Corrik you are literally advocating for death panels.

Also fentanyl is far more profitable than something like an Epi pen. Stopping the supply of that will drive other drug prices up, not down. A drug companies more profitable drugs often subsidize the less profitable (but medically important) drugs.

We obviously need to do something about the opioid epidemic, but you seem to have a misunderstanding about what controls drug prices.

Also I need to look more into fentanyl specifically to see if I agree with it being classified as a schedule I drug. I'm sure they've done studies on the effectiveness of fentanyl in pain management for either terminal patients or patients with severe chronic pain, and I would like to see how it stacks up in comparison to other similar drugs prescribed to these kind of patients.

"No currently accepted medical use in treatment" is a very specific statement and I have not done the research to know if I fully agree with that statement.

Thanks for the explanation.

I suspect there are a lot of root causes of the epidemic, and I'm in favor of curbing use of opiods in hospital settings as well as going after drug companies that oversell their shit. I don't pretend to have all the solutions, but doing nothing is only going to make things worse. I also support treating the users with some sympathy and providing law enforcement with that antidote thing I've heard about but can't remember the name of.

This is the one area where "big pharma" has been pretty unforgivable recently. There's definitely malfeasance going on there, but it's also important to remember that many doctors are total scumbags/idiots and need to be held accountable too.

Oh I agree. Doctors, for all their reverence, are incredibly corrupt when it comes to suggesting medicines to their patients. It makes sense because there's no way for a human to be aware of every single remedy and weigh the pros and cons. But this kind of epidemic doesn't just happen.

I'd argue that epidemic is a result more of societal issues than availability. That same feeling of hopelessness that Trump was able to feed into when dismantling the Republican field is the exact same thing fueling the epidemic. This epidemic is especially bad in rural white America, and has gotten so bad the life expectancy of white Americans has actually been dropping in recent years.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/20/health/life-expectancy-decline-mortality.html

Dr. Arias, who is preparing a larger study of mortality trends over the past 15 years, said drug overdoses, liver disease and suicide were the main drivers of the gloomy trends among whites in recent years, a pattern also found by other researchers.

Obviously there are things we can and should do to help curb the opioid epidemic, but if Trump doesn't also address the underlying issue the bigger problem here isn't going to change. Opioids are abused because of ease of access, and if you cut them off then the population susceptible to their abuse is going to switch to other means to dull their pain. "Deaths of desperation" isn't going to go down as a whole I would guess - you would see fewer drug overdoses but an increase in suicide and liver disease. The opioid epidemic is a symptom of the problem, and not the problem itself.

Also, pain is notoriously difficult to manage and diagnose. Big Pharma is obviously pushing this too hard, but it isn't as if the doctors and big Pharma are addressing an imaginary problem. It isn't always obvious if a patient has drug seeking behavior, and while doctors have signs they are supposed to look for, most people who do this sort of thing ALSO know what doctors are looking for and can lie around it. There isn't an easy test you can hook someone up to and go "oh you have nine pain units - that's bad". There are plenty of problems with the relationship between doctors and drug manufacturers, but it isn't as if a big portion of a doctor's income is coming from those sweet sweet fentanyl profits. I believe "scumbag doctors" aren't the main driving force here, and a bigger problem in the industry are doctors suggesting too many tests (MRI, X-ray, etc) that aren't needed instead of giving away too many drugs.

Same.

Arya could literally beat The Mountain in a fight. Think of the insanity of this.

Well Brienne isn't necessarily stronger than the Hound! She fought the Hound as he was almost dying from some infection and still didn't dominate him.

Also it is unclear if the Hound was straight up stronger than the Mountain.

I mean it is possible because the Mountain got straight up demolished by Oberyn so he wasn't necessarily the best fighter in Westeros.

Agreed.

But the tea party was at least smart and ran in areas they could win. Pushing for a far left candidate in WV to replace a sitting senator, who just saved the key democratic legislative achievement in the past decade or so, is insane. The comments on the AMA are bizarre, and I just can't believe people would be naive enough to not understand she would get demolished in the primary.

If you want to replace "blue dog" or corporate democrats, target states where any democratic candidate is likely to be an overwhelming favorite. I swear, we are so dumb when it comes to demographics sometimes.

literally loses to cersei (jaime really), politically, by losing the fairly loyal randyll, despite having dragons with dany. so she's evidently lost a few steps in that game, too. in fairness, that part could be written off as her general decline since the deaths of her progeny.

First part is definitely possible, but they never talk about that in the show so I'm not giving them credit for that. He is certainly more mysterious in the book/seems to have magic powers or is at least great at BSing it/has an actual weapon that can counter dragons but none of that is covered in the show. He's basically a nonstop wrestling entrance (I'm not complaining - I actually think he's a lot of fun but that it just doesn't fully explain how Yara was caught so off guard).

Secondly, she was fairly consumed with revenge so she sort of lost her major strength politically. It was a mistake allying with foreign invaders and being in open rebellion, but she was desperate for any chance at revenge she could get. Tarly's defection makes sense given his distrust of foreigners. He's extremely vocal about how much he hates wildlings in season six, and I would assume that would extend to dothraki as well. That pitch was well suited to him, specifically.

He was their best military power. They make that point clear in the show and the books, multiple times. He was their strength, and it wouldn't surprise me if other houses joined him considering that Olenna had aligned herself with a foreign invader and Randyll Tarly was who they respected anyway.

I don't disagree they jobbed a bit...but this isn't on the level of Yara or Stannis imho.

