#14. Lore

It used to be fun seeing a guy that looked and sounded like Data acting like a big clown and laughing a lot. I can try and rationalize those thoughts and feelings as a more innocent era, but unlike with say Power Rangers, many cartoons, and Linkin Park, I have no connection or memory of that nostalgic feeling of whimsy and passion when it comes to the over-emotional android brother of Data. The only feelings I have with regards to Lore now are revulsion, disgust, and disappointment.

I would wager that the first image that comes to mind with Lore is him laughing hysterically. His emotion chip, a feature Data does not have but seeks to learn more about constantly, is overwhelming and there are no bounds to how cloying his personality becomes. If Data is the aspect of a innocent and curious being removed of any emotion besides the function of learning more and questioning why things are, Lore is the corrupt soul who knows too little and does not seeks answers and is corrupted by self-aggrandizing, pride, and attention seeking likely due to negative emotions of loneliness, depression, and jealousy.

These are some wonderful concepts to explore and compare and contrast against not only Data, but the emotional spectrums of the crew members and show how steady they are even with emotions. The problem lies in the performance. Lore is, at his best, the loudest and most tiresome person in the room. He has massive daddy issues and little brother envy. He is Loki without any of the charm Tom Hiddleston injects into the role. He is a massive-scenery chewing large ham so Brent Spiner can actually exercise his jaw. At his worst and his most often...

He is the coke-baby of Donald Trump and Harry Ellis from Die Hard fueled only by Four Loko and Red Bull.

I also desire to make mention of the performance Brent Spiner gives as the villain in the Master of Disguise. As atrocious as that movie and his over-the-top performance are, it is still somehow less cloying than many of the scenes Lore is featured in.

The character of Lore as a parallel concept and foil for Data is a welcome and likely necessary one. The performance and writing for Lore are maddeningly deficient.

#15. Borg Queen
FIRST CONTACT ONLY

One of the troubling things about going back and watching earlier episodes of TNG after already experiencing First Contact is noticing what makes the Borg Collective so much scarier without the Borg Queen existing.

The Borg Queen was a terrifying power behind an uncontrollable, zombie-like viral spread amongst the Enterprise crew, even corrupting beloved Data with her influence and making Jean-Luc Picard mad with rage. She was alien, she was evil, she was godlike. There was something so mesmerizing and menacing about the way she looked, the way she moved, and her stated goals. In a wonderfully horrific space disaster movie, she was an incredible force of will.

But that was in 1996, around when Star Wars was being re-released in theaters and extremely cool action things were the best things. I didn't really know who or what the Borg were besides transformative locusts. And like a lot of the things Star Trek: First Contact got wrong about what kind of an atmosphere and drive Star Trek has compared to most other futuristic settings, the Borg Queen disrupts what's so good about the Borg: their alienness.

The Borg are an alien species. A truly alien species. They have a completely different mindset that is extremely difficult to understand or even fathom. Every Borg is just a subset, a cell, of a much larger organism that just seems to learn, adapt, and grow without stopping or slowing down. It's an event horizon, an inevitability, an impossible villain to overcome where the struggle against them is more than enough conflict. The Borg are scary like zombies are scary like viruses and plagues and memetics and obsolescence and the march ever onwards to an unknown and unknowable future. On more micro scale, the fears the Borg elicit are rock and roll music and new hairstyles and gender identities; they're a wavelength the next generation is tapped into that scares the living hell out of the previous one. Except it's much scarier, much deadlier, and would likely cause the end of your world as you know it.

The Borg Queen weakens all of that just by existing. She becomes a conduit for our understanding, a face we can talk to and learn from and communicate with. She isn't human, but she acts as something we can understand much, much more than a complete hive. She is a queen and we can compare her to bug races. She is their leader and control, so we can try and debate, try and change her mind, try and understand more what they want and reason with. It doesn't work that way, but it's a face we attach to a thing for our own understanding. She is also the weak point. Instead of defeating an entire swarm of creatures that adapt to every new method, that corrupt and overwhelm and use your own numbers against you, there's just the head, the power, that if taken out, acts as immediately as a killswitch.

The Borg Queen exists only as something the heroes can conceivably defeat.

#16. Beverly Crusher

After railing on how much better Dr. Beverly Crusher was as the doctor, it feels really weird putting her in one spot above Pulaski. The TNG medical team just doesn't have much to offer, especially with Geordi and Data both serving as more visual and unique technobabble problem solvers. For the most part, Dr. Crusher is wallpaper. She's a familiar face in a vital role, but doesn't have much of anything more than that to work with. As you'll see with Wesley's entry, I've forgotten/blocked most of his first two seasons on the show along with any mother-son interactions that probably didn't matter. Her only other storyline was a below-room-temperature will-they won't-they with Jean-Luc that lasted for years and years without anything worth paying attention to.

