the way they move in sync is kinda weird, and how whoever you're not controlling still homing attacks, except they're not hitting anyone, they just hit the air next to you. As sacrilegious as it sounds something like those binding rings from Chaotix would make me suspend my disbelief better

for games where you have to hold back to block, yes
it means there's a certain element of commitment necessary, and also puts a little bit of emphasis on reading your opponent and making smart predictions rather than just quick reactions. If a dragon punch only took one button, it would be a lot easier to just hit that once I see my opponent is jumping. When it takes a few inputs to do, I am less likely to be rewarded by merely reacting rather than knowing my opponent is going to jump (or forcing them into a situation where they're likely to)
Charge-type motions (flash kicks, sonic booms, etc) largely rely on the current input setup as well

Also, if all attacks were just button inputs with no directional commands, you'd have a much smaller moveset

IMO most well-received old games "hold up" because most qualities that make a game good aren't time- or context- dependent

I guess there are a few games that were held up purely by graphical power, but I think a good aesthetic is something different that is more timeless. Like some people say Morrowind looks "bad" now and in one sense I can agree, but you can't deny that its visual design is unique and praiseworthy

I think Mr. Popo is the most notable combat-capable character to never be playable. Even King Kai has been playable before. Aside from that all that's really left are henchman-type characters, movie-only characters, and characters from when Goku was a child.

Crimson Echoes was not good.

Capcom -kind of- let this happen before with Mega Man X Street Fighter, which was enjoyable if not great. Since it was a non-commercial product it didn't get the polish it should have but I still think the boss fights are pretty good
