Yeah, it's actually pretty important. The plot is pretty much directly tied to the plot of Iron Fist. I'd say it's even more important to see than S2 of Daredevil (though that's important too). You'll be better off if you suffer through it like I did.

Maybe you can find a plot summary on youtube, there are quite a few people with your mindset that want to want Defenders but don't want to watch that awful show first.

I don't think it's very good at it. I think that tea is particularly bad at overpowering the alcohol taste, and something like orange juice does a much better job
