First off, most in the Japanese High Command underestimated the U.S.'s capacity and will to fight. This wasn't just a Japanese mistake: more of a general militarist/fascist belief in the "softness" of "liberal democracy".

Second of all, the U.S. sort of picked a fight, as after the Japanese moved to occupy European colonies in Southeast Asia following the fall of France and the Netherlands, we imposed a severe embargo on Japan, most especially on oil and scrap metal e.g. the very two things Japan needed most. Of course, it needed those things to wage its bloody wars in China and Southeast Asia, so the embargo was definitely the right thing to do.
In any case, there was recognition at high levels in the U.S. that this would likely provoke a Japanese attack, and preparations were made: to an extent. The U.S. army and navy had begun preparing defenses in certain places(including the Phillipines), but the Japanese not only attacked faster than anticipated, they hit everywhere at once, including Pearl Harbor, which was considered to be outside their range. The speed and breadth of their attack caught the U.S. completely off-guard and allowed them to score a string of big victories in the early-going. Basically, the Japanese were hoping that, if they could keep the momentum going, we would fold quickly.

Lastly, the purpose behind attacking Pearl Harbor was many-fold, but one of the prime targets were three aircraft carriers: the Enterprise, the Hornet, and the Yorktown. The Japanese navy had no shortage of carriers and grasped their immense strategic potential, but all of the carriers happened to be out on exercises at the time of the attack, so they were all left unscathed. However, the navy's losses at Pearl were quite serious nonetheless, and definitely bought the Japanese time. Just not nearly enough.

I mean I'd be all for a good third party candidate, but let's face it, not going to happen unless one of the two parties we have crashes and burns hard. Third party candidates are better off just listing themselves as Democrat or republican in America, even if they clearly aren't. That's why our system gets so skewed too, but it's always been that way and endured somehow.

Also, it's rare that:
1)Some one worth voting for will run 3rd-party and 2)Actually be on the ballot in your state.

I mean, last year, the most "legit" 3rd-party candidates were Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and an egg mcmuffin. Not exactly inspiring.

Bolshevism failed because it was anti-democratic and paranoid(to be fair, the Entente WAS out to get them). Power became increasingly concentrated at the top, making it (relatively) easy for some one like Stalin to seize literally all of the political power. That Russia has no history of successful representative institutions(and still doesn't) could not have helped matters.

It's Nixon's fault the press pries so much into presidents, really. They pretty much turned a blind eye towards stuff like philandering before then(and not just the Dems either, though you have to go back a ways, of course), but Nixon was hiding actual malfeasance while also openly hating on the media.

But yes, the Trumps are a stupid family, and Donald Jr. is probably the dumbest of the lot. He basically admitted he tried to collude with a Russian government agent. And, also, LOL at people who try to excuse it as some sort of Democratic plot. First, the Democrats are incompetent. Second, even if we allow that, somehow, someway, without any evidence, this meeting was masterminded by Democratic operatives to discredit Trump, consider the following points:
1)It wasn't exposed until JUST NOW i.e. long after it could have helped elect President (Hillary) Clinton
2) Donald Jr. took the bait. Donald Jr. as well as President Trump's then-campaign manager and his son-in-law all WANTED to collude with a hostile foreign government.

Donald Trump Jr's own statements about the meeting suggest a violation of the Logan Act.
Logan Act

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

That's fairly minor, of course, but again, a crime has been committed just by Donald Jr's own admission

This pattern of secret meetings between Trump officials and Russian officials is not suspicious in the slightest.

I don't understand how someone can follow the news (even badly) and say "there's no story here"

If there's nothing there, why does literally everyone in his admin who's been caught meeting with Russian personnel behind closed doors feel the need to
A) Be secretive about it in the first place?
and
B) Lie about it?

I was being facetious, personally. But, as plenty of actual people think that way, I can understand why you took it seriously.
I mean, on one hand, you have one of the most bumbling administrations in American history hiding meetings with Russian officials/proxies(poorly) and they can't even agree among themselves what these meetings were about. Hell, Donald Jr. has already supplied two different explanations for HIS meeting, and the story broke less than 12 hours ago!

On the other side, you have Vladimir Putin, a man whose political enemies end up "mysteriously" murdered and has been running Russia with an iron fist for almost two decades now.

Eh, Cao Cao did get pretty vicious attacking Tao Qian. To be fair, Tao Qian was dumb enough to put an ex-bandit and Yellow Turban(Zhang Kai) in charge of protecting Cao Cao's wealthy (adoptive) father Cao Song and he ended up getting robbed and murdered, but that wasn't the peasantry's fault.
Then again, it's not like any of the warlords cared about the peasantry, so yeah. Being a peasant was in an era like the later Later Han and Three Kingdoms era sucked.

Also, Chen Gong was my favorite addition to X7, personally. He's like, that guy who runs that super-shady dealership in the bad part of town. I really want Yuan Shu, because that guy was pretty damned deluded. He'd basically spend a lot of time complaining about how useless everyone else is and how much he hates(is jealous of) Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. Are they adding extra stuff post-game in Ultra?

This is exactly my issue with it as well. Sun was amazing besides the lackluster post-game, so I'm really hoping that's one of the main things they fix in Ultra. They haven't said anything yet regarding it though.

This. They need to give every game a Platinum or ORAS-style post-game. To do otherwise is getting increasingly inexcusable.

And I probably won't, unless they add *a lot* of new content.

Most women aren't really warm/friendly unless you're a good looking guy/another female. Not really their fault though, they get harassed/hit on constantly and are likely pretty jaded.

Imagine if every single time someone talked to you/was nice to you it turned out they were just trying to sell you something. Eventually you're done with it and just throw up a "no solicitors" sign.

Yeah. It's important to not take it personally: not all of us make a nuisance of ourselves, but every woman has had a bad experience with a guy. Probably multiple bad experiences. If she has earbuds in or is texting/talking on her phone, she doesn't want to be disturbed. If you say hi to her and she doesn't react much or at all, don't press the issue. Just leave the interaction at that.

ElatedVenusaur
07/02/17 7:58:29 PM

Unless Pence himself is impeached and convicted, yes.
Also, "Impeachment" generally refers to the House voting to impeach a president. Once the president is impeached, the Senate convenes a trial and then holds a vote. 2/3 of Senators(so 66, in today's Congress) must vote to convict in order to be removed from office. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached but acquitted by the Senate(the former by a single vote!)
IIRC, Nixon was never formerly impeached, but only because he resigned due to his impeachment and subsequent conviction being a fait accompli. His VP(Spiro Agnew) had been impeached and replaced with Gerald Ford, a prominent House Republican. So Ford became president without actually ever standing in a presidential election(he subsequently lost to Jimmy Carter in '76, in part due to his highly unpopular decision to pardon Nixon. But that's a whole 'nother can of worms.)
