I read the second article. It's fairly spot on. I think the terms patriarchy and toxic masculinity are correct and helpful for some folks but I think end up being polarizing. I think at this point patriarchy is a loaded term. But I think a lot of men would understand if you said something like "men are are punished for being vulnerable".

In my men's discussion group, one common thing that comes up "If I tell my wife I am stressed about something, she is very supportive. But she will avoid bringing it up ever again because it stressed me out once." I'm sure it happens with men talking to men as well.

i think i agree with this and i also think people seriously underestimate the power of language and rhetoric in terms of how certain ideas are received. i don't think changing how you talk about certain things is going to work all of the time, but i think people with good intentions and approaching certain conversations in good faith are falling into a trap of using language that - through no fault of their own - becomes interpreted as hostile

that shook the industry in the same way

if you don't have a substantive response to the whole of my point, don't bother directing posts at me.

the crux of my point is that deepseek struck a blow against what i see as a noxious and stupid economic bubble, and i cheer it for that reason. the /degree/ to which it is more efficient, while somewhat relevant to me, is an afterthought. through the damage to the hype cycle of this over-invested technology, my hope is that we more quickly reach the point of investors seeing the limited applications of ai and it finally being consigned to a niche market.

But think about why you're only interested in this idea when a Chinese company does it and not when Meta or Stability did similar "OpenAI killers" a year ago

because the technology and motives that underpinned them was still as wasteful and money hungry as the original. if an american or french or swedish or whatever company had come out with a cost and resource efficient competitor that shook the industry in the same way, i'd be having the same reaction. ai is still a suckass product, but if it's not killing the planet and sucking all the oxygen out of whatever space it's in then i don't give a shit if it lives or dies.

also re: deepseek, the primary thing that makes it unique is the efficiency of resource use and being open source. if it turns out there's a cheaper way to develop similarly performing models for a fraction of the price, then the american tech sector's ability to generate huge amounts of vc funding through ai hype diminishes severely.

Delivering Emergency Price Relief for American Families and Defeating the Cost-of-Living Crisis

I hereby order the heads of all executive departments and agencies to deliver emergency price relief, consistent with applicable law, to the American people and increase the prosperity of the American worker. This shall include pursuing appropriate actions to: lower the cost of housing and expand housing supply; eliminate unnecessary administrative expenses and rent-seeking practices that increase healthcare costs; eliminate counterproductive requirements that raise the costs of home appliances; create employment opportunities for American workers, including drawing discouraged workers into the labor force; and eliminate harmful, coercive climate policies that increase the costs of food and fuel. Within 30 days of the date of this memorandum, the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy shall report to me and every 30 days thereafter, on the status of the implementation of this memorandum.

If the United States used its full power against Israel Republicans would have won a lot more than they did in this last election.

Americans dont give a fuck about Gaza and care about Israel only in a weird religious sense.

"A YouGov poll backed by the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU) Policy Project and released on Wednesday showed that among the 19 million people who voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but did not vote in 2024, nearly a third named Israel's U.S.-backed war on Gaza as a top reason for staying home."

insane how resistant people are to the idea that the failures of the american political class create opportunities for bad actors like donald trump to exploit, and instead insist that the bad actor is the whole of the problem

israel only exists in it's current state to act as a political tool for western, specifically american, geopolitical interests in the middle east. if the united states leaned with it's full weight on israel to come to a peaceful resolution to the current issue, it would be done quickly because israel is only as powerful as the us gov'ts resolve to support it

i think it might be more accurate to say that there is a /new/ kind of anti-trans rage that's been born out of a reaction to trans people finding marginal levels of acceptance in the mainstream. now that it's not taken for granted that everyone thinks we're freaks, the people that do think that way are getting more riled up about even small amounts of pushback on transphobic speech and behavior

illegal immigration is a very risky workaround to a deeply broken system of legal immigration

but i completely understand why people do it. the correct response imo would be to just start naturalizing undocumented immigrants and investing heavily into the structures of legal immigration so that no one feels compelled to avoid the process

The point is the current system is so calcified that it needs to be violently broken in order to be cleaned up, then replaced with something better. Obamacare was the incremental solution that was safe in the short term and completely useless in the long term. We need something that makes things significantly worse in the short term, but enables long term improvement.
