You realize that that's how this has always worked? The incumbent party can't win elections. And when they lose their incumbency, they quickly win seats en masse. There are literally 3 examples in HISTORY where the next election after the president switches parties doesn't result in mass wins for the no-longer-incumbents. One of which was less than a year after 9/11.

Like, the main thing stopping Democrats from winning congress in 2018 is simply the lack of Senate seats up to flip.

That's a huge issue though. They may flip the house but they are just as likely to lose seats in the senate as they are to gain them. It's a really tough map for them. It's six years after 2012, and Obama pulled them a couple of seats extra they probably don't get usually. All the Republican seats up for grabs are really tough gets for Dems.

I just don't see them winning the senate, period.

I would be shocked if he's primaried. Especially if he does the generic republican things generic republicans want him to do. They might not be "excited" about Trump, but as long as he throws them a bone every once and a while, they won't want the headache of an entire primary process.

Especially when his base would revolt.

It kinda seems like the best teams regularly win.

It's certainly not all luck, but luck is a factor, to a larger degree than it is in basketball or football for sure. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to you to decide.

You routinely see 7/8 seeds make deep runs in hockey.

You do see a good number of wildcard teams in football as well, so I wouldn't say those two are completely different.

In basketball that is conpeltely unheard of taking out one or two flukey years, so I definitely agree there. But then again you have basketball fans complaining how predictable and boring the playoffs are except the finals, so "best teams wins 99% of the time" doesn't seem to be a crowd pleaser either!

I saw Black Pearl again last week (gonna see Dead Men soon) and it was way better than I remember. I also love Wreck it Ralph. Good movie. If we are including Pixar, Ratatouille is definitely up there

The first PotC movie is so good it's absurd.

I know people hate the fourth one, but personally I think 2/3 are pretty bad too so it never really bothered me.

Interesting points, but I don't think it necessarily follows that a person that is a white supremacist is in a gang. Attending marches is not enough evidence to prove someone is in a gang. Gangs have official memberships.

He was also strange in terms of consistent political views. He supported Bernie last year, posted things criticizing Trump for his racism, posted long rambling rants about male circumcision, along with dozens of other crazy things. I'm not saying he is definitively not involved in gang activity, and white supremacist groups obviously need to be monitored similarly to other gangs, but it would also not surprise me to find out he was a crazy loner, inspired by the hateful ideology and going to their events but not involved with other white supremacists.

Governor and Congress races aren't really comparable in the first place.

Well of course not, but then in that same vein neither are presidential and congressional races, but I've seen the same comparison.

Montana is definitely red, but not THAT red. They almost voted for Obama in 08 and Obama did fairly well there even in 2012. They just don't like weak democratic candidates, apparently!

EDIT: he lost by 15 in 2012, so my memory wasn't quite correct there. He just did better than Clinton, which I guess is a very low bar.

Afaik Bullock (the governor) was a pretty strong candidate, and Quist was really liberal for a state like Montana. I'm also pretty sure that people are usually less partisan in votes for governor than for national races.

Well this is more what I was getting at anyway! The found a guy to beat a weak republican opponent in the gubernatorial race already, so they should be able to find a guy to beat the very same person again in a less important race. Putting up a weak candidate and losing by maybe a little less than you were expecting isn't a hooray kind of moment. I'll get excited if they can actually put together a good showing in 2018.

ESPECIALLY considering a libertarian candidate ran strong (most likely drawing more support away from the republican) and 1/3 of the vote came in after he literally assaulted a dude. And Quist still lost by mid/high single digits.

Continuing on the theme here … If you look at the returns from any of these counties, they are pretty good for Gianforte. I cannot find a county (yet) where Quist is running where he needs to be in order to win statewide. Of course, it’s early: We still need to see complete returns from these counties.

Plus we get to laugh when reporters spend his entire time in office rushing him and basically daring him to body slam them in the nation's capitol.

I'm not going to celebrate not losing as badly as usual against a guy who assaulted a reporter the day before the election and in a race where a libertarian is also running at around 5%.

Yeah, well, the democrats put up a candidate for governor in that same state in the same cycle against the SAME guy that is going to beat them today, and they won by four. This isn't a good result. Winning is a good result.

He wouldn't get jail time but yes I believe he can unless Congress votes to expel him.

Would he actually have immunity from being jailed? Or is the sentence just deferred or something?

It's a misdemeanor assault, not a felony. And he didn't seriously hurt him. It's extremely unlikely he'd get jail time under the circumstances.
