No clue if that's actually true. Seems kind of farfetched considering the sheer number of them and the size of Amerikaland.

The passenger would very likely be around if it was never hunted on a mass scale. The population would likely be much lower though than its peak however.

I'm reading a book right now that describes how people would light sulfur under the pigeons' roosts at night and then come in the morning to collect the bodies or devise huge sky nets to catch and kill the swarm of birds. Mass torture of passenger pigeons in new ways seemed to become its own sport.

Is it A Feathered River Across the Sky by chance? I highly recommend the book if you interested in passenger pigeons, it is insanely detailed. Probably boring and too much for an average reader, but perfect for someone who can't enough about passenger pigeons.

Also, the author discovered there were at least 2 more wild birds that lived on past the 1900 Ohio passenger pigeon. One was killed in 1901 in Illinois, and the body still exists in local college. Another was shot in Indiana in 1902. The is no true conclusive proof for this one, but is likely true since a few decades after he shot the bird there is correspondence between him and another person about the the bird and the shooter regrets that the bird rotted away in his attic and he threw it out. Very unlikely someone was be lying when writing such a letter like that.

As usual, habitat destruction did most of the work, but hunting was #2 on the list.

Hunting was the main reason passenger pigeons died off. Essentially the telegraph and railroad killed them. The telegraph allowed hunters to have super precise and up to date knowledge of where masses of birds where nesting. Railroads allowed for cheap transportation of them across the country so any killed passenger pigeon would bring in at least some money.

It's nice to hear that some on here are familiar with this. I can't say I'm in a lot of conversations where I bring this topic up, but the few times I have been with people into zoology, they'd never even heard of the passenger pigeon.

That's crazy to think about considering it was ubiquitous with American life before the 1900s and now hardly anyone knows about it. The kid who shot the last one, for example, showed his parents the dead bird and they knew what it was from THEIR childhood, but he did not. It's like a piece of classic American culture was wiped out with the species itself.

It is mind boggling there are no known photos of a wild passenger pigeon. The only photos of living passenger pigeons are of a stool pigeon and birds living in captivity. Such a shame we don't have a photo of their massive flocks.

Even before the Trump regime the FBI would constantly say they stopped terror attacks that where essentially the FBI goading a mentally ill person into trying to purchase illegal weapons from the FBI or something similar.

That 70s Show (the first few seasons of the show) is good, but it is a rather run of the mill sitcom. Community was ahead of its time.

No, registering a car from Canada in the States and vice versa is fairly annoying from what I've heard.

If any Chinese EV manufacturers open plants in Canada it likely will be with the idea of eventually trade between Canada and the States will normalize and thus Canada will become a vector for them to be able to import vehicles into the country.

Yeah, in general a car needs to be 25 years or older before you can import it to America. You can get around it in some exceptions but it is a very annoying process.

Would probably take some time. A lot of people only get supplemental food stamps, it is not their entire food supply. You are likely to have to people stop paying bills and rent first so they can buy food. Also, a lot of America is rather overweight so the whole "9 meals from revolution" thing will be delayed for many people.

Also, a lot of great art is amazing because of HOW it was made. The technique used, the materials used, the struggles had, and the intentional details put into it.

AI generation can mimic the way something looks, but it has no artist, no technique, nothing to appreciate outside of maybe pretty. Remember that for many, art is art because of how it was made. They love the details of creation. And hey, I can see some interesting value in HOW AI stuff is made, but it is not the same and thats why some people dont like it.

It feels like those games that use randomly generated dungeons. They work, they are definitely levels, but show me one person who prefers them over an expertly crafted layout with thoughtful platforms, enemy placement, item distribution, and shortcuts.

While I do think most AI is slop, some people are very talented in manipulating the algorithms to make interesting art. Some people put a lot of effort and struggle into getting it just right. I think AI can be another legit tool for making art just as a paintbrush is.

Of course it takes ideas from other artists, but as a I said early, all artists take ideas from other artists. It just so happens that AI can have access to a larger database than someone's memory.

