PS5 itself, but pointing out his experience that PS4 players adopted PS5 much slower than every other gen aside from PS3 which there is some statistical truth in. There are multiple reasons why FF16 didn't do well but it being a third party dedicated home console exclusive is definitely part of it. PS5 might not be a complete flop but most of their and Xbox players are less keen on buying new games than playing live service.

https://twitter.com/Griggity/status/1892977812371312827

https://www.eurogamer.net/live-service-games-continue-to-dominate-accounting-for-40-of-time-spent-on-ps5-and-xbox-in-us-last-month
Players are still very much focused on a handful of live-service games, as over 70 percent of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players in the US played at least one of the top 10 live-service games in January.

Further, more than 40 percent of all playtime in the US in January across those consoles was spent on those same 10 live-service games. That's according to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, based on Circana's Player Engagement Tracker. "Used to be that players would jump from big game to big game to some other games but they were most often moving to something new that they purchased," he surmised. "Now, the live-service games suck out a ton of available time, and it's hard to beat free if it's good."

More:
https://www.thegamebusiness.com/p/bringing-your-games-to-other-platforms

Were way beyond the point where people will swap game consoles for exclusive games, says Circana games boss Mat Piscatella.

Speaking on The Game Business Show after the release of the latest Circana market data for the US, Piscatella discussed the success of Forza Horizon 5 and Stellar Blade.

Microsofts Forza Horizon 5 was published on PS5 in April, having initially launched in 2021 for Xbox and PC. The PS5 release helped the game reach No.3 in May in the US, and was still going strong at No.6 in June. Its now the 11th best-selling game of the year in the country and one of the best-selling PS5 games of the year worldwide.

Meanwhile, Stellar Blade was a PS5 exclusive from 2024 that transitioned to PC in June this year. As a result, the Sony game rose from No.185 in May to No.5 in June in the US charts.

Weve been seeing this now for about a year or so, Piscatella said. Every month youre seeing a game pop up thats been gone for a while. And youre like, how did that happen? Well it came out on another platform.

People who buy a hardware system these days, theyre doing it because of the ecosystem, because of their friends list. Youre not going to get people to transition consoles because of exclusives anymore. Were way beyond that point.

People are entrenched into their systems. And bringing the content to them is the only way to win. And that is what everyone is doing, except for Nintendo they tend to do their own thing. Even they could benefit from it, but of course they wont, thats not their MO.

Although Nintendo sticks with exclusives, its worth noting that The Pokmon Company is increasingly releasing its games across mobile and Switch platforms, including the upcoming Pokmon Champions and the newly released Pokmon Friends.

Piscatella believes that in a market as competitive as this one, going to where players are is proving essential.

In the US at least, the Top Ten live service games suck up half of all gaming time every month, and every other game has got to fight for the remainder. So, bringing that content to where people are is the only way youre going to be able to win in an environment like were looking at right now.
Forza being this strong thats great. That really bodes well for its next iteration, if they come out day one across systems. Every game finding its way to more stores and ecosystems that is how youre going to survive and win.

Mat Piscatella: "I've been talking about this issue in video games for months. Low income consumers had already been getting phased out of buying hardware. Now we may (are lilkely to) see the same thing McDonald's is, with middle income consumers also getting squeezed. Same conditions, same behaviors." Bluesky

https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/fortnite-biggest-competitor-new-game-analyst

Speaking with Greg Miller on Kinda Funny Games about everything going on across the gaming industry, Piscatella laid out some sobering figures for the video game audience in the U.S, pointing out that 30% of players won't buy a game this year.

The players that do? Only 12% of them are buying a game once a month. The vast majority of players buy only one or two games, meaning free-to-play games like Fortnite are fighting every new release for attention

https://www.installbaseforum.com/forums/threads/industry-q-a-mat-piscatella-answers-your-questions.3249/#post-289443

The availability of Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, GTA, COD, etc is far more important to a platform today than exclusive content. Sure, exclusive content still has its value, but nowhere near the level it used to. And for 3rd parties, there's just no reason to make a single platform exclusive unless that platform holder is going to provide the investment and support necessary to dramatically lessen the risk of overall development. Making games available on several platforms, and even device types (Mobile, PC, etc) helps provide more bites at the apple, and less dependance on one audience or manufacturer. The bets are so big now and carry such tremendous risk (so often now one release is make-or-break for a studio) that there's really no option to place the entire bet in one place. Again, not unless some platform holder pays a lot of money for it.

Sega which includes Atlus and Persona has outright said that their recent success comes from being multi-plat rather than staying locked to one system as they used to be.

