There are number systems where it becomes untrue, but

I tend to hear this a lot. Seems like no matter what ypu say, it's not true in some number systems. But nobody ever names these number systems.

So question, which sytems are you talking about?

In this case, one of the most straightforward examples is the surreal numbers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surreal_number

.999...=1 is true under the rules of algebra, but not actually true

It's true in any context that involves normal, everyday numbers. There are number systems where it becomes untrue, but those number systems are far more esoteric than the level of understanding needed to grasp the idea in the first place.

I'm allergic to most fish, but I can eat shellfish. My mom is allergic to most shellfish, but can eat fish. We both eat at Japanese restaurants regularly, without mishap. We're careful about what we order and we ask questions if we're ever unsure about ingredients.

In the broadest sense possible, it's a meme, but that's a pretty meaningless statement since essentially every human idea ever is a meme in that sense.

In the sense that you seem to intend, that hating on mayo is just something that some people do on the internet because they think it's fun/cool/whatever to do so, nope. I've personally disliked mayo since long before the internet took off as a breeding ground for memes.

mayo is literally needed for most sandwhiches

Hmm. BLT? Nope, no need for mayo. Italian sub? No need. Reuben? Nope. French dip? Nah. Ham and cheese? Uh uh. Turkey and avacado? Delicious without mayo.

I'm pretty sure you can name a sandwich, and I can enjoy it without it having mayo slathered on the bread.

(caveat that I do enjoy chicken salad etc. and yes, I know that usually has mayo in it--just don't add any extra mayo beyond the salad part)

To be fair, in the book it's meant to be painfully obvious. I expect it will be explicitly confirmed in the show within the first few episodes.

If I didn't screw up my stars and bars counting, 1021.

Nope, this is wrong too, I'm double counting a bunch of stuff.

No, actually I've convinced myself that I'm not double-counting. So 1021, and here's the reasoning:

Can't use S, Z, or T shapes. That leaves lines, which must always be in pairs covering a 2x4 grid, L's, which similarly must be paired in a 2x4 grid, or squares. Squares have to be paired with other squares but they can float freely among any 2x4 grids of L's or lines. So, we have 6 cases: 0 squares, 2 squares, 4, 6, 8, or 10 squares.

If 0 squares, there are 5 2x4 blocks filled with lines or L's. L's can come in two polarities, so that's three choices per 2x4 block, for 15 possibilities.

If 2 squares, there are 4*3=12 ways to pick the 2x4 grids. Multiply by the 6!/(2!4!) ways of arranging the 2 squares around the 4 2x4 grids, and that's 180 more possibilities.

If 4 squares, there are 3*3=9 ways to pick the 2x4 grids. Multiply by the 8!/(4!4!) ways of arranging 4 squares around the 3 2x4 grids for 630 possibilities.

If 6 squares, there are 2*3=6 ways to pick the 2x4 grids. Multiply by the 8!/(2!6!) ways of arranging 6 squares around 2 2x4 grids for 168 possibilities.

If 8 squares, there are 3 ways to pick the 2x4 grid. Multiply by the 9 ways of arranging 8 squares on either side of the 1 2x4 grid for 27 possibilities.

10 squares adds 1 more possibility, total of 1021.

edit: aaaaand this is wrong because you can combine lines and L's to make longer grids.

You guys are acting like it's a new discovery that technological innovation replaces certain types of jobs... Not sure why you think this is something different.

Because computers allow for arbitrary automation complexity.

This. The coming wave of automation isn't just going to replace certain types of jobs. It's going to replace the great majority of our current jobs and the great majority of jobs that might arise in their place.

Asherlee10 posted...
There will be other jobs that develop as we develop new technology. My guess is that repair, electrician, and programming jobs will continue to rise.

The development of other jobs for humans presupposes that there will be things that humans do more efficiently than bots. However, the thing that makes this wave of automation look different than past waves of automation is precisely that bots are rapidly overtaking most humans in virtually every field of endeavor.

It's worth noting that problems arise for our current societal model long before bots are better than all humans in all fields.

This is one of my favorite problems from a combinatorics book (though you don't need combinatorics to solve it).

That one's a classic, so I can't claim to have figured out the answer, but it's of course not possible with those squares removed. Reason has to do with the nature of a domino. I'll leave it at that in case someone is trying to work it out on their own.
