I've seen $3k Gibsons that shipped with hopeless necks (either already warped, cut wrong, or truss rod cannot compensate enough), fucked finishes, wonky electronis, you name it.

I kinda wonder if they just assume no one's dumb enough to buy the stuff they have in that price range.

maybe that's part of it but i think it really comes down to gibsons being seen as drastically overpriced and not very good for what's currently popular in guitar-led music

i'm noticing squier has gained some sort of post-ironic cred and a lot of really good guitarists will use them now

I like his This Week in Stupid videos on occasion, but I remember he did some internet debate with a feminist professor some time ago and he did very poorly.

His points could be summarized as "Something something, manspreading! Blah blah, mansplaining!" It was pretty cringey. And I say that as someone who has some negative opinions regarding feminists and feminism.

I know the one you're talking about. Imagine the type of people who watched that and thought Sargon won handily. That's gamergate, well, the dregs of its remains at this point I should say. I never really thought they were a dangerous bunch, but certainly one of the more notable motherloads of stupidity I've encountered in my net-drama adventures.

This. I have never heard of Sargon or seen Anita popup in almost a year. Point is, these people are worthless to the world. They are just as worthless as you and me; following this "drama" is a waste of the finite time you have being alive.

you gotta understand that for a lot of these forum-gamer dudes, whose list of hobbies pretty much start and end at "post about the intersection of video games and politics online", this is literally the only thing happening in the world to them. it's the filter through which they interpret all other news and they don't have much else in their lives to distract them from it.

yea, the whole "everyone is running around goofing off and making friends" idea you hear about is kind of a thing in the past. most of the newer MMOs like ESO or something feel a lot like single player games and even in games like WoW, it's very easy to go the entire game without interacting with other players - you have to seek out the social end, and it's limited unless you're really trying hard.

i can only really speak for WoW because that is the game that i put the most time into. everyone plays the latest content in that game, meaning that they want to do the latest raids, the latest questlines, etc.

WoW players do two things:

1. Grind. Grind and grind and grind and grind. They will grind reputation points (doing quests and dailies to get high "reputation" with groups, yielding them rewards). They will grind daily quests. They will grind world bosses to increase their item level, to increase their weapon's power, etc. They will grind to unlock things like the ability to fly. They will grind to unlock cosmetic mounts and items. They will do solo runs through old raids (which are easy since they dont scale), over and over again , for a 1% chance to unlock a mount (I know people that have done runs on raids weekly for YEARS just for a mount they still haven't gotten). They will farm cosmetic items. There's always something to grind for some kind of reward.

2. Play the end-game content. For those that arent content with just getting the gear they grinded for, this is where you test it. You have raids, some pvp, and other little things. A lot of players are into what is called "Progress Raiding" where they will work with their guild to complete the new raids as they are released. It is actually very fun IMO and toppling a tough raid boss with your guild after the Nth attempt is probably the most rewarding experience I've ever had with a video game, but to get there you have to grind, study the boss fights, coordinate with your guild, get the right gear, block off two nights a week (or more!) to raid, etc.

Okay so #2 I can understand. It's not my thing but I understand. #1 though...I dunno what these people get out of doin that, emotionally.

you're not too far off but the social/chat room element of most MMOs died a long time ago. it was kind of a product of a different era thing, hard to explain unless you played a lot of online games in the early 2000s.

a lot of MMO players from my experience are just addicted and love the sense of continually leveling up their character and hitting larger and larger numbers for dps/healing/etc. they're the only types of people that will play a game for hundreds and hundreds of hours and not enjoy any of it just so they can get to one point they enjoy

As someone who plays games that are basically 0% emphasis on time played, 100% emphasis on executing properly, this is super weird to me. Like, their motivations for playing video games are totally the opposite of where I'm coming from. I'm really into stuff like Rocket League and Dota and a big part of that is everything gameplay-related being available from your first match.

for me it's mmorpg's, i know this is reductive as fuck of me to say but i can't shake the feeling that they're just glorified dress-up simulators with elaborate chat rooms for people who want a sense of progression and socializing in their life without leaving their room

i get that hardcore raiding and pvp take skill but as someone who's been involved with real esports on an irl basis it's still kinda hard to take seriously especially considering the time commitment playing such a huge role

guitar was easy enough and has an insane amount of free high-quality learning sources online

piano definitely seems like a more serious endeavor to learn though

not be creepy

the new civics from last year onwards look really nice imo
