I actually find myself having less nostalgia for these early SNES years because I usually only got 1, maybe 2 games a year back then for Christmas or my birthday. Like, Zelda and Mario Land 2 were the only '92 games there I ever actually owned back then.

Alright, here's The Zelda Post.

I think that the further away I get from BotW, the less I'll end up liking it. That game is at its best when you're just wandering around doing whatever. The world feels good to explore and while sometimes it does feel a little too barren, climbing up to the summit of a big mountain to survey the area and find shrines and other points of interest is great. Link could stand to be a little more mobile, given how much ground you need to cover to get places.

The shrines (in conjunction with the exploration) are the best part of the game. I love the idea of little bite-sized dungeons to supplement the larger ones. Some of the shrines end up being a tad too long, but for the most part they're pretty unique (in terms of content, not aesthetic). I do sometimes wish there was a better way to find them, because once you've done 2/3s of them it becomes tougher to uncover new ones, which makes your wandering feel a bit aimless at times.

The dungeons proper are disappointing. The concept of changing the structure of the dungeons to solve puzzles is neat the first time, but all four end up feeling very same-y. There's nothing really distinguishing one from another other than the layout, and none of them end up feeling very memorable as a result. The lead ups to the dungeon are more interesting and memorable than the dungeons themselves, and that's a big disappointment for me.

The weapon degradation I could take or leave, but I do think it could use some tweaks. I think equipment could stand to last a bit longer than it does, and the fact that nearly everything you get is throwaway makes the rewards for finding chests kind of pointless. Solving a tough puzzle in a shrine only to be rewarded with a sword that's going to break after your next encounter feels bad. The inventory system could use an overhaul too. Even after expanding my inventory a decent bit I never felt like it was enough because I always wanted to have a bunch of particular weapons for any situations - torch, korok leaf, hammer, elemental weapons - this eats up space fast. A better way to manage that would also be nice, although I didn't find the menus quite as clumsy as others.

I also think the economy is kind of messed up in the game. I pretty much never had enough rupees for anything I wanted, and shit's expensive in Hyrule. You never come across rupees in the wild, the only real way to make currency is find chests in shrines that happened to contain money, sell stuff, or save scum the gambling minigame. I was loathe to sell items because I never knew if I was going to want it for cooking or upgrading gear later on, so I always found myself strapped for cash when I got to a new area and wanted to buy something. And god forbid I ever wanted to unlock the 4th great fairy fountain.

I think I may have enjoyed the game more if I had more time to just sit with it. If I could have taken a month to just dick around and do whatever, I might have gotten into the nuances more. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but I never had any of these cool emergent experiences that people post about on social media. I never solved a puzzle some weird way that wasn't intended by the game. Maybe that's my fault and I lack creativity or something, I don't know. I still like the idea of an open world Zelda game, and I think I'd be down to have Nintendo use this format again if the address most of the issues I had with this one.

I have my doubts if BotW will have the replay value or the nostalgia power of other Zeldas, but yes, during a first playthrough, this game is GOAT tier. I honestly wish I would have taken a few months off between jobs so I could be enjoying this all day in sweatpants versus a couple hours a day at night.

Yeah, this is something I've been thinking about as well. I loved exploring the world the first time, but I have a hard time seeing myself go through and doing all those shrines and finding all those Korok seeds a second time and having a great time doing it.
