I just saw the current rumoured standings, and it's actually not a bad line-up. Even if they're true though, a lot could change still, especially if Mnet does that thing they did last time where they said who's 12th in the middle of the live broadcast.

Ha yeah, my argument for Jaehwan was exactly my argument for Yeonjung last season, and I was very glad voters pulled through.

Jihoon is rather overrated, but I respect the hustle of making yourself a signature gesture and catchphrase, and that time he saved confetti in his pocket to make his close-up more dynamic.

He didn't say if it got physical, but Insoo did say on his vlive after he was eliminated that the trainees were fighting all the time, but everyone just swallowed it because there were cameras all over. Then Mnet called him to shut him down.

Saving 1 pick for the top 11 was smart, because all of our data remains unreliable which makes for a more unpredictable finale. Last season we were able to see the broad shape of things ahead of time. People had to choose between their fave and saving a lower pick, while under 2 picks they can effectively do both. So yeah, it's hard to say what to make of Sungwoon's rank at present. Samuel and Jisung's recovery also feel like it's just second pick support. Still, people are re-evaluating their choices now that we're down to it, so anything is possible.

My rationale for having three Nu'est members in my predictions is that I felt like they all built their characters on the show separate from the Nu'est brand and rose independent of each other. Jelpi was very much a package, and while Kim Nayoung had fans, her and to a lesser extent Mina, had their popularity tied to Sejeong. Maybe for Nu'est it's just less obvious who will SFF the other two. Maybe instead they just all leech off each other enough to affect all their chances, but with higher vote totals, I thought it's possible that they all have big enough independent fanbases to survive. I'm still not ready to rule that out. Also, probably wishful thinking on my part, but I kind of like Dongho's chances the best? I feel like Jonghyun and Minhyun are more likely to leech off each other than from Dongho.

I definitely thought about Pinky when Guanlin's rank dropped, but man what does his fans have to be complacent about? Pinky was stable near the top from the beginning without getting a great deal of screen time, and a lot of people likely assumed her Chinese fans would be reliable. Guanlin kicked around at 9th or so, then blew up to 2nd place, in a season where we've already seen what happens to everyone in 2nd place. I agree he'll bounce back, though. Seeing him in 20th place will be a wake up call.

I agree with Jaehwan, too. Voters are likely more position-minded and looking at what the group needs, and no one's gotten more main vocal hype than Jaehwan.

I'm fine with anyone making it, except Haknyeon because EUNKI WAS RIGHT YOU FUCKERS HOW COULD YOU. Haknyeon's drop was pretty surprising too. He looked like teflon when the last round of evil editing didn't drop him at all. Actually, seeing as him, Seonho, and Guanlin fell off, are people quietly dropping the untalented visuals? Haknyeon I get, but the Cube trainees pick things up quite well, and rose to the occasion every time. They better make it.

the IKYK performance was really all over the place. Individually I liked the song, the dance and the look, but none of those components seemed to gel with the others. Open Up had a huge advantage in this regard since it was a really clear "concept", something that was was generally missing this year.

yeah, i think the stage and the outfits put open up over the top for the live audience. songs by themselves, i prefer IKYK (and fine, having my faves help).

i really want jisung for the final group now. i thought his age would definitely disqualify him but i'm seeing hope.

33. Kim Yehyun

first of all, YESSSS. hidden teacher, literal angel, music prodigy kim yehyun made it. sadly, this is probably as far as he goes. there's so little hype, he doesn't even have a subway ad.

i love his selflessness, and genuine excitement when other people do well. 'if it's you' was the best position evaluation stage, and i like everyone on that team but yehyun arranging the song, and helping give yongguk the confidence to reveal his potential was a big part of it. position evaluation is probably going to be his best showing because he can show off his technical music knowledge, and that's not going to come up for the concept evaluation even if all his potential screen time wasn't already going to be swallowed up by hyunbin's redemption arc.

his voting trend is funny. he shot up from 93 to 34 when screencaps were passed around of him helping everyone in F class learn the dance to the point of injury, but got no screen time for it. then he dropped to 55 after the first eliminations, as if people were satisfied with him being rewarded for his efforts but not that invested. then the reason they voted for him made it on screen, and he went up to 33. under 2 pick, he doesn't have the fanbase.



and man, why did i start doing this so late/at all. more later, after the next episode throws all my predictions out the window. also, i'm doing this as a go along, so if i end up putting more than 11 people in the top 11, i'll deal with it later.

