How did the UK election happen exactly? I heard the Tories just...decided to have one because they felt like it? Is that sort of thing actually real?

They wanted to increase their majority. It backfired horribly.

I got the intent, just not the 'how'. Being able to call for an election whenever you want seems absurd and easily abusable.

You need a 2/3rds majority in the house of commons or a vote of no confidence to call a general election. Otherwise they are every five years.

Of course, until 2011 the Prime Minister could just call an election whenever.

She's one of May's biggest supporters and Home Secretary. May's old position. She is similar to May in policy I believe. Hates encryption and police spending. She was tipped to be a future candidate for Conservative leader after May. She got sent into the debate in May's place and got summarily ganged up on by the other 6 parties. Only two days after her father died no less. She took one for the team essentially.

Things got interesting when her safe Tory seat of Hastings looked like it might go Labour. She held it by only 350 votes. It being so close seems to have dashed her leadership hopes.

Anyway, the final result was announced and Labour got one last big win from the Tories - Kensington, one of the richest parts of the UK and a seat that has always been Tory until now.

I feel their comments towards things like regulating the internet is what ultimately cost them a majority. There are things you don't discuss doing during an election campaign, regulating the internet has "brought down governments" or at the very least caused a u-turn in policy.

Honestly after Cameron stepped down there weren't many options to lead the party since many of them secretly opposed Brexit so a more right winged politician was selected. The thing about Brexit was that it wasn't voted entirely by right winged people, many centrists or left winged people felt it was the best option for the UK.

Nah that's not it. The internet stuff was bad for them but fairly minor, the focus was more on schools, the dementia tax, the NHS, human rights, fox hunting, and May's own awful performance. Of course it all added up to an awful manifesto and worse campaign.

Also most Tory MPs were openly remain, including Theresa May, who got the job because all the other big dogs fell in the post-brexit bloodbath. Theresa May herself is a centrist, although she threw in some more right leaning policies to try and grab the UKIP vote, which she failed to do.

And now with a minority government none of her awful stuff will pass, even with the DUP. She will struggle to pass a budget if she makes it that far. Our last minirity government only lasted 9 months. We'll see how this one goes.

So just to sum up the current Tory situation, after criticising a potential "coalition of chaos" and calling their opponents terrorist sympathisers, they have now been forced into a coalition of chaos (actually a minority government with an informal alliance) with a party that has known links to terrorism. This is not even getting into how anti-LGBT the DUP are, while many Tories including their Scottish leader are LGBT themselves.

They also destroyed their leader's reputation and made Corbyn the most popular he's ever been. What a show.

Nintendo, as they have the most question marks and potential for exciting new announcements. Sony shouldn't and likely won't have too many big unknown games given their current slate, and Microsoft are focusing on Scorpio. Third parties seem more and more perfunctory every year at this thing.

I believe you are not trolling, just that you have a poor understanding of history and what what the power of fear does when you allow it to run rampant.

Under any statistical measure terror attacks throughout the world are a very small cause of death, but they take up a drastically large amount of our time worrying and posturing about them. I lost someone to a shooting, I can tell you very much that it sucks and it leaves a crater in your life and the people you know as well. It is horrific. What we should not do is forget the numerous lessons of history and the very, very large percentage of insert whatever group you wish to put that do not do this.

100 people die, so 100,000 do not deserve a chance at happiness? The benefit of the doubt? And which group are we talking about? Christians? Muslims? People of any color at one point or another? irish? Give me any type of folk and I'm sure someone has murdered a bunch of people at some point.

Fighting fear with fear does not work. It has never worked. The fact is often times the acts justified in the name of fighting terrorism, home or abroad, end in results which are worse than the original act and only cause further acts to become more likely.

Any Christian who mocks Islam as 'the religion of peace' does not know their own history.

I know history plenty, thanks. Christianity reformed itself for a reason; Islam actually went through a reform in the opposite direction. It was a religion of peace to start out, but as you get farther into reading the Quran it gets more and more violent. Those lines about how killing one innocent means killing the world are all near the beginning. Islam is now fully into "death to the infidels" mode, where you're either in the house of Islam or the house of war.

