do you wear a helmet with these things? because i've seen ER statistics, and head injuries have gone way up with the proliferation of those rental electric scooters. high speed, lack of helmets, and the fact they're whisper quiet mean you see a lot of collisions with cars/bikes/pedestrians that end in concussions or worse.

How far is the station?

A 30 minute digression walk uphill-ish (but going home would be downhill, yay).

Arrays are really simple, just an arrangement of rows and columns. Can be drawn or done with counters or whatever. Like the image below.

It also helps them to remember the terminology because when you use them to multiply a number by itself, you end up with a square. And then your square roots are just whatever the side is.

As an adult who understands square numbers and square roots, it probably seems like overkill, but a lot of kids really benefit from the visual or even from using counters as manipulatives to make them.

Are squares, cubes and square roots reasonable as basic, thought? I remember learning that stuff when I was in high school [Year 7/aged 12-13 at the earliest]

Always good to support at home if you can, but teachers shouldnt be relying on it.

If your kids are struggling, Id recommend using arrays as a visual aid. Helps them acquire the concept and also gives them a (slow but reliable) calculation method if their multiplication fluency isnt all that.

Thanks for the advice, can I just clarify - what's an array? Is that like providing a times table? (Like a 13X13 table of factors and products (all credit there to my kids for helping me learn the metalanguage)

I normally start drip feeding in the language of square numbers when theyre in Grade 1. Teach more explicitly about square numbers and drip feed language of square roots in Grade 2. Teach square roots in Grade 3.

I had to give Gremlin #1 a quick tutorial on powers and roots tonight. It's her extension homework, and they haven't covered any of it in class. Clearly there's the expectation parents can help.

I was thinking we didn't work with those until like high school, but I guess I do remember learning the basics in elementary school now that you mention it. It wasn't until like 4th or 5th grade, though.
