Also, just because there are different timelines doesn't mean that there are different Marios. Whether or not the same person in a different timeline is actually a "different person" is more of a semantic issue.

IIRC, according to the flowchart in question, the Paper Mario games are the dreams Mario has if he never wakes up in Subcon.

Majora's Mask gave a different feel though. More than any other game for a very long time, the game just felt so alive. To me when I played it the first time, I was stunned by how I did not need to make the world move, the world moved around me and I had to play my part in that. Every NPC has a story basically. You can manipulate time so it's pretty inconsequential in the end, but in some apspects that also made the impact stronger. You've saved Gorons from winter, prevented an alien invasion, stopped an old laby from being robbed, stopped forest polution etc, then you reset time and do something else now knowing all those things you prevented are happening. The 3 day system was for the time a brilliant way of accomplishing this imo.

This says it all as well as I could, pretty much. Just the fact that you could follow Anju as she walks around in the rain one day was kind of mindblowing to me at the time.

As can be seen from my list, I grew up with just an N64, so games with an emphasis on story and narrative were still kind of a novelty for me when I played Majora's Mask. Obviously Ocarina has a fleshed out narrative (for N64) as well, but something about the intimate nature of the storylines in Majora's Mask stuck with me. Even the main conflict between Link and Skull Kid is rooted in their personal connection. I realize now that something like Anju/Kafei is hardly the peak of romance in video games, but at the time, I was very impressed. There was more at stake here then just "Good Guy beats Bad Guy."

Fortnite being a universe unto itself is actually a reason *against* me picking it for this Rushmore, tbqh. It makes it feel like something beyond "video games" in a way.

I'm really surprised I'm the only one picking GTA III. It obviously wasn't the first open world game, but the current rise in them on consoles can be traced back to GTA III as an ur-text.

Does Disney+ come with your room at Disney hotels? The app isn't designed to be viewed without an account, I'd imagine, so they'd have to a design a whole new interface/UI.

Edit: I mean, just offering the programs for free on the in room TVs would probably be simpler.

Remember when "Milkshake" was considered the worst song ever for some reason? There was a "Worst Song of all Time" board contest back in 06 or so, and I don't think I've ever seen a more dominant winner than "Milkshake." Nothing came close to beating it.

I feel like there should be games that didnt age well not necessarily because of gameplay but because of characters or story. Nothing really comes to mind though.

I tried to think of examples of this too, but any time I came up with something my mind went: "If you said _____, you're wrong! They were never popular!"

MGS4 is a really good choice, but it seems like it already has enough support, and there needs to be some "support" for RE tank controls.

I've honestly never played Wizardry and just voted for it because I thought old-school obtuse RPGs needed a mention here. If there's a better option I'll change my vote to that. I considered Dragon Warrior, but the gameplay for it's not really obscure or difficult, just really basic. I am now remembering that you have to go back to the king to save, though. Hmmm...

I agree that "Coffee, black" means no anything, but I feel like I've been asked to clarify a lot more recently.

I actually watched a documentary in a theater last month about competitive Tetris! It was from like 10 years ago, so none of this was in it, so this was a nice update.

I remember being struck by the fact that one of the competitors (who made it to the National Finals) didn't even realize until filming started that you could press "B" to rotate the pieces in the opposite direction, along with some other technique that everyone else was using. There was something so pure about that. There's no way that anyone could be a top competitor in any game anymore while playing so "sub-optimally."

I'm reminded of a small moment from a miniseries I saw recently called Nolly. The main character is a soap opera actress from the 80's who brags about how their show has 45 million viewers every week. One character laughs at this and goes on to point out that the show airs three times a week, and that while the ratings "add up" to 45 million at week's end there's really only 15 million viewers. It's the same 15 million watching each night.