No one makes truly original art. All art (and ideas) are based at least partly on prior things.

That said, I think the big reason so many people hate AI is because of how it has the potential to rapidly destroy livelihood of many people.

Before the industrial revolution a talented tailor could make a good living on their own schedule and business. There are anecdotal stories of tailors essentially being forced to work in factories for longer hours, not on their own time, and making less money. If the gains of the industrial revolution where evenly spread it would have been a net benefit for society. The problem is that most of the gains were concentrated in the very few and the overall quality of life went down for many in the initial stages of the industrial revolution.

The problem is AI may repeat the same process that happened with the industrial revolution.

No, they should name it after Obama.

Wonder if there was mass anger against people recording music since it put many live musicians out of business and the same against synthesizers and electronic music since people could replicate instruments without being skilled at them.

My university used to delete yours when you left or graduated but they changed the policy around the time I graduated so I still have mine. Also, I got to just have my last name be my e-mail and I sometimes get emails from confused students who are obviously contacting the wrong person who has the same last name as me.

Would have been interesting if this was AC3 back in 2012. I actually enjoyed the 1700s story in AC3 and it was a tragic and bittersweet one, not a "hurrah, the American Revolution is great!" story. A Reconstruction story could easily capture tragic and bittersweet vibes.

I know it probably would be modern Ubisoft slop, but the historical setting of Reconstruction is so underused. I don't trust Ubisoft to do it justice, but the concept of cancelled game sounds great.

I can't even think of a single video game that really covers Reconstruction and it is rare in all media.

With how long modern AAA (or I guess "AAAA" since this is Ubisoft) video game development is who knows what the political climate will be when it released.

I would bet that the idea for putting Yasuke in AC Shadows was thought out in 2020 or shortly after. In prior mainline AC games you play as a non-historical character since playing as a historical character limits what you can do with them. I would not be shocked if Yasuke was shoehorned into the early game development with Ubisoft just trying to follow the trend back then of being "progressive".

Well fun facts to add to that: Their track "All for you Sophia" is also about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand; his wife's name was Sophie, but they turned it into Sophia for better lyrical cadence.

I just thought it was just their name. Pretty dumb in hindsight since most band names are named after something and not just chosen randomly.

The band Franz Ferdinand is named after Franz Ferdinand of World War 1 fame. The song Take Me Out really should have been a clue but it took me years to realize this.

What did he record on? VHS and Betamax weren't invented until the mid 70's.

He used a bunch of different things. One thing he used was U-matic from when it was released in the early 70s (and he apparently even used it until the 90s). Not sure what he used before than. I know however by 1969 there were various recording technologies available but they were expensive and cumbersome to use.

Just found out that a super hoarder in Australia could have recorded about 30 still lost episodes of Dr. Who. Since late 1969 until his recent death, this guy seemed to record as much as could.

Unfortunately he seemed to mostly just be a compulsive recorder and did not really organize his collection and tapes and such were lying all across his home and property in seemingly no particular order.

It is unclear if any his Dr. Who recordings would be salvageable but they are very likely gone since 95% of the collection was thrown out by his estate after he died. A Doctor Who lost episode searcher was 2 weeks late and only a few tapes from the early 60s and 70s were left.

No Doctor Who stuff has been found on these tapes but there are a few bumpers and commercials that haven't be found elsewhere such as this:

The Feast of Steven is likely the only episode that has no chance of ever being found, but I suppose weirder things have happened. For example, 2 Dr Who episodes were found in a Mormon Church somehow. People started a rumor that it used to be a BBC storage facility but the building was actually built in the late 1970s or early 1980s and is not affiliated with them at all.

The first Wizard of Oz film and quite a technical and artistic feat. It was apparently 120 minutes long and hand colored. Quite insane for such a long film. It also has the 1st known original film score. We take concrete film music for granted, but it took over 15 years of film history to create a true film score instead of just having some people just play music over the film.