Comment on there:
The blog of what happened is really cool. I'll post it below. John talks about what happened.
We had extraordinary luck on day one and spent a beautiful hour with the Habinyanja group on the edge of a clearing where adult gorillas were eating (they are vegetarians) eating almost exclusively wild celery. The young gorillas were, of course, playing. Fantastic photographic opps! We were in and out of the forest in about 5 hours. Day 2 had us tracking the Rushegura group and trackers took us into a completely different section of the forest. Here we were in a dense canopy and with tracker determination found the troop in a little more than an hour. The group was in a rest period after probably having been feeding all night. We observed up close and personal babies nursing and youth playing in the presence of the silverback that was incredibly heartwarming. So much caring and love among these creatures. We were back to our vehicle, basking in a wildlife encounter high in about 3 1/2 hours. Mission accomplished!!
Imagine our surprise and absolute amazement when we woke up the next morning to find that the Rushegura group had traveled for three hours and tracked us!! The rest, you already know.

During a recent Q&A session after the company's latest financial results (via VGC), one caller asked the panel of executives for an update on PlayStation's live-service strategy amid the delay of Marathon and following the shutdown of Concord.

In response, Sony's chief financial officer Lin Tao said that she still believes in live-service games, despite recent negativity, explaining that other games like Helldivers 2 and Destiny 2 have managed to produce a steady revenue stream that didn't exist five years ago.

"Last year Concord [shut down], and this year Marathon was postponed, so somewhat negative news has been coming out," said Tao (via an interpreter).

"But if we look at the past five years, five years ago live service games were almost non-existent for PlayStation Studios. We [now] have Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, and Gran Turismo 7, and Bungies Destiny 2, so we have these four live services contributing to sales and profits in a stable manner."

"So in terms of the transformation, its not entirely going smoothly, but from a longer-term perspective, if you look at the changes over five years, you see that theres definitely been a change," Tao said.

It's funny how what might ruin Sony the most isn't any console gaming related thing but the possibility of countries continuing to outlaw lootbox/gacha MTX.

Sony Senior Vice President Sadahiko Hayakawa says they are gradually shifting their gaming business from a hardware centric business model to a community and engagement based platform business model #PlayStation

In the gaming business, we are moving away from a hardware centric business model more to a platform business that expands the community and increases engagement. - Sadahiko Hayakawa

He says overall Sony are making a shift to creation as a company, as the 3 segments of games, music and pictures make up 60% of Sonys total revenue. For example shifting from output devices like TVs and to creation devices like digital cameras. Also things like music streaming, music catalogs, crunchyroll and teaming up with Bandai Namco to create new entertainment and IP. In the gaming business the shift towards a platform business is increasing. He says they are transitioning to entertainment creation to expand and to improve stability and profitability.

Everything soon to be a Playstation.

Follow the legal rules for emulation and experience those titles as they were meant to be in consistent frames without snares and hiccups.

They should either beef up the hardware or allow devs to better optimize. They choose neither and hand you a copy without discount. Which if youre happy with that, cool, but it doesnt compare favorably to the polish and hardware of Apple that can be had at standard entry level prices.

You need a strong PC to do that in which case you wouldnt need any console at all. At least the S2 is still the best deal for portable while PS and Xbox have nothing other than accessibility for casuals which Nintendo obviously is ahead of as well.

Most of their games already run fine. Even PS5 Pro has stuff like Elden Ring having performance issues if you want to nitpick that. As Ive already stated, Apples polish of its closed off system that requires installing other OSes in order to run many programs is akin to Nintendos dominance in portable gaming. There are far more things than just power and history has regularly shown that products that focus exclusively on power at the expense of other things tend to fail.

They also dont spend on making their games function properly with stable frame rates. Or just release games in alpha like Pokemon.

Experimental games are good and Nintendo is finally getting better in this area, but lets not pretend they werent as stale as anyone for a long time. Decades of same old sanitized New Mario bros, no original characters allowed in Paper Mario, etc.

Theyve always been funding experimental games. They got bayonetta because nobody else wanted to publish it. HD-2D were carried by them. They made their own 1st party visual novel nearly 3 decades after their latest entry while Sony and MS has ghosted nearly all their IPs from before 2010.

Pokmon is like the one franchise that emulates the modern AAA industry by being annual cashgrabs that release in non-functional states and thats mostly on gamefreak and even thats because Nintendo lets their studios work on their own pace. What was non-functional about Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Smash Ultimate, Kirby Forgotten Land, Xenoblade 2, Pikmin 4, Metroid Dread, Animal Crossing NH etc?

well yeah, most of the world is basically run on computers. Without any specific criteria other than company X being pricier than company Y you kinda have to go with what what each companys products bring to the table.

I believe the comparison is on being relative to their peers.

Nintendo since its still just a gaming device. I literally dont know if you can even stream something like netflix on it.

on a dollar for dollar comparison you get way more potential out of main apple products like their phones or computers.

By this logic all gaming systems are overpriced compared to phones/PCs. I mean you cant even use dedicated home consoles without it being chained to monitors/TVs so might as well add in the cost of compatible TVs/monitors for PS5/Xbox series.