Dr. Crusher was a steady hand, but unfortunately extremely forgettable.

Alright I'll give ltm a chance.

Still, to call Boyhood overrated trash. Why did you use those specific words? I get not liking a movie, everyone has a few films they dislike that have received critical acclaim.

I mean a 100% movie being overrated, sure it can happen. When you call it trash, you're putting in the 0-30% range. That puts it in the Jack and Jill range. So of course you can't act surprised when people disagree with that assessment.

Now let's take Mark Kermode's radio show review of the film.

You said the shooting period was irrelevant, but that point gets refuted.

praised as a masterpiece of cinema because of how it was made,

In the 8 minute review, how much of the praise concentrates on that point? Not that much.

But this isn't just about Boyhood, let's see what your thoughts are on other critically acclaimed films. You showed such strong opinions and appear to be eager to debate the quality of a movie. I mean you are lamenting why so few people will talk to you about Dunkirk.

I'd be happy to see what your views are on the following critically acclaimed films:

Aguirre: Wrath of God
La Dolce Vita
Cinema Paradiso
Chungking Express
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Breathless
Don't Look Now
Sonatine
The Asphalt Jungle
In the Mood for Love
The Deer Hunter
Rome, Open City
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
The Conversation
The Conformist

Now that's a pretty wide selection of acclaimed films. Some are better than others and they cover a very wide range of taste.

I assume you've seen at least half of these, but let's get a cursory opinion on them and then if you feel like it, we can go over these films and talk about them without using words such as "trash", "garbage" and "overrated".

I know a few users have talked glowingly before about some of these films. People do occasionally want to check out what all the fuss is about.

Am I the only person who started reading this in Vincent Gambino's voice from My Cousin Vinny? Like, when he's in full sarcasm mode? Not a very friendly post to start conversation, sir.

Edit: also, reading some of those movie titles in his voice is hilarious

I also should say that this is far and away the best bad movie I've ever seen. Plan 9 doesn't even come close.

eh, i wouldn't go THAT far. perhaps i like plan 9 better because it's so diverse in the ways it screws up, while in the room it's mainly "the acting is terrible and the story and dialogue are terrible and make no sense." and ed wood (the movie) contributed to my appreciation for plan 9. also, wiseau tried harder to get it right - he actually took multiple takes and overdubbed many of the lines. wood's "let's just use the first take and never look back" mentality makes plan 9 a crazier movie.

both plan 9 and the room are probably the most enjoyable "so bad it's good" movies out there, though.

i got an ed wood-ish vibe from the disaster artist teaser, btw. very hyped for this movie.

I will never not evangelize DS9. I have an almost flawless success rate in getting new converts -- I mean, fans -- too!

It helps that it has numerous strong serialized elements. Feels more modern as a result. But you've gotta endure some mediocrity until around Season 3, which is off-putting for folks, understandably. It really improves after that.

As someone who was in the middle of Season 2 before my sister forgot her Netflix password months ago (or just can't be bothered to give it again), I can't believe these would be considered mediocre! They're definitely a step up from TNG, and I wish I could watch more so I could rank them.

Growing up, I never really got to watch The Next Generation in any particular order. My parents watched as it ran and I would catch reruns many times, so I never experienced the show chronologically. Nor have I entertained the thought of sitting down and getting through every episode partly because the first season, and first two episodes in particular, are really tough to sit through; mostly because I've already watched seventy-five percent of the episodes more than a few times without needing much context for before or after; and because of two characters in particular.

The first of these two characters will not be ranked. I didn't even realize this character was part of the seventy-two until the very first write-up, and I really don't care to read about or refresh my memory of him in any way. I remember a cowboy hat and a whining vice asking too many questions, and my body shudders and I don't know the context but I don't like it. I also don't wish to read on and spoil myself if he does show up in Deep Space Nine because, unlike TNG, that's a show I do wish to watch in order.

However, I have very little doubt my lowest-ranked character will ever appear again.

#17. Katherine Pulaski

I must reiterate again that my internal timeline of The Next Generation bounced around so much that until just this moment, I never realized Nurse Ogawa never appeared before the fourth season, and never in more than sixteen episodes. In that context, Dr. Pulaski was always, “Where's Dr. Crusher?” While I'm not the largest fan of Dr. Beverly, she was and always will be a more welcome presence than the smug doctor who picks on Data and drains life out of the screen with her presence. Her disgust for technology and articifical life would be problematic enough. However, the way she goes about expounding upon her justifications for a human's superiority to a robot, and the way she passive-aggressively needs to comment on anything that can be fashioned towards her point-of-view are reasons why she is the lowest of the low.
