They experiment with their bodies, and they might imitate models of relationships they see, and they might even engage in sexual activity (e.g., reenacting their own victimization), but none of this is sexual attraction. It really doesn't make sense in any way whatsoever to call a 7 year old a pedophile, unless your understanding of 7 year olds is that they are sexual creatures. Regardless of whether it is true, we then also have to address the appropriateness of such a joke. And because he made it publicly, we also have to address the discomfort such a joke would cause to other students on the room who actually have been sexually assaulted and might now feel less comfortable in class. On top of that, the kid's joke included this claim that he has some rare disease that causes psychotic breaks during which he can attack random people. As the teacher who has been given absolutely no heads up about this, it's obviously absurd. But 5 other children who don't know this sit within his hitting distance, so there's that element, too. And now we also have to address the discomfort that kids in the room might feel about mental illness being used to make such an outlandish and inappropriate joke. It's pretty much guaranteed to blow up in your face no matter what happens. Add in missing context that would have made my post longer but would also make it clear that students knew they're supposed to share something silly and not actually incriminating (like the girl who confessed to sneaking into an apartment complex swimming pool without the card key or the girl who admitted she stole a "take one" bowl of candy on Halloween). Some kids just can't be protected from themselves despite whatever warnings, disclaimers, and filters I integrate into the class. They will find an opportunity to share their weird sense of humor and fringe opinions. Tiptoeing around having fun because of some paranoid obsession (heh) that it might somehow end in a kid's suicide is pretty absurd. There are SO many opportunities in a discussion-based literature class to look stupid, weird, and fucked up. Teenagers are figuring out how to navigate everything while forming their worldview, morality, ethics, etc. Because of this, your concerns *are* valid, but you're also missing the (imo uninteresting) context of how I establish my classroom as a safe, supportive, respectful place to be vulnerable and grow that *also* makes room for humor and sarcasm to break the tension of all the dark shit we necessarily study. After everyone moves, I tell them to introduce themselves to their new group and vibe check the table: who has the committed the worst crime? I jokingly announce that we need to know who to watch out for. After a couple minutes, I bring the class back together. I call on people and take volunteers to share the worst crime they've committed. Everyone's having a good time. Most kids share some milquetoast defiance of authority, and I make fun of them for being nerds. One last kid raises his hand to share his worst crime. "When I was 7 or 8, I non-consensually touched a child." . . . . . . . . . . . The class immediately erupts. If he's real, wtf. If he's joking, wtf. And now I have to navigate the bullshit I've invited into my classroom, because we have 80 fucking minutes left to talk about "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," a story about a perpetually abused child. Long story short, I tease out of the kid the following information, in the following order: - "non-consensually touched a child" did not mean sexually; he phrased it that way to get a reaction as a gag - what he actually did was hit another child (sort of; this changes later) - he has some rare kind of dementia that causes episodes wherein he blacks out and attacks people randomly Just to pause and give some additional commentary: yes, he and I are having this conversation in the middle of class with 30 other sophomores and my TA watching. I'm trying to find an off ramp for this weird thing he started, but every response he gives is more wtf than the last, and I'm too invested. Anyway, to continue with the shit he tells me... - he actually was never diagnosed with anything, he just "has dementia" - he has a psychotic episode every couple years - actually, every couple months - actually, every couple weeks - also, the non-consensual touching of a child was not only non-sexual, but was also done during a game of tag, so now the non-consensual part doesn't even make sense. His "crime" was pushing another child of the same age while playing tag. In playing up his "crime" for a reaction from his classmates, made himself look like a psychotic pedophile. He had Patti Harrison and Sam Richardson on with him, and it was interesting listening to them talk about the show, but it was like watching a live, amateur podcast. He's not very good at improv. Also, he said he always likes to bring on a local comedian to his ITYSL shows, and the guy he brought was obnoxious. He doesn't the entire time begging to be on the actual Netflix show. So you go lay down to be by yourself and ready your art books, but then the next day you went into the bathroom, and it looked like the hole in your toilet had shrunk. And you said How can that be? Theres no way they couldve shrunk the toilet. But then you saw in the trash, a receipt for Home Depot for a toilet the exact same size as yours, but with a joke hole thats just for farts! They replaced your real toilet with a fart toilet, and now you cant take a dump in your house because your toilet cant suck them down, and you feel sick to your stomach! I saw Tim Robinson do an I Think You Should Leave live show. He showed us an extended version of this. I wish the whole thing made it into the TV show, but it must have been like 10 minutes long.