IRA. What about them? Or the Ulster Defence League or any of the idiots in that mess.

The problem is you show a clear lack of understanding of where terrorism comes from and the effects of deportation. The vast majority of terrorist incidents are by citizens of the country the attack takes place in. So why should we deport them? Because they're not white? You realise how that sounds, right? What about the 33-50% of people on terror watch lists who are white nationalists? What about Thomas Mair, should we have deported him? Where to? And of course you can be on a terror watch list due to contact with people and be totally innocent. And of course deporting people not only harms communities and risks breeding anger and resentment, it also makes those who are deported a threat elsewhere.

Interestingly it's worth knowing that Snyder did supervise this one creatively, and was hands-off for Suicide Squad. David Ayer has a good record as well.

I think the reason this one succeeds is that they got it together on the production end. BvS and SS were messes in that sense. This is the first one produced since WB actually got people in to guide these films (as Kevin Feige does for Marvel) and it shows. Also the first one Geoff Johns is involved with. No Goyer also helps - this makes me more confident in Justice League as Chris Terrio alone is writing.

Wishing all the best to Zack Snyder by the way, what he went through was awful.

Neuter (or outright ban) encryption.

I don't know if this would severely affect our tech industry as it only applies to messengers AFAIK, but it is still awful. You can add to that the state internet regulation (China rules, effectively). However I would put more focus on Brexit and how leaving the single market will devastate the small tech sector, along with us losing our science and tech funding from the EU. BoJo will be easier on the encryption and regulation stuff but will still presumably take us out of the single market.

So in UK news, Corbyn is closing the gap a bit and the Tories might - might - not have an overall majority. Would be cool.

I hope so. It's actually interesting as there's been a lot of variability in the polls, with the polls using 2015 turnout data still suggesting a 10% victory for the Tories (although this is a damn sight better than the 24% from a month ago). Ultimately it is the young who will decide this election. They need to turn out and vote, only 43% did in 2015. It seems they will, and even a 60% turnout would be a big blow to the Tories. So let's hope they do.

For those on the other side of the pond and interested but not following, the reason for the dramatic tightening in polls is a combination of a great Labour campaign and manifesto and a Tory campaign so bad even their supporters are calling it one of the worst ever. It is loaded with unpopular policies like Fox hunting, the dementia tax, scrapping free school meals, and Theresa May is hiding from the public.

This all culminated in tonight's debate, in which Theresa May refused to appear, instead sending Home Secretary Amber Rudd (only days after her father died, no less). The result was the Tories getting the tar beaten out of them by the other parties. Then during closing statements, this happened:

Savage.

I seem to recall a time where it was like "I'm Theresa May, and I can tell you we're going to fuck up the internet, we're so ahead it doesn't even matter."

Is it now like "Er, maybe I shouldn't have done that...?"

Yeah basically. She's still the favourite to win but has pissed away a 24 point lead, and the whole purpose of this election was for her to remove the opposition (troubling in its own right). If she doesn't win a landslide, that's a defeat, and if she loses seats she's out of there. Of course, then we probably get Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

...Why!?

I mean, I understand defending your farm/property from predators that could harm you and yours.

But making a sport out of hunting animals* is a level of barbarism that I was happy to see going underground, with the hope that it would eventually be wiped out together.

*Deer hunting is not an exception, even though I actually support it. Hunting for sport is barbaric. Hunting for meat is not and is a useful way to keep the herds in check so that they don't starve to death. Fox hunting has never been anything but a sport.

It's something done by people who are very rich and upper class or upper-middle class, AKA the top Tories. 90% of the country disapprove, but of course the Tories want to exclusively benefit the richest.

Living in Ireland, from the UK originally. It is incredibly easy to get around the UK without a car, and in fact is probably easier than getting a car. You can get to any part of the U.K. from London by train in just a few hours. The national parks might be a little bit harder without a car but they still have buses. You can easily take your time and see all the major cities in not too long.

As for Ireland public transport is not as good outside of Dublin, but you can still get where you want to go by train and get around the cities by bus. The times are less flexible than U.K. times but it's not too bad at all.

It will probably take you less time to get where you're going by train as well.