i was going to talk about everyone but didn't get to it before ep. 10. here's what little i had, and it already proved to be very wrong.

alright let's do this - thoughts and predictions on the top 35

first:
- i'm following the show casually, and don't claim any special insight
- everyone's a scandal away from having their chances shot anyway

results are more volatile this season, mostly due to greater votals. i don't have a total handy, but kim jonghyun is 1st place with 2,795,491 votes compared to 1,473,685 for sejeong at this point last season, the top 20 all have more than 1 million votes compared to the top 4 last time, 58th place this time has the amount of votes as 31st place last time, etc. last time it was predictable that the jellyfish trainees split a fanbase and who would drop at 1 pick, but there are enough votes this time for everyone near the top to have strong individual fanbases. right now there around 7 trainees that look pretty stable and most people would predict to make the group, but a lot can change now that we're heading into 2 picks.

2 picks is not going to be as dramatic a shift as 1 pick, but it'd be interesting to see who benefits from it the most. some people are putting a lot of weight on those with a ship/pairing, but i'm not sure there's enough of a consensus on those outside of the most obvious (OngNiel, WinkDeep, maybe Byeongari), but those are obvious because they already share a fanbase anyway. of course, assuming we go down to 1 vote for the top 22, this is just going to make the end result more unpredictable.

35. Kim Donghan

it occurs to me that being last place is a pretty good spot to be for a low ranked trainee, because for that episode, your ranking is a bigger deal than 1st place. 35th is what the episode ends on, and the image of donghan giving his speech while his lip quivers is going to stay with voters. he's also a top 2 visual with his new hair imo, and since this is mostly a visual game i expect him to rise a lot. ofc, given some of the visuals at the top i'm not completely in line with the voting demographic, but i've seen praise for his visuals so there's hope. his rank didn't change much between his performance on ep. 6 and ep. 8, but that's fine since he didn't get any screen time, and not everyone's going to watch all the individual cams. actually that's another factor - screen time distribution has been so atrocious that we barely know anything about donghan so a lot of people might only start noticing him now.

BOLD prediction, he's going to lee suhyun this shit. he'll be 22nd place next time, but then go one further and make the top 11. the slight wrinkle is that someone from his company said that his group's debut was in the works, so some think he's going to end up like eunbin when she was put into CLC, but idk i think this is different. i think everyone assumes that companies are always planning debuts, so hearing it doesn't mean much without anything more concrete like with eunbin.

34. Kwon Hyunbin

he had a very negative edit early on, which actually didn't affect him as much as i thought it did. still, he's been dropping gradually the whole time, so it's still suprising he managed to cling on. even being the villified member of the justice league counts for something, and it helps that the rest of that team still seems to like him, and jokes about his lack of skills/laziness all the time. he still gets a lot of screen time, and has been gradually redeeming himself by working hard and improving steadily. it's a tough one, because he's been a major character this whole time and he's on a strong redemption arc that will almost definetly be the focus during his team's segment, but i think there's also a fair amount of people who have written him off even if they don't hate him anymore. he might survive under the 2 pick system, especially from those invested in keeping the justice league alive. fuck it, i'll say he makes top 22.

produce 101 is good as hell, and also terrible. 101 trainees from different agencies of different levels of prestige, from different walks of life. mid-twenties last chancers next to 15-year-old wunderkind mini-celebrities. first episode is just seat selection and it's like a fucking tournament arc in a shounen anime. then they start getting judged, and rated, and ranked, and you feel shitty because they're just kids and kpop is cruel. then you're uplifted because there's much bonding around a common dream. then you feel bad again because everyone's in a high stress situation on no sleep, and the editing is shamelessly manipulative even by reality show standards. dongho straightens a piece of paper and disagrees with something, so ofc the sound of the paper is 5 times louder than any paper has ever been and there's a crash zoom on everyone's faces twice over intense BGM, and fuck dongho must be mad as hell and flipping out.

I don't know what I'm missing with Master of None. I saw 2 episodes and found it cutesy, stilted, and terribly acted all around. I get that his parents aren't professional actors, but Kelvin Yu presumably is, right?

I should give Lady Dynamite another shot. First two episodes were alright despite a lot of the 4th wall breaking not working for me, but the race episode was exhausting and I haven't gone back since.

I will probably watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, even though I thought the second season was a bit of a dud.
