It's a shame how well this and Mario did. Studios are gonna learn that a video game movie doesn't have to be good, it just has to have a bunch of references for people to drown in. And if it's just good enough they'll have armies of people readily defending it. "It was actually surprisingly good and as it's a movie for kids, it doesn't have to be good."

I think both movies were decent but definitely agree that the Mario movie heavily relied on references while having weak writing.

A better way to understand it is to go through the history of the word. Lolita, the book, came out and caused an upsurge in people thinking it was okay to lust after children. Because English is a highly popular language to use in Japan the term "Lolita complex" came about to refer to people who were into girls as depicted in the book (ie. pretty overtly underage). It would then get shortened to "lolicon", as is very common to do in Japanese (especially on the Internet). There would be a further shortening to "loli", the word that refers to the person that that lolicon lusts after.

It is very explicitly what you are referring to with the caveat that it only refers to girls (shotacon is for boys) as far as a Japanese audience is concerned. The biggest change would be from the non-Japanese one, which has taken a very "sanitize the word" stance in the same way that conservatives use dogwhistles. Something along the lines of a 1000 year old dragon that looks and acts as if she is seven is somehow enough to show that it is actually about just being youthful, as an example.

Alright sounds solid. Its confusing because you hear different definitions of that word. They changed that tweet because of backlash since people thought they were calling that character pedo bait while people with anime pfps went around calling them tourists and saying that loli is about body type, ie short and petite.

Yes a lot of those are style choices made for ease of animation. Like how anime characters all have weird side profiles in 2D but relatively, but stylized, normal faces in 3D space, those are style choices meant to make animation easier.

People misused and normalized the term over the years. It quite literally means "sexualized child" and pedophile is a valid translation of lolicon.

It's one of those cases where the fluid nature of language has muddled communication.

From my understanding the Japanese use it the same way we do petite. As in a petite adult would be labeled a loli. But as you say a lot of people use the term loli in a sexual context to also include literal children characters so you have this weird situation where a term mostly used in sexual situations is used to describe petite adults and underage girl characters that are prepubescent.

The term loli is something that confuses the hell out of me because theres tons of people saying that its about body type. Ive always saw it used exclusively for underaged characters and those that are deliberately drawn that way (1000 vampire trope) but Ill admit that artstyle plays a huge role too. But I found out that even the official twitter account for edgerunners called Rebecca one and thats just confusing.

It's a Japanese/anime thing. Most characters that look like teens or young adults are middle schoolers too.
Japan has a very disturbing youth fetish.

Sometimes its an artstyle thing. Anime artstyle makes characters appear much younger because all the indicators of age, like noses and lips, get simplified to mere lines and there is a stronger focus on the eyes. Sometimes theyre drawn with rounder and bigger heads. In that artstyle children and adults have the same face with the only indicator of age being their height. In the real world even people of very short height, Im talking below 5 feet, still look like adults because they have adult faces.

It depends on the series. Octopath Traveler all the main casts are adults and people in their 30s are labeled as young adults.

The late Takeshi Shudo, the head writer of the original anime, mentioned their appearance in the anime were animation errors from the animation staff. In his blog he mentions that that real world animals dont exist in the Pokemon world. The Pokemon Company stance from one of their leaked merchandise guides claims they dont exist because Pokemon take up that role.

Yeah I can see why people think like that. As I said in my previous post anime style muddles things by a lot. Being short isnt the same as being childlike, one of my coworkers is the same height as her 10 year old daughter, but she doesnt have a childs face but an adult womans face and adult proportions.

If you have the anime girl a smaller head, a more defined nose and smaller eyes she would look more like an adult but the stylization makes her face look childlike instead of an adult face and its common for adult anime characters to have skmilar faces to anime children.

Yikes. Anime drawings are very tricky under that rule because anime is inherently a very neoteny style with adults and children having similarly stylized faces.

Its hard to describe. Whereas Lola is a hot bunny and Krystal is a hot fox, Roxanne is a normal teenager who would be very pretty if not for her deformed-brown-dot-for-a-nose.

She is what is called a Disney Dogface, design wise theyre human characters with dog snouts, but they retain their human ears.

They were created by one of the old Disney animators to bypass Disney no human rule in the comics. Peg Pete is probably another Disney Dogface as one of the goof troop episodes shows she has human ears.

As I understand it sexuality as an identity is a relatively modern thing. People in the past didnt conceptualized being attracted to the same sex as part of a LGBT identity.

I remember those late night blocks they had with old cartoons. Toonheads and another show where all they played was black and white cartoons from the 30s and 40s. Also a cartoon theater, Mr Spim I think.

The wording on the Japanese version uses the word ningen which while its direct translation is human it can also be used more akin to person or mortal instead of strictly meaning homo sapien. Dragon Ball for example uses that word to refer to all mortals, not just humans.

Larian just straight up are tired of Baldur's Gate and the Sword Coast and the Forgotten Realms and want to work on their own IPs that they control and don't have to put up with WotC's creative decisions.

IIRC Larian started work on BG3 DLC but cancelled it because they were tired of the setting. The epilogue does hint towards DLC.

WotC confirmed that there will be a BG4. With Larian stepping down to work on their own IP who should be tasked with a sequel?