I read all the books and the Tyrells were never major players. Olenna was shewd and just as great as she was in the show, but she had no military prowess. Their best bannerman and the strength of their military power (in both the book and the show - Mace was a buffoon in both) switched sides and their commander was an elderly woman with no battle experience. She's powerful politically. They've never shown her to have military savvy.

Margaery was the only other major power player in the family. She isn't as calculating in the books, and she's dead in the show already (and again, her strength was political).

I'm super surprised that Jon walking into the throne room wasn't the final scene of the episode. Thought for sure we would cut to black on Dany on the throne.

Amazing episode. Dany getting owned is actually pretty amazing, especially with the red herring that Tyrion's time in the sewers was gonna pay off the way it would in any other series. I'm also glad that the Lannister army wasn't decimated as I'm still hoping for them to be numbers against the Walkers with Jamie at the head.

Lady Olenna went out like a fucking baller. I'll miss her.

I knew Olenna was going to die because they needed Dany to lose all her allies to make this interesting/them the scrappy underdogs (and damn did they succeed on that front), but it still broke my heart. Top ten favorite character easy. Maybe top five. Her death scene was top tier.

ALSO I loved the misdirect of them having Tyrion do his sewer monologue only for them to be vastly outplayed.

Dany is out of allies. Next episode should be FUN. This one might be one of my favorites though outside the "BIG" ones everyone loves.

Yep!

I feel like part of the reason Democrats are so bad at elections is because there is a loud branch of the party that doesn't understand a democrat in Kansas shouldn't be the same as a democrat in California. Or, if they are, he or she is going to get demolished.

Manchin has been YUUUUUUUUGE for the Dems. One of their best electoral victories (outside of the presidency, obviously) in quite some time.

Reads so well after tonight.

Here's another fun fact about that whole crazy thing. She tried to run as a libertarian that year to get on a major party ticket to help her chances but they wouldn't let her. Libertarian party refused her bid.

Six years later, she won reelection again (as a republican and not an independent write in). The dude she beat in the last election also ran against her, this time as a libertarian because they allowed that guy to switch parties. She crushed him a second time.

We're really lucky to have Murkowski, honestly. We could've been stuck with the furthest right senator in her seat instead.

Did Pence seriously write that? Holy shit.

This is one of those things I simply cannot believe is true. It is too dumb to be true.

I need to go verify this brb.

not only have I not received a cancel email, but I actually received an email saying they moved my order UP to September 29th as opposed to the initially promised October 6th

what is this? GOOD LUCK?!

Yeah, me too. And the order still shows as active on my actual Walmart account.

Considering this is a mass cancellation though it is likely just another glitch in their well powered online ordering system.

CURSE YOU WALMART

One of the top posts currently from /r/the_donald:

https://www.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments/6pod4i/thank_you_mad_dog/

Supporters getting all their cutting edge memes from your grandmothers emails.

Also, I didn't think it was possible, but I somehow underestimated how much Trump supporters hate transgender people (well, Trump supporters on reddit, perhaps I shouldn't overgeneralize here). Like...I knew they HATED transgender people. But this is grotesque.

This is from earlier this month:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/1/james-mattis-delays-transgender-military-services-/

Seems likely this decision did come, at least in part, from the recommendation of either Mattis himself or various military branches.

EDIT: in replay to Esuriat. Curse me for thinking I was fast and could post without quoting :(

Er, if it was at the recommendation of Mattis, this probably would've happened at the beginning of the month, when he implemented the delay.

Well the article does say:
“The services will review their accession plans and provide input on the impact to the readiness and lethality of our forces.”

So he implemented the delay in part to review the policy. Now, we do not have any direct quotes from Mattis or other military heads yet about the decision today that I've been able to find, but there is some evidence that Trump might've had some input from Mattis or other military members on this.

I mean, if Mattis was fully opposed to Trump's decision from the beginning I don't see the point in implementing the delay in the first place. I could be wrong though. Again, I didn't see any reaction to it in any way today.

He could've been actually telling the truth, yknow. Mattis isn't a complete shit. It's an archaic point of view, but wanting to know what it'd affect is valid.

Oh no, I totally agree. Mattis is far and away the most competent member of this administration (although that is a low bar).

I'm just saying that Mattis may have had a hand in this as well.

you don't make it about identity, you make it about merit.

And obviously that's the issue with what Trump just did. People aren't asking for special qualifications for trans people. If you are unfit, you are unfit. If they believe you a liability on the front line based on an actual assessment, then sure. But Trump (and the guy you just linked to) are of the mind "all trans people are a liability/weak mentally/unfit to serve" which is a bs generalization.

If you make the standard stringent and like half of all trans people serving in the military are cut, there would not be nearly as big of an outcry as going "no all of you are unfit and we aren't even going to bother assessing you individually because we just know".

Also the guy is conflating stress on the front line with serving in any sort of capacity at all.

Also he closes his argument with "I got to get to work because Obama didn't pay me like he did IRAN THANKS OBUMMER" so it is pretty clear where his political persuasions lie (not that should dismiss him out of hand).

https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/politics/wp/2017/07/25/senators-on-hot-mic-trump-is-crazy-im-worried/

“Did you see the one who challenged me to a duel?” Collins asks.

“I know,” Reed replies. “Trust me. Do you know why he challenged you to a duel? ‘Cause you could beat the s— out of him.”

“Well, he’s huge,” Collins replies. “And he — I don’t mean to be unkind, but he’s so unattractive it’s unbelievable.”

This is extraordinary. "He's so unattractive it's unbelievable," is also getting worked into my daily language.
